  1. I got bored half way through. He didn’t go all out early on to say why it failed until he got to the sump side of things, even then... EJ251 - good engine in my book. Too many people neglect to properly service them and then they fail. Next step is to blame the equipment before taking responsibility for your own actions (or inactions). My 2c anyway. Cheers Bennie

  2. If you have AC the evaporator could be very clogged up with leaves, pet hair or lint. Pull the fan unit and clean out the AC evaporator of any crap that’s in there. Won’t be an easy job but it could be the problem. Cheers Bennie

  3. Viscosity is not crucial on a 1997: 5W30?, 10W30?, 10W40? Its not going to make much of a difference. If you're burning or leaking oil, go with the thicker grades Filter: Subaru OEM?, or Fram?, or Wix? etc. IMHO it really won't matter. WHAT IS IMPORTANT is to change the oil and filter frequently, more frequently than recommended. Keep that oil clean!

  5. I have a 3rd gen now, I loved my 2nd gen OB, but now I need a power liftgate, so Im stuck going 5th gen. Actually compared to cars of similar years they are equal or better then their peers and still on the basic side of technology.

  6. You're looking for a very recent OB, right? I hope that works out well for you. Several late model OBs in my neighborhood that the owners seem happy with. I think I'll end up with a Gen 2 H4 4EAT after considering all the good advice I have received here, and I like the Gen 2 OBs more and more as I get more familiar with them.

  7. or when the owner explained that they had no idea why the engine seized, noting in passing that the "Genie lamp" was lit up on the dashboard for the past few months...

  8. They fail because users treat them like cast-iron V6's.

  9. if you protect sensitive parts in the area, you could use a propane torch (the blue wrench!) to heat cycle it a coupla times. Maybe the last time, carefully spray it with PB Blaster or other penetrant . As it cools, it may pull some penetrant deeper in.

  10. Here was the damage . The inside of the throttle body was corroded, with the throttle plate turning green too.
