  1. There's a blank plastic piece that just takes up space. You'll remove it when you install the CD.
  2. CD player plugs right into the existing stock radio. Also needs a separate cable to power the backlighting for the CD. If you don't get the cable with the CD, it's easy to make one from existing automotive connectors acquired from a donor car. Lots of CD players are available on ebay in the $50 to $100 range. Just make sure it's compatible with your year; I can't vouch for whether the newer ones will fit or hook up correctly. Mechanical installation is a breeze providing you find all the screws for removing/installing.
  3. Austin, I'll be by today and you can look at mine.

  5. 2WD and 4WD backing plates are different. I forget the difference but that's the only part that won't interchange when doing the swap from drums to disk.
  6. Galen, we have a whole group of people "racing" EA81s (see the post on the results of the last rallycross). Better yet, come down to Hillsboro, OR next weekend and see (and run) for yourself! http://www.oregonrally.com/. Check the results link for information. Local USMB people are running 1st four overall in the truck/suv class currently. Join the fun! Just another comment: I recently joined SCCA and declared Oregon as my "local" region. When NW Region gets going on rallycross, I'll change allegiance; but so far there seems to be no interest in getting events started up here.

  8. You did well Mike; I'm not sure my extra weight helped you or hurt you. You did feel quite fast. I enjoyed how cleanly and quickly you did that first slalom. And you actually felt like you had traction almost all of the time.
  9. My '86 wagon is out for repair, but when I have it back, I could take pictures for you and send them. Let me know if you have broadband; my photos are about 250K and I don't know how to get them to smaller filesize.
  10. Best of luck, the more the merrier. See you there next week. It's in Hillsboro, OR at the fairgrounds (across from the airport). If you're running truck/suv, get there early since our class is running in the morning this time--8AM registration and tech! ORG hasn't updated their site to reflect the changes and I know you're coming a long way.
  11. I remember your coming in with the 1:37 under your belt. You were certainly pumped! Do what I do, write down all your times and know what your total is when they announce results. If your total is less than any announced trophy winners, you can ask right then. I'd still check with them about it. Also, what class were you running in? I was looking for you in the results and couldn't find you (not knowing a last name might have something to do with that). Hey, all the competition will make us all better. I'm looking forward to seeing you on the 14th.
  12. I actually beat my son on the third run by two seconds. Usually he beats me by 10 to 15. I am getting better. And it's so much fun. I get another chance at him in another 10 days or so at Hillsboro. I should beat him there since our class will run in the morning and he has trouble getting up that early. Also Luke Ebert will be there; I haven't beaten him yet either. Go Blue Brat!
  13. Results are up: http://www.oregonrally.com/?page=results Everybody ready for the next one in Hillsboro, OR on 9/14? USMB folk are top 5 in the truck/suv class for the first two events.
  14. I'm thinking about going that route and would probably prefer the Amsoil. However, what have you guys got against the OEM oil filters from Subaru?
  15. The results are posted: http://www.oregonrally.com/?page=results
  16. Black smoke means too rich a mixture--either too much gas or too little air. Check the air filter and flapper valve in the air intake to make sure it's not stuck shut. If your local emissions laws don't require looking under the hood, get a weber, mine passed emissions here in Washington state and they don't look under the hood if it passes the sniffer test. Also, it looks like you need to find another shop; they should at least be able to tell you where/what the problem is. It could be as simple as a mixture adjustment on the carb.
  17. You have to make good on your thought of moving to the Seattle or Portland area. I can think of three excellent independents here in Seattle and I know of one in Vancouver, WA (and I don't even live in the Portland area).
  18. Sorry, I missed the part about cleaning the oil relief valve. Too early in the morning for me. Are you sure the spring is still at the same tension/compression? If the heat from the engine has changed the temper of the spring, it could be opening at too low a pressure. Just a thought.
  19. I can't take credit for this (belongs to qman) but the rational behind it makes sense. I have some jpgs to go with this but can't post them since I haven't figured out how to get them down to the 51K limit (they are about 250K each). I can forward them to anyone interested (better have broadband--there are 6 of them). However, here's the spiel: Valve Clatter Fix After you’ve tried detergent oil fixes (Marvel Mystery Oil, Rislone, Kersosene, Engine Flush, etc.) and eliminated a worn oil pump, oil pump seal, and everything else that might allow air to get into the hydraulic lifters causing them to clatter, you might try this before you tear the engine down to get to the lifters themselves. Credit for this goes to qman and I think it may be the fix for those EA82 engines where the clatter seems to come and go at will and the oil pressure seems good. Remove the cam cover on the side that seems to be most prone to clatter (or you might need to do this on both sides). With the cam cover removed, see the 14mm stud with the horizontal tube welded to it. This stud is actually hollow and houses an oil passage check valve. The purpose of the check valve is to not allow oil into the horizontal tube (which is used to squirt oil onto the cams) until an oil pressure of 15PSI is reached. The purpose of that pressure is to fill the hydraulic lifters. IF THAT 15 PSI IS NOT ATTAINED, THE LIFTERS WILL CLATTER! The clatter will occur if the valve is stuck open due to crud in the oil, a stuck valve cup, or a weak spring allowing the check valve to open at low (i.e. less than 15 PSI) pressure. If that’s the case, the repair is to remove the cam cover, remove the 14mm stud, remove the spring, remove the cup and clean the valve seat and the components (a q-tip will do a good job cleaning the valve seat, just don’t leave any cotton residue in there). You can stretch the spring if you like to cause the check valve to open at a higher pressure, but it’s best to just replace the spring (p/n 15020AA011 and it’s only $2.70 at your dealer). Re-assemble as needed (I don’t know the torque needed to re-tighten the 14mm stud, but since it’s hollow you can easily break it off if you over-tighten it. Now is also a good time to replace the cam cover gaskets and rubber grommets sealing the cam cover.
  20. 51" is what bratsarus1 tells me for the one-piece on the Brat with the 5 speed d/r. I suspect it would be the same for the wagon but I couldn't say for sure.
  21. alt.autos.subaru is the name of one newsgroup. If you use Outlook Express, click on messages, go down to newsgroups and click on it. Then page down to alt.autos.subaru and subscribe to it. No charge for that; it's usually a benefit from your ISP.
