  1. My 2001 with the same engine and trans downshifts normally. The white 2002 feels like it's going to rip the trans or rear diff out of the car, revs to almost 6000 and then grabs and pulls it down to 4000 at full load. The battery has been disconnected numerous times, it always does it. Sounds like slammo might have a line on a cheap EZ30 and 4EAT for me though.

  2. NGK on the plugs/wires? Not sure if the '04 were as picky as the earlier models...but why tempt the fates. 2000-2004 Outback had NO MAF, so you're not blind. :-) It's an EJ251 vs EJ253 thing (kinda) Only the turbocharged models had a MAF in '04 - STI, WRX, FXT, Baja turbo...IIRC.

  3. That's just a pressure switch that tells the ECU to idle up if you are dry steering at idle. It has nothing to do with the PS system. GD

  4. They will not work. Completely different cylinder heads. The WRX heads use a much larger OD for the cam seals. Look at them on the parts diagram and you will understand maybe. In any case the 25D doesn't need belt cover guides. You should check to ensure the cams turn freely. A damaged/contaminated cam journal could lead to such problems and may end one day in a broken cam. The Gates stuff is junk. But you don't need to buy the parts from Subaru. Subaru doesn't actually make any of that stuff. Mitsuboshi, NTN, NSK, Koyo, Aisin, NPW. Stick to those brands. And honestly I would buy all new cam sprockets from Subaru. We are starting to see older plastic cam sprockets from the 90's just disintegrate without warning. This results in severe valve train damage. GD

  6. http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Legacy_Outback/1996/Service Manual/ENGINE SECTION/ENGINE/ second pdf from the bottom (ends in 5971) is a diagnostic table listing the most common to least common causes of various issues. Perhaps you should take a look at that. The symptoms you are describing could have multiple sources, including bad vacuum lines, a cracked (or poorly connected) air intake tube, etc
