  1. I put about 20oz in it and it's cooling well. The compressor was locked up, belt broken and idler adjuster broken. I had to grab a compressor from the yard $45. I had the other parts. New Subaru o-rings and a charge and it working well. PA car, lots of rust. I can hear the rear wheel bearing starting to to. She is an Air Force Cadet in her Senior year. I suggested a nice rust free CO Subaru before she transfers.

  2. Good call on the CV boot, the axles are fairly new, but there was a small hole in the passenger one. That accounts for the smell, now I just need to find the leak. I'm working on another vehicle at the moment, but I'll delve into this one shortly.

  3. even at 17-19 ozs the above info is still light... think about it... 16oz to a lb... 17-19 would be over 1lb - not by much, but still over... the info in the1st post is LESS than a pound.. even at the high end.

  5. Likely. We don't even replace the HG's on the H6's. A replacement JDM engine is too cheap to bother. GD

  6. I joined this Forum back in 2011, under a different name (UberScoober), as a way to learn more about my first car, a '88 GL 4wd Auto Wagon. I have never stopped learning since that day I first joined... and it wasn't long before I wanted to change my Username to something that held a candle to Subaru, instead of making light of Subaru. I had an idea of just how good Subaru was in terms of their quality and reliability before joining the Forum, but now I am a firm believer in that aspect as well as a believer in the great people, the enthusiasts here that help make it all happen. There is nothing quite like the Subaru community, it is something very special indeed, and I'm glad to be a part of it. -6 Star -Chad (IRL)

  11. It needs a new timing kit. new belt is usually pointless because they don't replace the lower cogged idler which is the most prone item to fail. It's an interference engine = bent valves. bare minimum it needs a new Subaru belt and new lower cogged idler: they're like $30 on ebay. best case scenario is a full Subaru or AISIN timing kit and water pump and Subaru thermostat/gasket. that's what i do on any vehicle expected to last awhile. i'll ocassionally go belt and lower idler (bare minimum) if it's rusty or someone really needs to save every penny they can. the other components rarely fail, water pump usually gives plenty of warning, and the tensioner can be visually inspected for hydraulic oil leakage and kept if it's not wet - so they can be avoided and are less risky. look up 2006 outback on cars101.com and look over it's features to familiarize yourself with the ones that are most important to you. ignore everything else - but that's a good resource for the few items that stick out to you. they typically leak oil at the lower headgaskets - keep an eye on it. progressively get worse over time, very manageable, nothing dire.
