Awesome! So you think the cables were bad? In case it comes back keep these things in mind: 1. replace the starter contacts. Starter is 2 12mm bolts and easy to remove. Disassemble it and the contacts are like $10. Much cheaper and more reliable than aftermarket new starters which can fail in less than a year. The old contacts will be burnt, pitted, warn. 2. Older gen Subaru's very commonly have a starter signal issue from the signal wire/ignition/reference voltage. Here's a thread that I think somewhat describes it.

was driving my parents GM that had same happen. Turned out that due to it's design, a rivet style of construction that anchored horn to the brackt came llose, horn swiveled on bracket causing earth switched electrical contact male spade, to touch the metal bracket, earthing it I think most horns are earth switched, so even the wire rubbing on the body somewhere can trigger them

another update, left battery to charge for a while and now it starts

I have no help, but there is a LR in the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy that has no starter and no parking brake....leads to some interesting comedic moments.
