  1. I bought a 94 Impreza with the 1.8 engine and manual transmission for rallycross purposes. The engine is just great; much more willing to rev than the 2.2 on my Legacy; but you'll notice it hasn't got quite as much low end torque. An odd thing, it came with low profile 16" tires/wheels and the car was a stone...wouldn't get out of its own way. When I installed 14" tires and wheels (stock size), the car changed completely and it had lots of pickup. I'm not the expert on engines but I suspect it might even be more reliable than the 2.2. One other thing; gets great gas mileage compared to the 2.2; 28+ highway compared to my wife's Impreza at 24.
  2. Same room is available the night before; I'll even make sure you're up in time to get there!
  3. Depending on when it is, if you need a place to "crash" before heading home we'd have room for you here (Bothell, WA) for one night. Worst case, you'd have to sleep in our RV.
  4. A neighbor recently got a nice 4WD hatch for his young son to use as his daily driver. My neighbor doesn't know much about Subarus but was impressed with my obvious love of them (5 sitting in our driveway). Anyway, I thought I'd get him a copy of How to Keep Your Subaru Alive by Larry Owens. I found one for a reasonable price on Amazon's used book section. It came yesterday. As I tore open the padded envelope, my heart sank; it was a hard-cover book. Oh shoot, I thought, they sent the wrong book. No, to my surprise, it was a hard-cover copy of HTKYSA! I've never seen a hard copy version of it before. Anyone else have one by chance? Now I'm debating keeping it for future speculation because of its rarity. It was originally a library book from Longmont, CO. They released it in 2000 to a used book dealer. It's in pretty decent shape although it's obviously been used. Now I've got to look for another copy.
  5. Yes, Erik posted the cancellation notice on both nasioc and special stage. Hopefully, they will reschedule soon. I was really looking forward to this one.
  6. Black smoke....means running rich. Don't know why it stopped. Is your air cleaner clogged by chance?
  7. 25 splines is definitely for the turbo. It'll fit without any trouble until you drive off when it will shear off the roll pin and spin on the stub axle (been there, done that). All is not lost however, since I'm sure some turbo owner will buy it from you.
  8. Another plug for the GR2's. Previous owner of my Legacy wagon installed them at 73K miles. Car is now over 175K miles and the handling is still great.
  9. If you can meet me somewhere along the way, you're welcome to ride down with me if you like. Heck, you might even want to run my car just for grins.
  10. Yea, that's about right; I need to leave home at 5:15 to get there by 7am. I just don't like to rush breakfast and it gets enough calories into my system for a good run on times.
  11. Take lots of pics please so we can join in the festivities later. Have a great time.
  12. I'm planning on having breakfast at the Red Barn Restaurant (just 1/10 mile west of exit 88) around 7am. I hate to eat alone. Great food and lots of it here.
  13. A more detailed link can be found on Special Stage. http://www.specialstage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24143
  14. http://pacificrallygroup.com/RCI101506.html Last event of the season and a new venue. It should be a good one.
  15. Really fun course this event. Challenging corners and fast if you could find and execute the right lines. And pretty long too with the top cars running in the high 1:30's. Results can be found at http://www.oregonrally.com/files/RX_10_8_2006.pdf. No pics since I'm playing with the movie capability of my camera. I can send out two CD's (980Mb!) of clips if you PM me an address and can cover my costs (about $2.50).
  16. Skip, this is Qman. I think you are spot on with your hypothosis. With the described condition of the vehicle it sounds like there could be a slight build up on the valves. For the money though, I would just reseal and gasket the motor for no other reason than an insurance policy. It is already out and you will be able to check the valves visually that way. On a complete side note. I have a better set for you now that it has been way too long. Send(pm) me an address and I will attempt to get these in the mail before the 2nd coming!! Ken

  18. I'm trying to reach you by PM regarding the seats. I might be coming down to Portland tomorrow. It would be helpful if I can get in touch before I leave.
  19. You did well. $4500 value is not far off the mark. If you get a polishing wheel and take about 4 hours on each wheel, they can look like this: Or you can spend $75 per wheel and pay someone else to do it like I did. What we won't do for our Brats.
  20. 4WD, GL-10 version in white with blue interior. Seats are that blue velour and in fine shape. Rear disks are still on it but turbo unit is gone. Legacy sedan ('92) with teardrop type alloy wheels.
  21. Stock LSD was 3.700 ratio; easy to convert to 3.900 for use on most of the EA81 and EA82 models.
  22. You might try Primitive Racing at www.get-primitive.com; Paul is not local to you but Tigard, OR is not too far for quality protection. I have both the skidplate for the engine and rear diff on my Impreza; under $240 for both installed on my car.
  23. Sorry to disagree with your diss of Redline, but I have to recommend the Redline 75W-90NS which is what they suggest for "older" transmissions with synchro problems. When I bought our '91 Legacy wagon it came with a significant "crunch" when shifting into 2nd and down into 1st. I changed the oil when I bought the Legacy and found that the "crunch" disappeared in the next 3 to 6 months. Being a bit skeptical, there was always the possibility that I was compensating for the defect in the synchros and that it wasn't the oil at all. Since then I've put 75K miles on the car and the transmission is shifting just fine (due for another oil change in the next year of so). More recently, I bought a '94 Impreza sedan with a much more definite "crunch" shifting in the lower gears. I only use the Impreza for rallycross and while any of our daily driver's is out of service. I changed the transmission oil shortly after I bought it and again used the Redline NS oil. In the few miles I've driven the car (around 5K) the "crunch" is definitely diminished and I have to purposely rush the shift to see even a hint of it. This Impreza comes with a "short shifter" installed which likely takes its toll on the synchros. After two good successes with the Redline I see no reason to try anything else. The cost of the Redline (4 quarts at less than $10 per quart) for 75K to 100K is really insignificant. Information can be found at Redline's website: http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?productID=38&subCategoryID=15&categoryID=6
  24. Another thought is that the round part of the CVJ that seats in the backside of the hub had dirt in the way of proper seating; as that dirt disappears, the nut appears to loosen.
