  1. Mark, most definitely you need to raise the engine an inch or two to remove the cross-over pipe. I'm not sure what else you need to loosen to raise the engine however.
  2. Ticking noise sounds like valve clatter. Lots of info on that from oil pump to oil pump seal to faulty check valve spring. I'd go the MMO route first since it's the cheapest, but don't expect success on the first oil change. One member took this approach and it took a year of driving before the valve clatter was gone. As far as the vibration is concerned, does the vibration go away when you let off on the gas? If so, check the rubber boot on the inner joint of the axles. Probably torn and vibration is due to a bad DOJ on that axle. Good luck.
  3. Look at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/wheels2/wheels.html for all the possible wheels that are easily available for you car.
  4. Kelly, what you are asking is not possible. Talk to any alternator rebuilder and he will tell you that the full output of any alternator whether it's 50, 60, 90 amps or more is only obtained at high rpm. Below 1500 rpm, the 30 amp discharge you see is what you're going to get regardless of the total output capability of your alternator.
  5. Many remanufactured axles are no better than the one you removed except for the fact that the boots and grease have been replaced. Go with a re-manufacturer that warranties their axles and don't be shy about bringing back any that don't meet muster. I would not suggest putting the old one back on the other side. I suspect that the '92 Loyale is the same as my '86 GL wagon and that both sides are identical. I've had good success with axles from http://www.cvaxles.com/. Cost for my old car was $55 per axle plus shipping plus a refundable core charge of $55.
  6. Don't waste your money. IMHO nothing works noticably better than the standard NGK plug (my personal choice).
  7. It's normal to have inadequate current at low rpm. Alternator will need at least 1500 rpm for reasonable output; 2000 rpm is better. Below 1500 your battery should have sufficient energy to keep your lights running. If not, you may have faulty wiring or a bad ground connection. Any decent alternator shop can change the pulley on a XT6 unit and mount the pulley for your EA81 or 82. This will increase the amp output at high rpm to 80 or 90 amps, but still won't do much for you under 1500 rpm.
  8. Sorry, I didn't connect with the 9/15 date. However, I'll be in Portland area that weekend; wedding on Saturday and rallycross on Sunday.
  9. Hey don't knock the Peugeot! It's a great source for 14" and 15" rims. Without Peugeot, you'd be crying the blues for affordable oversize wheels.
  10. Does your '84 have the vented rotors? If not consider replacing the rotors and calipers with the vented type. They are more effective with stopping ability. Also, replacing the rear drums with disks is also an option. Rear disks are economically feasible if you get the parts from the junkyard.
  11. Don't cry, there are a number of alloy wheels available from Subaru and they get posted periodically on the USMB. I have a set of snowflake alloys that I'm about to post. Find what's available at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/wheels2/wheels.html
  12. For the most part, plug them up. Follow cameron's directions as indicated in a previous post and you should be okay.
  13. You'll need the flywheel from the donor car also (I think). Linkage from your car can be modified to allow the inside of the car to appear "stock." Check with Jerry (bratsarus1) who has done more of these mods than anyone I know. The one piece driveshaft is considerably nicer in my Brat than the two piece version that came off the donor car, but it's not necessary to make it work; it can always be added later.
  14. The 32/36 weber is designed for 1.5L to 2.0L engines so you should be okay. Jetting might need to be modified from the EA 81. archemitis, what did you rig up for the throttle return spring? I like you 20 washers and wonder if you have a similar neat and simple idea for the return spring.
  15. Try http://www.1stsubaruparts.com or http://www.expressautoparts.com. 1stsubaru is a sube dealer with good discount and reputation. ExpressAuto is an "aftermarket" parts source. OEM: something like original equipment parts; I'm not sure how it got to M but the term refers to parts from the original manufacturer of the vehicle.
  16. Jerry (bratsarus1) had a one piece drive shaft made for my Brat to replace the two-piece one installed after the 5 speed conversion. It even came with zirk fittings Works just fine for me. Shop is somewhere in Yakima, WA.
  17. Had an older Turbo that smelled musty from sitting for two years. Zap had an "home" remedy from an old Sube mechanic. Apple parts. Cut up a could of apples into segments (the more the better) and spread them around the floor of the car front and rear. As they dry out, they will pull the musty odor out of the car. Replace them every two weeks or so until the odor is gone. I tried everything on the turbo (baking soda, air fresheners, fabreeze, etc.); nothing worked until I cut up some old apples.

  19. Actually the Durango lost to two (even if Eric and I were both driving the same car). If Eric had had his '82 Brat the results would still have been the same; Eric has won the class almost every time he runs; I think his worst finish was a 2nd!
  20. Andy, you can come visit anyway. Bumbershoot is on all weekend and I held off on shipping the rust penetrant since I thought you'd be here. Oh well.
  21. Camper could sleep four, but each pair would need to be comfortable with being "intimate." So, two for the camper would work. If you have a tent, I've got plenty of yard to set one up. Let me know if that works for you
  22. Are your goats trained not to leave the yard? I've got a ton of underbrush and blackberry bushes to get rid of; bring it on. If you can't find a place, you can park yourselves in our camper. I'm pretty sure it's available. Just let me check with Jeanne to make sure that she's not using it this weekend.
  23. Mike, not to be ashamed of your times. Due to the rutting there were a few spots where I think they actually shortened the course compared to the morning. Having seen it both ways, I think the morning had better traction most of the time, but the afternoon was quicker (I think). Thanks for the rides. I posted this link in the Off Topic Forum, but I think it'll get more action here: http://www.pdxsports.com/photos/showindex.asp?folder=200308rallyx If I'm not mistaken, these are primarily photos from the morning.
