  1. Reuse head bolts. Get the 770 gaskets from Subaru. Don't buy cheap junk gaskets. Not worth your time. Hood sticker will state CA compliance. GD

  3. why do you think you need to replace the rotors? are they damaged? out of spec? warped? a small lip of crud around the outside is honestly quite normal.. as long as the braking surface of the rotor is in good condition, and within spec (thickness) there is no need to replace them.

  4. clear the codes with a code reader.. not hard to do. drive the car a bit and see if anything pops back up.

  5. for the fronts at least, you do not need to remove them.. there is a rubber cover over the top - pop that off, shine a small flashlight in there, and you can tell if it is bad or not.. if you can see the ball bearings and/or rust, it needs replacing. (front has bearings for steering purposes) rears don't have the bearing so are less prone to problems, but the rubber does deteriorate over time.

  6. If it still runs, get it up to normal operating temperature. Them go after the fitting, and the intake manifold bolts.

  7. That's the EGR pipe. You have to unscrew the fitting from the manifold. I'd soak it with some penetrating oil for a while before trying to remove it. They can be a bugger. The pipe gets seized in the fitting so the fitting won't turn. Sometimes you have to break out the smoke hatchet to get them free.

  8. Changed lower control arm bushings (genuine Subaru) and front and rear sway bar links (Moog with zerk fittings) and the suspension is now as quiet as new. No need to start removing shocks to evaluate top mounts (necessitating realignment). Now to tackle the noisy exhaust. Used high temp furnace caulk a few years ago and might be time for another coat.

  9. Iceland - really cheap electricity. HUMVEE's have good visibility compared to MRAP's. More armor means smaller windows and lots of cameras. But as far as electric vehicles go - I'll never own or work on them - or probably anything made after 2004. Complexity is the enemy of reliability. Add to that the lack of right to repair and the intellectual property concerns of modern manufacturing, plus the need for corporations like Subaru to show ever-increasing profits and sales by throwing away old vehicles for essentially no reason other than they can't be fixed due to lack of replacement parts, or lack of information to economically repair them..... all in the name of profit. The "environment" would be better served by Reducing and Reusing (the two R's most people forget about) than by creating more plastic things that in reality can't be Recycled anyway. GD
