What year headlights will fit my 86 GL wagon?
edrach replied to smithe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Gloyal is correct, '85 and '86 are exact replacements. I've used '87 and later by just bolting in the bracket to the fender which the same for all years and then using a tie wrap to secure the inner support. No cutting or bending required. The other althernative is to remove the headlamp from the '87 or later bracket and install it in the '85/86 bracket. That's a bit of a pain but it can be done. -
Thanks for the update. Looks like I'll be bringing the mudders but not installing them. I'm sure glad they managed to repair the field in the most necessary areas; it certainly needed it.

The Rallycross Board has considered the changes submitted and come up with a group of proposed changes to the regs for 2009. They have asked to no longer comment to older threads, but confine discussion to http://www.sccabb.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=6590&TPN=1 in a effort to keep new discussion in one place. Primary changes for 2009 include opening up allowable tires in the Stock classes and allowing front swaybar changes. For the Prepared classes the most significant change is allowing a LSD. Modified changes are there also but beyond my experience to even comment on them. I need some time to think about the proposed changes and comment, but fortunately they are not as draconian as I had feared. Thanks to all who submitted input to the RXB.

If you don't like SCCA's rules or have suggestions to improve them NOW is the time to send your politely worded comments/suggestions to the Rallycross Board. Check out the rallycross forums and see what others are thinking about sending to the RXB and make sure you get your 2 cents submitted. The discussions forums are just that, forums. The RXB members don't necessarily read them. The ONLY official way to comment on rules changes is to e-mail RXB@scca.com with your comments. The discussion forums can be found at http://www.scca.org. ---ed---

Electrical gremlins.... voltage related
edrach replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I go with a faulty alternator. Drop me a call if you'll consider a used XT alternator. I have one in my "stash." Pay me after you've tried it for a week or so. -
I always buy OEM parts from Jason at Mike Scarf Subaru (1stsubaruparts.com). I find it's easier to call Jason at 866-528-5282 (toll free) than to wade through the junk on the website. He ships anywhere in the country and the shipping cost for small items is usually offset by not having to pay sales tax (unless you're in WA state).

Top rear shock mount bolt (x2) dramas .
edrach replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All of the above suggestions are correct. I tend to use an excellent rust penetrant (called Yield) or Kroil; both are better than PB Blaster. Spray the part of the bolt that extends out past the body well on the inside. Spray the portion coming out liberally also. Back and forth is the way to go; and patience. If you try to rush this job you'll break the bolt as well as get a charley horse in your arm. Good luck it can be done. On the re-install, run a tap through the nuts and use never-seeze grease on the NEW bolts. -

If the cable had snapped the clutch pedal wouldn't return after you stomp it to the floor. I still think the cable is out of adjustment. -

Or badly out of adjustment. -
Found at wrecking yard
edrach replied to 2F1R Suby/dub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You should have pulled the LSD; they sell for $150 here on the board and 2 to 3 times that if you can sell it to a Datsun owner. -
Welcome to the board. Tip off on the 2WD is the 5 speed transmission (and lack of a rear differential); Subaru never made a 4WD drive 5 speed for the early EA81 cars. However, a number of members with a 4WD car have managed to install the later 5 speed transmission with good success. However, your 5 speed will get you better gas mileage than the 4WD model; not a bad idea with the current gas prices.

New Subaru Commercial With Brat
edrach replied to Durania's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Love it when someone else admits to watching that show. My Name is Earl is one of my guilty pleasures.....I wish I could say I only watch it for the Brat appearances. -
No, the school is a separate item and is not mandatory for the rallycross entry on Sunday.

Yea, I'm hoping my engine is good for one last event; we're putting together a replacement to get rid of the blue smoke.

Lots of fine reading here on the Rally America 'site. http://www.rally-america.com/event.Olympus.2008.php?section=live_updates Not a big surprise to see Block and Pastrana finish 1st and 2nd overall. My good friend Marc Goldfarb (east coast buddy from my previous life) finished 4th overall co-driving an EVO. Subaru took 8 places out of the top 10!

It was not a hard gate to miss; I never saw it and walked back to the crew working it to see what I had actually missed. Then I wiped out 5 cones on my second run. No help for the handicapped.
