  1. Yes - The HGs that were done 12 years were on the original EA82 in this car, and it is the same engine that I removed from this car last week. Oil needed sealing up. It had intermittent rough idle from sticky valves. Clutch needed changing. 326k miles. A few months ago I found this rebuilt EA82 long block on Craiglist for $100 bucks. Seller had no history of who did the work, but it had signs of a quality rebuild, as all openings were capped off professionally. Done years ago by the looks of it. That is the one that I put on the engine stand a week ago and was checking it out before installing. It only had assembly lube in it. And rotating the crank bolt went smooth enough. Connecting rods and pistons looked ok from the bottom. All I did to it was to make sure the oil pan was sealed up good before I put oil in it. But I failed to notice that straddling rocker. That is why I would hear the odd faint "tick" and not know what it was when I rotated the crank a few times while it was still on the stand. Anyway- When I get it all put back together I will do a compression test for reference. Thanks ALL

  2. Should be pretty similar. I've installed kits from both guys, and they both make good stuff. SJR has been around longer, and been a long time contributor to the community to help develop some of these modifications. I also really like that many of his components are cast aluminum.

  3. Update throttle cable rebuilt. 4 metres long mounted the key barrel into the cover for the wiring, brake line. ( picture to come ) redid a few earth wires. The car fires up sweet from sitting in race seat. got some brake calipers coming for the back. fixed earth wires that go to dash cluster. All earth wires cut off for some reason. now the dash goes. not far away from driving

  4. Get onto that windscreen rust! It’s the worst and will be x10 worse than what you can see with the windscreen in place! Cheers Bennie

  5. Ok I’ll see if I have an FSM for those. To me if you can see that exploded view you’ve got a good shot at figuring it out. Or not .... hang on.

  7. The accelerator pump was exactly the problem. I had put in a new diaphragm right before the fuel pump went out last summer and entirely forgot to put the spring back in. It has been over a year sense last I worked on this thing so I far entirely forgotten. Thanks allot for the help she is running great now

  8. New carb? Used carb? Did you replace the fuel filter at the same time? Sounds like the accelerator pump isn't doing it's job.

  9. I finished installing the extended pitch stop mount, the NEW CV axles, new transmission mounts, and the new battery, cables and tray and the car is in the best place it has ever been! No longer going through axles no longer having electrical issues. I am starting my engine swap to the EJ222 here in the next few weeks, I am just finishing up buying the rest of the stuff I do not have for it. I am also going to post other pictures of my progress.

  11. I don't get the impression that a clean shell is difficult to find in your area, and one without a clean title is not going to stand out. Here, in the land of rusted out hulks, a clean shell would pull $1500. But I see cars with blown engines and otherwise average condition listed for $3-800. If it really just needs an engine, you're probably loosing more in resale than the cost of fixing, even if you're paying someone to do it.

  14. I love reading these old posts on Brat values. I purchased my 1983 Brat GL with automatic transmission, GemTop canopy, good body and 193,900 miles in September 2014 for $1,300. It needed exhaust system and front CV shafts immediately. I have done a lot of work since and probably spend another $2,500 to $3,000. Just finished installing lower mileage EA81 engine and hope to drive it regularly again. I don't know if I could get my money out of it today or not, but don't plan on selling it any time soon so it doesn't matter. I love driving this little pickup and if it turns out to be a good investment great, but if not then it was still worth it.

  15. I purchased a 1986 BRAT with about 214K on it. No rust at all. Bad CV joints and a small oil leak. Given the body I figured I got a decent deal on it @ $2500.00. I just have to work on fixing all these problems now so I can make it a $4000.00 car. However, I think they'll pry this thing out of my cold dead hands.
