  1. I primed mine using a drill press literally as an arbor press. I placed each lifter upright in a can of oil and then pressed into the dimple firmly for 20-30 seconds using a rounded rod chucked in the drill collet. I watched tiny air bubbles being forced out the bleed hole along with some old oil on each stroke. I did this until no more air was coming out. Maybe 5-6 strokes. This is a very slow process but it 100% assures that you have no air in the lifter and even better, you get a bit of a feel for a defect if one lifter bleeds down way too fast compared to others. I did this process on used HLAs that had been sitting for 14 years in the engine. I've not heard a single tick since the day I fired up the engine. I did new oil pump seals and other common lifter anti-tick tips too.

  2. Its been a long time since I posted anything here on my RX. Its been sitting for almost 5yrs after blowing a HG and during that process, it overheated and blew coolant all over my chest and face. So I parked it 5yrs ago, that'll teach it I had another EJ22T sitting on a stand that I was going to build for another project, but I figured I could work on that one while the old engine stayed in the RX. I did pull it earlier this year and pulled the RX out of my storage area so I could have better access for working on stuff that I want to do. The engine is basically done and ready to go in, not sure if I want to drop it in now and drive it (I'm jonesing for boost) but if its sat for this long, I can wait a while longer while I do more upgrades. I used ACL race main bearings, King race rod bearings. Hastings rings, kept the old pistons. PnP the heads. New valves. Killer B oil pan/pickup tube/diffuser. New timing covers with Mitsuboshi timing belt and NSK idlers. OEM waterpump and a aluminum radiator off ebay. Picked up a set of no name headers and wrapped them. 800cc injectors and a ECU from a 95 JDM WRX with ESL Live software to tune the engine. Also have a VF39 turbo, a upgrade from the TD04. Cometic MLS headgaskets. Perrin lightweight crank pulley. And lots of cleaning and polishing. Was watching one of the cars shows one morning and as they were doing their usual sales pitch for sponsors, they had some new paint from duplicolor called Metalcast. Made to go over polished metal. O'Reillys carries and I got a few cans. The intake manifold turned out awesome, but the paint comes off real easy, so be aware (I will install intake after engine is in). Prob missing some stuff, a lot of parts were on the car before this upgrade session. Lets see how many pics I can post

  3. Yeah, that's a new thing I'm seeing too. I don't like it either - it takes up too much screen real estate. If I want those stats I know where to find them. Who's messing with the configuration and why?

  4. Hi jonathan, Thanks for sharing your picker/wrecker experiences. I have a question about viewing these forum posts. Recently, the left frame of my screen has been overtaken with viewing stats. It lists who the top posters are, the most popular days, etc. I can't find any way to remove that from the display. In other words, is it possible to see the posts full screen without them being scrunched to one side by the stats? Thanks for your reply. mrfixiter

  5. I wound up replacing that caliper and bled it, good call. I also haven't been getting any update emails for USMB threads. B and Z and I went to Minnesota for a weekend a couple weeks ago. Sort of on the way we did the last portion (~100 miles?) of the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail. Definitely less paved than the southern portion I did years ago but only the northernmost 10-20 miles were at all challenging and had side trails. We did hike to Morgan Falls which is fairly unique. One lookout tower was at a sandy hilltop with a lot of narrow trails going down the hill in various directions but they all looked fairly steep so we decided not to try them. Nothing else around there I know about or have seen for full size off roading so it's like a tiny island probably not worth visiting again. We headed to Duluth and then went north to public land. After a while we starting hitting some moderately challenging trails and lots of dirt and gravel roads. We eventually got to Boundary Waters, Z and I had never been there and have always wanted to see it. We did a little hiking and only saw a tiny portion of it but it's obvious why it's an outdoorsman's dream. Tons of lakes, some portaging trails, and no wheeled traffic allowed. We knew Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes but I always thought there were a lot of lakes in northern WI and MI. In northern MN there are lakes everywhere, it's probably hard to go a mile or two without seeing one. There were also mosquitos everywhere, more than the UP if anything. The maps seemed much more accurate than the UP, which was mostly good. We were on a few very overgrown trails that probably mainly get used by snowmobiles that went for miles but did eventually go through, and did a few long loops of fairly rocky trails. This is B's Forester going through a hole viewed out the windshield of my car. The main obstacles that caused us to turn around were badly washed out roads. Probably not by coincidence beavers appeared to have dammed up the culverts. One seemed like with a lot of effort we could have gone over it but it was getting late so we just camped nearby. Not as many side trails as the UP in general. We did find quite a few stunt areas and got stuck in at least one. On the way back we stopped in Twin Harbors, had PB&Js, checked out the ore docks, old trains, etc. Overall seemed like a decent area for trail riding but almost twice as far from home as the UP. Afterwards the 6MT low range was making noise while coasting. B and I removed and inspected it. Not much more wear than the last time it was out. Replaced a couple parts while it was out of the car and got it back in. Still have to reconnect shifters, driveshaft, and exhaust and test it out but hopefully good for a while. Wanted to look at it before putting one in my Impreza too.

  6. Any wrecker should stand behind its parts, period, and moreso if they're a full-service yard, because they're making quite a bit more money on them than would a self-serve. And forget "implied" warranty - they should explicitly state it. Around here, the two Pick'n'Pull yards get most of our business, and by default they give a 30-day warranty (for credit if the parts are unsuitable or fail, which essentially means "no reason necessary"). Of course, of late they've been trying to upsell an "extended" warranty for a few extra bucks, but what do I look like - a rube? (I haven't been dealing with the other self-serve yard here (Bucks) this year, because they're a division of Evraz, which is owned by a Russian oligarch, and "Ukraine". Also, their inventory just isn't well-organized like Pick'n'Pull's. And I only go to the full-service wreckers when I absolutely have to, as was the case last year with getting a new gas tank for my '01 H6 Outback, since the self-serve yards appear to have a running competition to see who can punch the most holes in a tank to drain it when the car first comes in.)
