Yep but I think the damage was done already(he's not sure how long it was leaking). I did fix the leak, It didn't shift right after I refilled it.So I loaded it on to a trailer took the car to my local guru. They took off the trans pan and said "it looked like a hand grenade went off in there, it's toast". So I parked it like a year ago and here we are. I also needish the ej22 from the donor for my car2 points

Well, I have just test driven, and agreed to purchase, this fine example of an early 1984 build 3ed gen JDM Leone sedan. It is the top spec trim, and has digital dash, trip meter, cruise control, air con, and was fitted with the height adjustable suspension (now removed). Trans is 3at auto with part time 4wd. It also has a sweet water to air intercooler setup fitted by the current owner. Drives very well. Pulls harder than my old turbo wagon, with the intercooler. All the electrics work. Best bit? Only 129,000 kms since new. Only issue is leaky sump gasket. Hopefully will collect next week once WOF and rego done. Here's a teaser pic... And yes, I will be keeping Gertie... Keep your eyes peeled for the next stage of her build (she's going up in the world!)1 point

Should share your ej22’s lol haha. Haven’t logged Into here for ages but note I commented ages ago ok when I read it from the start. I should prolly document my one on here instead of FB but I’m pretty sure everyone would get sick of rust repair updates every 6 months.1 point

Always nice to find OEM axles. I have whacked things for hours in the past. Sometimes a better tool is the answer, such as a hub puller like OTC 6574, a beast. Probably didn't bother the transmission, it's mostly solid metal anyway and some of that force goes into the control arm.1 point

IIRC. The viscous LSD unit is separate from the spider gears. If you were to cut that shaft in half, it would be like an open diff.1 point

Nice one! I’m pretty sure I did the same actuator setup in my L series. Remote central locking is awesome. Mine was part of an immobiliser kit so it does more than just lock and unlock my doors Anything that adds a bit of luxury to these old rides is mint in my book! Cheers Bennie1 point

Have been a little busy lately with work and tramping, haven't got around to fitting the twin carbs yet unfortunately (not as easy as I thought as it will require brazing a small pipe onto the heater crossover to feed the coolant to the carb bases, also have to build a choke mechanism as these didn't come with one unfortunately as they were in a jet boat and just had some wire hooked onto them). I may end up actually using these carbs on an EJ22 in my green sedan but more on that thread. I've got a second MPFI EJ22 sitting in the north island for Gertie anyhow (yes, another one) along with a set of near new Maxxis 185r14 muddies. These will be going on a set of Peugeot 14" steelies that I've picked up, need to get them sandblasted and painted. I'll almost certainly run this EJ22 in MPFI form, unless I can find an EJ18 carb and dizzy (wagon is currently carb and wiring looks scary). Also need an adapter plate, lift kit and a torqlocker, and then we're done. Currently waiting on Subarino to release their L series kit... Also broke one of my headlight covers on a recent trip away behind Hanmer into some snow. Damn gravel roads. No fear as you can actually still buy these new, and I have two spare sets of headlights anyhow. New steering wheel fitted from SAAS along with hub, feels so much better than the original plastic one that was falling to bits. And lastly a pic of what she should look like when finished1 point

Picking up a SOHC EJ22 with matching FWD 5 speed out of an early Legacy tomorrow evening. Gearbox should be compatible with stock mounts and axles if I've done my reading right. Engine should also bolt onto factory crossmember and early SOHC heads should clear the chassis rails. I will build the motor with the high compression pistons and high lift cams before putting it in so not happening any time soon. Will also have to chat with a certifying engineer to get it all signed off, may have to upgrade brakes as it's going from 1600 to 2200 cc. Not too sure if I will run it with MPFI or twin carbs yet, I'll be grabbing ECU etc in case I go EFI but I'm tempted to twin carb it using the factory mechanical secondary Hitachis posted above... However these are jetted for an 1800 EA81S so not too sure if they'll work well for the EJ22. Otherwise I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a pair of IDF Weber carbs, missed out on a set last week dammit. Here's a pic of the garage as we all love pics1 point

She's going well, have been driving her at least once a week on small excursions. Picked up a few bits today from a retiring boat-builder in Rakaia who uses Subaru motors in his jet boats... EA81S twin carb setup, recently rebuilt (to go on the EA82 in my blue wagon Gertie) Also grabbed some high lift EJ18 cams, high compression EG33 pistons and Weber down draught manifolds to build a carby EJ22 to go in the green machine eventually... This will be paired with a FWD EJ gearbox with an STi LSD.1 point

Drove it up a skifield and back, 3 hour round trip, had it at 4 k rpm most of the way up Mt Hutt, and 3 k most of the way from Chch to Hutt and back on the open road... It's then sat for 2 weeks. Without being driven. I doubt it's the carb or intake gasket as the oil is really milky and well up the dipstick, looks like it's had a lot of coolant mixed in. I might just pull the ea82 and reseal it as I've got a complete gasket set in the shed and can borrow a hoist and engine stand off a mate. Also have the original motor too for extra bits. I might actually rebuild the original motor as I suspect that's also got a blown HG but without coolant/oil mixing. Also doesn't burn any oil, compared with the replacement motor I fitted which does. Will be a wee while till I have spare time to rebuild a motor though, am in the middle of renovating my bathroom!1 point

I have 40+ years of experience as a certified advanced level Master Tech and I am still employed in the field full time. I own a 1989 GL10 Turbo wagon (EA82T / 4EAT) in good shape along with a pretty good stash of extra parts. I own 2 other EA wagons as well. One is a lifted 1983 GL wagon with an EJ22, custom built 3.9 full time dual range trans, and a clutch style LSD rear diff. The second one is an AWD 1992 Loyale with an EJ22, EJ 5MT transmission, and a 5 lug conversion. Both cars have 4 wheel disc brakes. According to some people I must be an idiot too. Do I care what other people think about me, my cars, or what I do? Don't think so. I do what makes ME happy. I still hang out here and enjoy the USMB a lot. In my opinion this is one of the best resources online for older Subarus. I still check in here almost every day but I rarely post here anymore. Some people that post here seem to have moved on from EA Subarus and are down on our old cars for some reason. People world wide are restoring cars every day that are way harder to get parts for than an old Subaru. I say do what YOU want and what makes YOU happy. Will you make mistakes? Yes. Will you learn from them? Yes, without a doubt. I know I have. I am following your thread and enjoying it. Please keep it updated1 point
