  1. Greatly appreciated!! At 64, I still listen and hope to learn something new. I always told my son, grandson and all my mechanics to always listen to what another person says about what you are doing or attempting to do ... that age and experience are good but, even a total idiot might tell you something that you can use to benefit you .. sooner ... or later. In the automotive field, a picture can be worth well over a "thousand words". Thanks again and have a great week ......
  2. Acquired a wrecked '95 Legacy Wagon, Automatic, AWD, Low mileage and am considering "upgrading" one of my GLs. I have both a 2wd auto and a 4wd std. I am a retired/disabled import auto mechanic and have been familiar with Subaru since late '80s. My base knowledge and experience has been early Chevies and air cooled VWs (30+ years). However, other than a 2.2 into a VW bug, most of my mods have been basic add-ons with the Subaru. I am interested in just what from the '95 can be transfered to the '88, wothout major modifications. I am also a certified welder and do body restoration, as I can. The durability of the Subaru and the amount of negligence and abuse one will take simply amazes me. Any ideas, suggestions, or sites I could visit?? I am also interested in the normal cruising speed and RPM of the 2.2 and 2.5, for longevity. Thanks and keep on keeping on..............
  3. 4 days and no answer? I'm always interested in what someone else finds, especially when I've had the same/similar problems. New here myself and I found answers I've tried to find for years. I have a back yard full of mid-late '80s DL & GLs with tranny problems ... lost high in drive but would pull off in low and shift to drive 2 with no problem. I have started pulling the governors on the trannies that are out and found them to "all" be "apple-cored". IF one only knows where to look, he can save a lot of wasted time and money. From experience, I knew the answer had to be simple and we tend to overlook the simple things, right in the beginning. THIS is why the "speedo" working/not working is important. IF the "speedo" is working ... it shows that the tranny is working, it just isn't being transmitted to the wheels. Given that the wheels are free to rotate and the "speedo" is turning, with it in gear and at a high idle, place it in Drive 2. IF neither wheel is moving but, they will easily move by hand ... from under the car, check both axles for rotation. No Rotation? Hold the palm of your hand, lightly, on the underside of each inner joint, at the same time. You are feeling to see if there is any apparent movement inside the differential and, if so, which side is more sensative than the other. You can also get a cheap stethiscope at Auto Zone, etc. and "listen" to different areas around the differential. Believe me, crazy things happen to cars, just ask any mechanic. Also, drain the differential oil and see if it has a shiney metallic look. In '84, I had a customer's Audi that ended up having an inner CV Joint that split in to, from a hair line crack adjacent to the splined section. Once ... in over 40+ years of turning wrenchs and owning a shop. Just because nobody's seen it, doesn't mean it won't/can't happen. Excuse the length and good luck.
  4. Free at last, free at last,..... I have a yard full of '85-'89 GLs and DLs but have now found time to work on the Justy. However, it seems that, over the last 8 years, my shop manual has gotten misplaced. I did, however, find the factory water pump kit that I had gotten 8 years ago. Is there an online supplier that has such maintenance information on this particular car available? The '88 "J" shows up nowhere in any of my automotive material. I'm 62, with over 40 years of automotive experience under my belt but, I don't like to start anything w/o some reference material. Any help greatly appreciated, Jim
