Yes CNG cars can also run on gasoline and theoretical also on propane (although injectors are slightly different) I would go for propane cause there are more systems available (like here in holland) or in germany. We can even get factory propane installations which are sold under the label Legacy Ecomatic (http://www.subaru-ecomatic.de/). I mean to get the right components its easier for propane than for cng. success with the conversion. My dad just drove 60k mile on propane in 2 years without any problems at all having service intervalls every 17.500 km. Note there is no loss in power or topspeed (and i know cause we have autobahn ).

Same as mine except the AWD. Can be either 3 options. 1. Part at gearbox failed 2. Part in dash failed 3. Cable is broken. When you will start the car after its driven without the speedo cable connected the gearbox ECU will give a failure code by flashing the POWER light for 10 times. You can read out the failure by a sequence with the gear shifter and manual button to see which vehicle speed sensor it is, but most likely its the cable. At the gearbox check if the cable is connected. In my thread on this forum you can see the pictures at the last page of what should be there at the gearbox. Its possible that the lower part which actually is driven by the gearbox is worn out. Hopefully its that part and not the driver in the gearbox itself.

I had the same problem check: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=71564 Its quite simple to fix. Follow the black cable from the firewall to the gearbox/front differential Remove the cable from the gearbox and undo the clip on the outer cable Pull the inner cable out Buy (if you dont have it) graphite powder (and nothing else) and regrease the cable but putting the graphite powder on your hand palm (suggested to wear latex gloves) and pull the cable through the hand when its folded (making a fist). Do this couple of times and try not to touch the cable with bare hands. Put some graphite powder in the outercable at the gearbox and insert the inner cable again (you can put vaseline or other acid free thick lubricant on the side which goes in the dash) Put one drop of sewing machine oil (or whatever is thin and non-aggresive, meaning sulphur free) on the end befor applying the clip/holder again. Re-insert in gearbox and very carefully tight the bolt and not too tight !! do not forget to also put some graphite powder on all steel-to-steel moving parts like the holder and the gearbox bolt!! Enjoy the silent of driving again and wingmirror nois (Note: i have put some pics in the stated thread or in my album about this)

As Dutchman i should be very proud on the CVT which was invented by DAF trucks here in holland. The idea was to make a new transmission which could handle all the load and would use the egines maximum torque at the right moment. Ferrari tested the CVT for use in the F1 cars but after 1 race the idea got disqualified by the FIA. Actually the quality of gearboxes are developed in automotorsport. Imagine DSG (direct sequential gearbox) was never inveted for a VW lupo/polo/golf (small ones). Subaru still thinks CVT is good, me too, i have driven it and its really nice. Very strange because at the momement you floor the pedal it goes imediately to 5500 to 6000 rmp but speed is later. There is no feeling between rpm's and car speed anymore. Subaru is busy developing a CVT for use in the legacy ect. i can only imagine that it will be in combination with a hybrid egine (like all hybrids from toyota have). Als well a e-CVT has preprogrammed positions, called 'gears' but this would not be necessary its made to give people a more 'gearbox control' feeling. The nice thing of CVT is that you can drive as fast as forward as in reverse . And yes i have the autobahn at 15 minutes away from my houses and nothing is nicer to floor the pedal on the onramp and let it go at 200 km/h:grin: (or topspeed). Just sometimes fuel consumption is not an issue. OMG that boxer sound is so nice. (untill now done with, 91 legacy 2.0, 05 OBW 2.5, 06 legacy B6 3.0) (ah the WRX STI impreza is still on the wishlist:) )

Not to sure about manuals being better on the highway long runs. I noticed during my holiday in the baltic region of Europ i drove long distances at 90 km/h at this speed the lock-clutch is locked and consumption is like a manual only the final gear ratio is slightly worse. With my '91 legacy i even managed to drive 415 km on 33 litres only (dunno the quick convertion to mpg but ~30.5 mpg) ok this was only once of the 4500 km holiday. But average was ~28 mpg (98 octane) over this distance of which 2500 on very bad dirt roads. I think 28 mpg is very good for an old car especially an automatic.

In general its know that a automatic transmission uses more fuel than a manual. But looking at the specs of the Dutch subarus, shows otherwise. The impreza and legacy using the 2.0R have a lower consumption with the automatic than with the manual gearbox. Only the 1.5R its otherway around. The 3.0 is a huge difference (up to 4 litres per 100 km) in advantage of the automatic. So the excuse to take an manual is better for consumption is not true (of course it all depends on the way of driving as well.) note: the numbers are for, city, outside and mixed

Hey Nipper judging from your spelling pedestrians are really rare there, apparently not commonly used in newspapers when some were ran over . No worries mine is also far from perfect. Yes there are new safety rules comming to market over Here. Dunno about there but all subarus from 04 have special windscreen wipers (no not to wipe the blood away:grin: ) which break off and bonnet comes up to catch up the pedestrian just hit. This makes their being hit by a car little more comfortable (how much that ever can be).

The knock sensor is a piezoelectric microphone placed on the engine to measure engine knocking (pinging). I actually measures early detonation of the explosion mixture in the chambers. It was designed for using low-octane fuel in high performance engines by SAAB (turbo in 1982). The system was named APC or automatic performance control. On turbo's the wastegate is opened if knocking is detected lowering the turbo presure. On normal aspirated i think it changes firing point some. However i would suspect the system works in collaberation with the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Lowering the MPG but reducing knocking. My question is, why does my European 91 legacy does not have a knocksensor. (or at least not on the location where i expect it, underneath the throttle body). Is this because 92 octane is already hard to get. Usually i drive 95 and only 98 when its cheap to get. I have never heard any pinging in this engine. (i would like to make a thread with good information about the knock sensor cause it often is asked. So images and ideas about location are welcome)

I was thinking the same. Want to put my GPS on there and a small coolbox (75W). I thought it holds a 10A fuse so that around 6.25A for the coolbox and 2.4A for the GPS (at max output). Is it not bad to continiuous have about 8 to 9 amp load on the wiring? I also have a penlite charter but that takes 5A so either GPS + charger or GPS + coolbox i guess.

Had to go for a drive to relatives yesterday (to change brake pads and some other minor things to the sub). I checked oil and added a little bit since i am planning on changing it in a few days. After driving 150 miles and arrived a my destination opened the hood to undo the brakefluid container i was missing something Big an Yellow. Apperently i drove the whole way without the cap. Luckily it was nice warm weather with no rain and no dust. Not too much oil was spilled in the egine bay just some droplets. Is it really bad to drive without the cap, it seems like there is an overpresure from the pipe when i covered it with some plastic for the road back.

What is it with this 3 piece timing chain, just looks like a double chain. AND WHY does subaru not sell these engines in europe. No 2.5turbo for outback only normal. And more combinations i have seen over there are not here. Ok ok we should get the diesel first though . (still silently wishing could get an outback sport over here, but seems that will have to be done manually with forester struts, but again no junk yards with subies over here. They are taken apart and the componets are sold for near retail price )

Yes i have Glass E4 light units and metal reflectors. But i dont want to modify too much. I already have 2x 100w (hella) fog lights completely relayed and heavy wired. I have seen people cleaning their headlights with toothpaste because they become yellowish. I have never seen that over here. Is it because the european light units are different or different weather?
