  1. Check all the fuses? Or at least that the ECU and coil gets power.

  2. The logs for the engine temp sensor looked normal. I am fairly certain that it is the Immobilizer acting up. What I didn't notice at first is that every time it stalls out, the "security" lite comes on.

  3. knock sensor needs attention. I wouldn't rule out partially clogged exhaust. Vacuum gauge might show that.

  4. what your problem is is most likely what is called the clock spring - it provides metal to metal contacts for the horn, airbag, and any steering wheel mounted accessories (stereo controls, cruise, etc) and still allow the steering wheel to rotate. there are proper procedures to follow when dealing with the airbag - a good google search should turn up more info on that. If you are not comfortable tackling that, then i would suggest taking it to a good mechanic and having it done - cost will typically range from 2-400 bucks, depending on your location & the shop.

  5. Also a stuck thermostat, clogged or decrepid radiator, bad cap can cause over heating. Its an old car. Old cars can overheat. Just on Subarus one tends to suspect HG. Actually on any old car that can be suspect.

  7. How did I miss the start of this build? I love the L series and can’t wait to be driving mine again soon! I like that flex section of exhaust pipe you have there, I’ll have to look into where I can source some over my way as it’ll help me out with a project. Cheers Bennie

  8. Pull codes. Could just as easily be a bad ECM as it is a bad knock sensor. Most of those old ECM's have cracked solder joints or other issues by now. GD

  9. Diamond or Subaru OEM. Nothing else is suitable. You should check the plug, injector, and compression first though. Swapping wires is not a sufficient test to call out a coil pack. GD

  10. Thanks again. Whichever slimy stuff they used last looks to be a plenty so I left it as they passed it to me and sliding well. Next time around I’ll address the whole shebang. Sooner or later I’ll get this car up to Subafreak and give consideration to all things suspension. I just won’t rally the beast until ... ok never.

  11. Not any more than anything else that's approaching 20 years old. A lot of mistakes and neglect can happen in that time. My '00 has been well cared-for, and I wish it would run warmer. Only on the hottest days do the coolant temps get above 180, when it's below zero outside, it barely gets over 160. I'm thinking about replacing the OEM stat with a cheap aftermarket one to let it warm up a bit. OEM SOHC headgaskets usually leak oil externally. Overheating is more often caused by dirty radiator, failed fans, plugged heater core, etc.

  12. I would check for worn-out/broken trans mounts 1st.
