  2. Still looking for wiring information? I can send you wiring info for Impreza out of FSM. It should be the same for Legacy. Drop me a PM with your snail mail address and I can send it off to you.
  3. A while back someone posted a fine write-up on replacing the lights in the Impreza climate control assembly. I found the one for the Legacy in the Repair Manual but haven't been able to locate the one I think I remember for the Impreza. Anyone find it or have a decent set of directions? Thanks.
  4. Weather has been crazy lately. Normally Seattle winters are very mild and I remember living in NJ fondly. Taconic Auto Sports Club used to run regular ice khanas at a small lake just over the NJ/NY border about 90 minutes from where I lived. Weekly events for 6 to 8 weeks while the ice lasted. I suspect there haven't been any this year if TASC is still running them. Yea, and Seattle had the worst cold snap I've seen in the 20 years I've lived out here....about the same time as you guys had your "fake" spring weather.
  5. Welcome to the Board. Opinions (expert or otherwise) are always welcome. Discussion only makes us all smarter.
  6. I've thought about a front LSD so often it's in my dreams. Not practical and I've never heard of anyone doing it. Converting the rear diff to LSD has often been done and is well documented.
  7. I've seen this happen three times before and in all three cases there was no damage to the tranny stub axle. With any luck at all, you'll just need to pull the wrong axle, clean up the mess and install the correct axle. Good luck with it.
  8. If you have an automatic transmission, some of the control is with electric solenoid; if the voltage is too low, those could cause the solenoids not to work consistently. Check the belt tension first; you might be pleasantly surprised and it would be a quick and easy fix.
  9. The diode trio in the alternator is failing (not the ones that charge the battery, but the ones that control the warning light circuit). Usually this is a pre-cursor to the alternator failing to charge. Best bet is to get a cheap alternator from PAP to confirm the fix and then have your alternator rebuilt by a reputable shop (Marine Electric in Ballard is excellent).
  10. Ditto on the alternator; might be as simple as the belt is slipping, but more likely time to replace the alternator.
  11. Connie, just another thought. If you're planning on upgrading the EA82 to an EJ22 engine, consider upgrading to an EJ18. The EJ18 I have on our '94 Impreza is rock solid bullet proof, revs freely, and goes! It doesn't have quite the torque of the EJ22, but would be a very manageable engine to replace the EA82. About the same work too, but the big difference is cost. I see EJ18s on craigslist all the time for around $150 in good running condition; early Imprezas (especially the FWD version) that have been totalled go for a song because they have the smaller engine and everyone wants an EJ22. Rocky would love the EJ18; I don't think you'd be sorry. Good luck with all the upgrades. And yes, Rocky is very pretty. One last item, the EJ18 gives me over 30mpg on the highway and I only get around 25mpg with our EJ22 powered wagon. One time coming back from a rallycross in Portland, fully loaded with tires and tools, and rolling right along it got 34mpg!
  12. Connie, if you're planning on getting the brakes to work better, consider up grading to rear disks; it's easy, not too expensive and you'll never be sorry you did it.
  13. Looks like they are still available. http://www.silverstone.com.my/tyre_s505_spec.asp
  14. These are already spoken for: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61918&highlight=rally+tires But you might do a google search for Silverstone tires and the S-505 is available in a 13" size. Tabor Rally Team sells them in the Portland area if they are still available.
  15. Frankly, I think chains on an AWD Subaru are completely un-necessary providing you put reasonable tires on the car. I've never needed them in the 19 years I've lived in the NW (first 6 of which I was driving a RWD Mazda pickup). Anyway, the law as I understand it is, that you never have to put chains on your AWD car even when chains or traction tires are required of others in the Passes. BUT, you ARE required to have chains in your car. Now I don't understand that, but that is what the State Police told me many years ago. I have a set of chains which would fit; I've owned them for 14 years and never even opened the box. I do suspect there would be some damage to your AWD drivetrain using chains; check your owner's manual or with your dealer. My suggestion, buy a set of true winter snow tires and mount them on a 2nd set of wheels and run them when the weather requires it. I have a set of fine studless Hakki's that I put on in November and take off in April when I run on a set of summer tires. Best of both worlds.
  16. Need to have the donor be from a 2wd turbo. Everything on the 4WD is the same except the hub and the backing plate are different on the 2WD.
  17. Just for your information, the OEM stock struts are made by KYB; maybe not to the same specs as the GR2's.
  18. GR2's were installed on my '91 Legacy wagon at 73K miles by the previous owner. I bought it at 95K and have always liked the ride. Now at 182K the car is still extremely stable. I think much of that is due to the GR2's. Did you pull them off the white '93 at Lynnwood PAP?
  19. I too have had better luck with used shafts off a wreck at the PAP yards. Certainly less pain if a $30 axle fails than a $80 re-man. The work is usually worth more than the axle. Good luck with it.
  20. You know that somehow is a default title likely due to my large number of posts. I certainly wouldn't describe myself as that. I'm going to have to think about editing that with something more appropriate.
  21. Thanks for the compliment, but I'm really a pretty inexperienced mechanic. I can do enough to keep myself out of trouble, but I'm certainly not in the same league as qman or Dr. RX or some others on the USMB. They can tell you I'm not afraid to ask for help or info when it's something I've never done before.
  22. Funny, I have the "snout" of a driveshaft from an EA81 tranny so I can use it to keep the oil from running out if I have the driveshaft removed. Someday, I'll cut off the tranny input shaft so I have an alignment tool for centering the clutch disk. Thanks for the feedback.
  23. I'm helping a neighbor replace the clutch on his son's '84 Hatch. We'll have the engine out shortly and he's thinking of doing the headgaskets since the coolent keeps "disappearing." I'm not so sure the head gaskets are bad since the engine looks good externally and seems to run okay and reportedly doesn't (hasn't) overheat. Would an air impact tool on the crank pulley turn the engine over fast enough to check the compression? Or does anyone have a junk mechanical tranny we can cut the bellhousing off so we can re-install the starter motor to check the compression. Or we can just check the compression before we actually pull the transmission? Sorry, answered my own question. Funny how that goes sometime.
