  1. 5 speed dual range conversion mostly. And, for a while I was thinking of the EJ22.. but now I'm thinking more EA81 SPFI. I still want to put a diesel in there too... but have been havng a hard time getting my hands on the one I want (only sold in europe)... Z
  2. Well... cause eventually it's going to be all green with rally stripes on the hood. But, I had never used a paint gun before when I did that... so I was learning. :-\
  3. Yeah... 36mm. I had to buy one special. A 24" adjustable wrench can work sometimes too (if it's stuck really tight... soak with pentrating oil, then stick the hydraulic jack under the other end of the wrench and slowly jack it up.... yes, I've done that...) Too bad you weren't driving a duece and a half.
  4. I just got rid of the blue wagon (as of like 15 minutes ago). A friend of mine was looking for a smaller car to run around in (currently has choice of an 80's 1 ton chevy pickup, or a new dodge cummins 3500 with a 3 or 4 yard dump bed -- both get around 12mpg. Or a MG convertible, which isn't so nice in the winter...). And I was looking for a snowplow for a truck (which I'm going to modify and put on the back of my tractor). Which he has sitting around gathering leaves and dirt (he's got a skidsteer with a snowblower now). So... we traded
  5. Yeah.... I put them on the wrong sides Didn't remember to check that till the last tire.... well, I've got plenty of time to switch them again before I get the engine in there
  6. Sorry... forgot to upload the pics to my server Should work now. Z
  7. I put the pugs on the 4x4 wagon, and the white wagon wheels from the 4x4 wagon onto the 2wd wagon. I think they both look better than before Now, just have to get them running -- no engine in the 4x4 one (it's on the workbench...), and the 2wd needs exhuast gaskets pretty bad -- sounds like an old john deere tractor. Sorry for the lousy lighting for the pics.... Can anyone spot the problem with the tires on the 4x4 wagon? Yeah... I know.. I kind of need to finish repainting it too
  8. Too late... the 08 model year did it.... at least for Imps and Foresters, and the Tribeca... that's just odd. Yes, my Justy's odd too.... In general, my car fleet is tending more towards older cars as I get more money. In college, it was 80's subies because they were cheap (to buy and run) and 4wd. But now that I can spend more than 3 figures if I want, I'm generally picking older stuff that's in good shape. Yes, the Justy is a '91, but I'm selling my '89GL and getting the '82 running again, and lifted and such. I'm thinking of getting rid of someother other newer stuff sitting around, and getting a '68 Landrover 109 station wagon.
  9. Off topic hijack... I have one of those. With the diesel engine. No rust, major dents, or even oxidized paint. Looks great. Unfortuneatly, the engine burns as much oil as fuel, and I don't have a title for it... Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming...
  10. I had a 1984 wagon that developed bad oil leak up front -- it was something to do with the oil pump. I sold it for $100, and the new owner put a new oil pump in. Saw it about 2 years later, driving up the canyon in front of me -- so that must have fixed it (or, the next owner put a new engine in )
  11. IF, that 328lb boar was being hauled home in the back of the Brat... probably okay. Without a subaru in the picture... probably a bit off topic, eh? On the oil question... how cold does it get there? I would definitely use xxW40, xxW30 otherwise the older subies tend to burn a bit. I go with synthetic 5W50 in mine, but that's because I'm starting it at single digit temps alot. In a more benign climate, 10W40 is probably fine, or 10W40 synethic if you want to go that route. Z
  12. A friend snapped a rod in her EJ22 -- and it still ran. Hole in the top of the block, loose rod, three cylinders. But.. normally, I'd expect that to cause some problems. I'll look forward to the diagnosis. Is this in the green wagon? Z
  13. I found a variety of intercoolers on ebay for between $60 and $140 for new ones, last time I looked. Lots cheaper than I had thought they were. Didn't include piping... just a 2" or 3" inlet and outlet.... Z
  14. I'd go for the '85, and swap over the running gear from your current one. Have to move all the SPFI stuff over too. Personally, I would not go with the automatic transmission one, or the sedan -- I just don't like either of those. You could put the 5 speed in the automatic tranny one, and deal with that swap, but they you are doing a tranny swap, and a SPFI swap (or keep the carbureator intake manifold).
  15. yeah... being out here, it seems like a perfectly viable option to find a 60's or 70's vehicle and just make the engine run. There's some 40's pickups along the side of the road in town that are probably restoreable (engines are siezed, I'm sure, but bodies aren't bad). I forget that cars don't stay around for 50 years back there On the other hand, the expected lifetime of a windshield in Colorado is about 3 years.... between rocks and temperature extremes
  16. The 70's japanese 2wd pickups will get awfully close -- I used to get 26 to 27mpg in my 2wd courier. Though.... it's 2wd instead of 4wd, and also makes an EA81 subaru feel kinda fast. You also won't be able to find those on that side of the country either... rust Z
  17. Yeah.... my GMC shortbus has a cast iron transmission that I'm sure weighs 300lbs or more, even just being a 3 speed. Most transmissions that I've worked with have included bell housings... but I rarely work on american made vehicles or vehicles with more than 4 cylinders either.
  18. On my EA82, you can always hear the HLAs on cold starts. If I use 5W/50 synthetic, it only goes for about 5 seconds, then goes away, If I use goo like 10W/40 (at 5F) it may continue for a minute or more. Just because thicker oil is harder to get pumped into the HLA's and until they get pumped up, they make noise (more correctly, they don't function as lash adjusters) so the lifters click against the cam.
  19. Yes, I know that they have 4wd and the front differential included, whereas most transmissions have those separate... but, geez, it's just a little car (especially the EA81 and EA82) and it weighs a bit more than the 4 speed from my Mazda truck, or the 5 speed from my Mitsubishi truck, which, theoretically are much heavier vehicles. And that's the EA82 5 speed dual range. The EA81 dual range is even heavier yet. It feels like it's getting close to the whole EA81 engine... A different topic... I'm putting an EA82 SPFI intake and ECU/etc on my EA81, before bolting it back to the 5 speed dual range and putting it in the '82 wagon. Should I also pull the heads and port and polish them? It's sitting on a bench in the nice warm workshop, and this is going to be the easiest time of any to do that... Z
  20. The guy I bought mine from had four or five of them... I can try to dig up his info. He had been building Justy's for 20 years, but said that he didn't have time for the USMB. Funny thing is that, with a total population of about 250, Ward has four running Justy's now. Two second gen 5 doors, one second gen 3 door, and one first gen 3 door.
  21. Justy prices went through the roof here this summer when gas was $4.50/gal -- there was a dealer asking for $4,900 for a '88 4x4 with 50k miles. More normal was $1000+ for running ones. They do have a problem with engines not lasting over 100k generally -- kind of like 70's american V8's... They aren't nearly as easy to work on as the other subarus. Better mileage. Smaller. Depends on what you want....
  22. Not much out there..... I have a '91 Justy, and what little info I have on it is in the Chiltons -- which isn't much. It does have a timing belt proceedure I think. Even the dealer here has no factory manuals or anything on them.... Z
  23. I notice a definite difference in how my 2wd EA81 drives compared to the 4wd EA81. Much more peppy, quicker to accelerate, etc. It feels kind of quick, almost wherease the 4wd one feels.... like an EA81... But... its got a different transmission and car behind the engine too... so who knows where the exact difference is... Z
  24. That's called rock salt.... my friend's '98 Outback from Boston has worse rust out than my '82 wagon.
