  1. Oh yes.....I have a locking gas cap. It helps keep the experiment under controled conditions, because If my buddy at work tries this it really would be all too tempting for me to sneek an extra gallon of gas in his truck each night...Hee Hee. I'll even spring for high octane premium. My MPG experiments are on hold for right now since the Brat is down for repair. Yes, adding the acetone has caused my transmission to lock up in third gear, Ha! This is the second 4sp in the Brat that has had 3rd gear problems, so I'm looking around for a decent 4WD 5speed, and do the conversion that is mentioned on this forum.
  2. Thank you! I found the path. I have also been in touch with Jerry, and will most likely order his kit, if I can find a good transmission for this swap.
  3. My Brat has an 1.8L E81 engine that has been completely rebuilt and has about 30k on it. I have a Weber carb, so no injectors to clean out here. I first thought the people that said it worked for them just had old dirty engines and the acetone cleaned them out and made them run better. When I stop using the acetone the MPG goes back down. I put about 4-5 ounces in a full tank. I did not change my driving habits. Here I was trying to disprove this and it worked.
  4. OK I read this post quite a while ago, and decided then that adding the acetone was bogus, and wouldn't work. Then a fellow co-worker brought up the topic. I was so anxiuos to debunk this and prove to him that it wouldn't work that despite my better judgement I tried it anyway. Much to my surprise, I got an 11% increase in gas mileage. I have experienced no detrimental effects, and my EA81 engine is still running fine. Oh well....I stand corrected.
  5. Hello everyone, I know I've seen some posts here about swapping a dual range 4WD 4 spd for a 4WD 5spd and those that did were happy with the conversion. I'm on my second 4WD 4 spd transmission here so if the 5sp is better I might as well go for it. What exactly do I need? I have an 85 brat with the dual range 4WD 4 spd, what model and year of donar car should I be looking for. Thanks! - Bill
  6. This question is for anyone who know's....How do you get the front main transmission seal out to replace it on a 1985 Subaru Brat 4WD. I swapped out the old transmission with another used one. I wanted to put new seals in the transmission I was putting in. Forgive me if I missed something in the Chiltons or Hynes manuals, but I didn't see any details on that. I thought it would be easy....I removed 3 or 4 bolts from a plate that is around the front spline and figured it would slip right off and the seal would be behind that, but I couldn't get that plate off, something was still hold it on. In my transmission swap I ultimately skipped replacing the front seal, and replaced the others that I could, and luckily (so far) it is leak free. I would still like to know how to do this in case I need to replace it in the future. Thanks!
  7. Mine too....it has developed a vibration that sounds like it might be coming from somewhere in the rear......so I had the same thought.....get someone to look at it for cheap. I'm going to take it to the firestone dealer where I bought the tires, and ask him if he can check out the tires to see if there's something wrong with them. If it's not the tires maybe he will offer a suggestion. I've jacked it up myself and checked a couple of times now, but found nothing so far.
  8. O.K. I got the correct A/C condenser for my 1985 BRAT from the dealer and the part number on the box is SOA-203-530. It looks like it's built ALOT better than the old one that was on there. He confirmed what you said about the A/C systems being dealer installed. Actually what he said was "they were installed at Port", meaning when they arrived off the boat in the U.S.A. According to him, when he searched on his computer for the availability there were only four of these A/C condensers in the whole country.
  9. Hello all. I am trying to find the correct A/C condenser for my 1985 Brat. I didn't think it was going to be so difficult, but it's turning out to be. I ordered one from one of those auto parts places online. There were several part numbers to choose from, so the guy finally asked me for my VIN number in order to identify the right one, but I had to send it back because it was the wrong one. Then I figured I would just call the Subaru dealer, even if was twice the price, then at least I would be getting the right part. They seemed very unsure also. They said it could be a Hitachi, Panasonic, or Wynns. Anyone have any idea on this one? Thanks!
  10. I have the same noise and only at idle, but I know what it is, I was just looking to see if anyone had any hints or tips of what to do to fix it. The squeak is coming from my Air Suction Valve. It's part of the Emissions and it uses the vacuum created by the exhaust to allow fresh air to be sucked through the air cleaner and into the exhaust to help burn HC and CO. I'm not sure if you have this on your yr./model but I thought it might be worth mentioning...and like yours it's running fine and the noise is more of an annoyance than anything else. I guess I'll delve into it when I get time. - Bill (mesa,az)
