  1. Ummmm. Maybe this is a stupid question, but doesn't one have 6 cylinders, and the other only has four? Even if you swapped caps on them, the little crank angle sensor plate would be confused because of it's pattern with 6 or 4 sectors would be wrong. Or am I missing something?
  2. Ignition coil leaking? You mean the spark is leaking to ground, or is there some sort of liquid inside of them that can get out?
  3. Hey, if you're putting in a quart every 1500 miles, then you are changing it all, slowly, every 6,750 miles right..... The synthetic I use says you can go up to 10,000 miles, but I still try to change it every 6,000 or so.
  4. Usually the combination of a 11 and 13 means there's something wrong with the distributor, or its wiring harness. I've never had it in combo with the MAF stuff though. Have you checked for loose connections to the distributor or engine wiring harness. Maybe water got in those connectors??? I don't know.
  5. Nah. The two nuts should be touching each other on the same threaded end of the cable. Perhaps you're missing the smaller jam nut.
  6. So they crushed a car that could have been resurrected to a daily driver, in favor of a american boat of a car that was probably worn out roughly 15 years ago.....
  7. I had never heard of synthetic oil causing the engine to run hotter. Anyone else hear of this? There's a few threads here on synthetic oil -- maybe I'll see if they mention this. Zeke
  8. Yeah, but you can see exactly what's going on, so you won't have this problem. There's actually two nuts -- one for adjusting it, and a smaller one to jam against the first to lock it. That's why you need the 10 and the 12mm wrench.
  9. How hard is it to just pay attention???? I own a diesel truck and my subaru, and I never have trouble remembering what fuel to put in what. Of course, I also record the miles, price, and gallons in a book every time I fuel up, and I regularly take my vehicals apart, so I actually understand how they each work. So, I guess you could call me an anal retentive engineer, and not representative of the average population....
  10. You are right, most of the ones I've seen are greenish. I was just adjusting a loyale, and it happened to be black.
  11. Yeah. I've never owned one with less than 189k on it. My current one had 189k when I bought it last year, but its up to 203k now
  12. Right underneath the spare tire, there is a black lever that goes into the top of the tranny/bellhousing with two black cables attached to it. One exits to the front, and goes over to the hill holder right under the brake master cylinder. The other exits to the rear, and goes in to the clutch pedal. If you tighten the nut on this one, it'll engage higher off the floor. Loosen the nut for engaging lower. I can't remember how you adjust pedal free play though. Zeke
  13. Sounds normal to me. Mine needs a whole quart every 1,200 miles or so (I'm also used to old 70's american V-8's that burn way more than this) At that rate, you often can't see smoke from burning it. What viscosity are you using? Usually switching to 20W50 in the EA82's will help alot if you are usually using 10W40 or 10W30. I use synthetic 15W50 or 10W40 in mine so I can still start it easily in the winter.
  14. Northern Tools and Harbor Freight each have some smaller ones. I think the smallest is 3 x 4 feet or something. Most are just frames, and you have to build either a deck or a box on them, but they might sell kits for that too. Zeke
  15. Never heard of this myself. The notorious problems I've heard about (and experienced) are constant oil leaks (keeps them from rusting...) tick of death (which can seemingly go on for 20,000 miles with little effect) head gaskets if you ever overheat them. timing belts on the EA82 (only because no one ever seems to change them until they break)
  16. Wrong way being backwards, or up in the air with the SUV on it's roof? So many people buy big 4wd's, but then keep balding summer tires on them. what are they thinking:rolleyes:
  17. Bad demographics. The H6 is targeting the crowd who wants a powerful plush SUV, not a little zippy awd wagon. This same consumer demographic tends to prefer automatics. A friend of mine bought a new OBW a year or two ago -- the salesman tried to explain to her that she wanted an automatic so she could apply her makeup while driving. She got the manual. And apparently the salesman is still alive...
  18. It's possible that the sloppy shifter is just the bushings in the lever, not internal to the tranny. I had an '84 that the shifter felt like it was in nuetral in every gear. Tranny still worked fine with no grinding or binding or anything though. Have you tried adjusting the clutch cable? If you tighten the nut down a little, it might help -- this is a common problem on these cars. My '82 had to be readjusted every month, but that was also with an old stretchy clutch cable.
  19. True enough:). To ME, it was worth more though -- the added head room helps when I use it a junk hauler, and being an '89, it has SPFI but still has dual range.... Hey, what kind of VW's do you have in your collection?? Any of the old turbodiesels?
  20. Here's some more info to throw into the mix... Old toyota landcruisers ('74) with the inline 6's sound exactly like my '61 landrover, with an inline 4, even though they have two extra cylinders. And neither sounds like most 4 cylinder engines in toyotas, hondas, etc. I'm thinking it might be due to the old L-head design maybe? I've never heard an old straight 8 run, but I suspect it would sound the same too....
  21. Rockauto.com Actually, $46.99 each, plus $30 core. Plus shipping of course. The quality is probalby not as good as oem, but I've been fairly happy with parts I've ordered from them for my Mitsubishi truck, so I decided to see how their Subaru parts are. The subaru parts place here wants $100 each for oem rebuilt axles....
  22. Check to see if all the engine and tranny mounts are tight. A long shot here, but I'm wondering if the change in torque on the engine from shifting gears is moving the engine around and causing it to feel like the wheel is moving????
  23. Don't know on the newer ones, but I've done an EA82 with it in the car -- some very tight clearances to get the valve covers off, but not too hard other than that.
