  1. Why do you need a knuckle? Is it cracked or warped? Your talking about a 20 year old part that takes a beating every time the car is driven. A used knuckle should cost $70 shipped off ebay. Expect to rebuild the entire knuckle. Bearing/seals/ball joint/hub. The additional new parts will cost another $70. Rebuild of the knuckle is one hour shop time.

  2. More Re: ECU story. It is ironic that the CEL remained off for last weeks smog test. My electronics guru friend suspects that when old EGR solenoid when bonkers with high and low ohm readings it also created voltage spikes that messed up the ECU. With no Hitachi schematic available, opening ECU case showed EGR solenoid return wire going directly to that UPA1478H which is what pulls down to ground the 12v reference input that first is fed into the EGR solenoid. It was only allowing 7 volts at solenoid connection. And, I am in California. I failed smog last week with CO% at 0.90 (max allowed is 0.66 ). I addressed what my mechanic diagnosed, and I put new CARB approved cats welded on for $440.00 parts and labor. Cat was clogged due to a coolant leak into cylinders and overheating. Problem was that double horseshoe coolant gasket under the throttle body. At one point driving up a grade at highway speed gave symptoms of fuel pressure problem, but was clogged cat. I have to say the exhaust smell a lot better now. When I pass smog next week I will investigate rebuilding an extra EA82 (SPFI non-turbo) . Car is at 310k miles. I will not see it go to the crusher till at least 400k (or 500k?) .

  3. That shaft that is half a hole out is fitted 180* out. pull it off, rotate 180* and refit, the hole will line up perfectly for the proper sized pin I'm still sticking with the strut being the issue with this clunking sound you described earlier. Classic symptom. Cheers Bennie

  4. I remember many years ago, riding around with a good spare EA82 in the back of my wagon. One time when I went to the mall, I remembered while inside that I had forgotten to lock the hatch. I ran back out to my car as fast as I could, but it was too late... Someone had already piled two more in on top of it.

  5. REPLACE ALL OF THAT RUBBER HOSE with metal before you burn the hell out of yourself when a hose bursts.I highly doubt any self respecting tech inspection will let that RUBBER HOSE pass tech when its ran in the interior with NO SHIELDS of any kind. Dont forget to install heat shielding insulation around all of the metal coolant lines as well as a outer shield around that.
