  1. "on the first revolution of the engine the rings are wearing in - on the second they are wearing out" Best thing I read today!

  2. Much lifetime warranty stuff is slapped together with minimal attention to quality and the customer becomes the 'final QC'. They can win by the law of averages but 30% or w"ever of their customers may lose. And when a problem is happening to you, it's happening 100% of the time.

  3. You can start it by finishing up the install of a newly rebuilt motor and have it turn over first-crank, all the while listening to FZ's "One Size Fits All" cranked to the t!ts. I'd like to extend an offer for all-y'all to share my pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFx0X3jTHeQ If it doesn't add true beauty to your day, I'll refund your 2:38 .

  5. RockAuto.com will probably have better selection and prices, even after including shipping costs. There is also a 5% discount code that gets posted to the forum every few months.

  6. On the oil change: That's the plan, and as much because that'll help flush whatever bits of the old bearing metal remain in the passages. I tell ya, I had the block run through the washer at a local engine shop and I scrubbed the oil pan first in my cleaning tank, then in the kitchen sink with soap and water, and then ran it through the dishwasher - and there were still teeny little specks of metal in there that I could wipe off with my finger. It was exactly like the bad old days when strippers didn't get arrested for physical contact with the customers and though you could wash off the whipping cream you'd keep finding glitter in your beard no matter how many damn showers you took... at least, that's what I heard from other guys...

  7. Thanks but I already ordered one form the dealer. Got a pretty good price on it and its rebuilt by them and sold as "new" even though he said it has technically been rebuilt, so I'm assuming (hoping) that it's pretty legit. It's originally manufactured by Hitachi for Subaru. Seemed like a pretty good bet, so I went with it. Thanks a ton everybody for all the info!

  8. clean bolts, clean threads, chase threads if needed, reassemble. i'm still going strong on my headgaskets after 4 years after reusing headbolts, I had the rare opportunity of having 2 EA-71's to work with and choose the best headbolts out of the bunch.

  9. Based on GD's comments in the past I think it's minimal. Bearings don't require it and those stock rings are very forgiving. Chrome rings are a different story I believe.

  10. The 220,000 mile Tribeca towed 1,500 pound 72" mower on a sizable trailer over the mountains and lots of 6%+ grades. I waited until a cold snap to help keep things cool....which also meant spending the night on the interstate. I was stopped on the interstate for 1.5 hours due to a wreck - during which time, it started snowing hard. Due to the accident the snow trucks couldn't get through and no one was moving so once we started moving again it was an untreated slick disaster of ice and treachery. Trucks spinning out, tractor trailers jack knifed, cars sliding....After an hour of feeling like i was in a FROGGER game of ice, there were 4 accidents in 5 miles responded to by police/DOT which shut down the interstate. It was the perfect storm of awesome. Anyway - eventually made it home after a chilly night time nap in the trusty Tribeca. I really want to get rid of that thing but it's been phenomenally useful and reliable...even if it is a gas hog.

  11. Yes. Alternators are rebuilt because of bad bearings, brushes, regulators or diodes. If the one at the dealer only had the brushes, bearings and or diodes replaced and still has the OE regulator, it will be a good one. If the regulator was replaced with an aftermarket one, then it is questionable of longevity of the proper charge voltage.

  13. Rebuilds are not what they once were. They used to replace all the parts they could, now they just replace whats bad. So what may have been borderline at the time may have failed in short service. Also "Testing of an alt, if its not done on the car (the old fashioned way) its useless.

  14. There are a lot of bad alt rebuilds out there. I had to go through 4 before I just bought a used one and it worked.

  15. if you can get your hands on a used genuine Subaru unit, you can always have it rebuilt by a local independent rebuilder (starter & alt shop) - that is what I did with my 95's unit.. yeah, i put a parts store one in temporarily while I had the original done and it worked fine for that.. Once i got the rebuilt unit back, it went in the car, and the parts store unit went back in the box & up on a shelf - still have it, i think, lol all in all, it was a little bit more cost wise to have it rebuilt locally, but i ended up with a much better unit than the parts store one, and i supported a local business.

  16. Looks like the same handle used for decades now. $24 shipped to your door. Being a wagon fan I’ve replaced several. I even have one in stock. That handle if it is the same began its run on the GL/DL/ Loyale series. Pardon my eyes if I’m not seeing that as it may be.

  17. Interval is 105,000 miles or 7 years and have used Aisin kits and had good luck on multiple cars. Just don't buy stuff from Amazon or eBay as they can be counterfeits. Rock Auto has good on Aisin kits (Japanese parts). Retail prices for parts at a Subaru dealer can be expensive. Some online dealers give a good discount.
