  1. so, back to the stalling out. Does the car have an aftermarket alarm system installed possibly? that has been known to cause random stall outs when they fail. What kind of tires did he get on it? let me know how they do in the snow.
  2. Jus because i am very opinionated, doesnt mean it should p o peoples. Anyhow, here is my view of Caprice enjoy Just get whatever is in good shape and needs no work at a good price. I don't think Iowa is the bestest of places to look for this old of car. rusty and hard to work on due to rusted bolts. The Newton junkyard has hundreds, possibly thousands of older GM cars, lines up and down for as far as you can see, so parts will be easy to find. I can guess why there are so many of those in the junkyard, same with plymouths, tempos, ltds, etc. the cars people keep on the road longest are not GM, Ford, etc. In real world experiences, Foreign cars last longer and run for more miles. I hope you stick with Subaru, or Honda, or Toyota if venture to the dark side. These cars are more built in the USA, in US factories, as well. When people say they buy Ford because its a American company, and then have them try to find on it where its made in the USA. My Subaru has a sticker on it right on the side window, proudly showing its made in the USA. Ford, made in Mexico sticker, or Canada etc. My opinions, are sometimes incorrect.
  3. must drain antifreeze first, put this in, fill remaining with plain water, drive around a few days always with heat set to hottest to cuirculate it max. with this in there, reverse hoses to core at some point. the reverse again. FOLLOW ALL instructions. Since its water with this, make sure the car is not in below freezing temps ever.. with this in there. Drain radiator of the flush. Refill with proper coolant.
  4. damn it, you got the silver one for 500 didnt you lucky you. Crap, now i dont have a plan.....for what to do this weekend. was about to call the seller and go buy it..... I doubt the HG is blown reallly on this....... I have spare ej22t you are lucky car... and, welcome to site Tommy, ho ho ho. put some pics up, i will give you 600 for it you make 100 buck profit before you even pick it up.. lol jk....darn i am too late again.
  5. yeah i cant wait for a subaru drivetrain in a honda. oil changes, gas, thats it, for over 225k miles. I cannot go without AWD now i have tasted it, my driveway won't work with fwd only. Plus the safety factor of how Subaru is far superior in crash testing, all the way back to the ea81 cars, subaru is a much safer safety cage structure than Honda, GM, isuzu, etc.. I have never had an accident ( i am 35) its the safety to protect me from the normal people who crash a car every 3 or 4 years......I live around them, work with them, save me from being killed in a crash by them...I know my driving skills are superior in comparison, so give me the car to protect me safely, and Subaru is the car. Plymouth 1 or 2 star. Gm= 3 star.... Subaru, 5 star, and believe me, the old subaru's are where they got the structure of current cars from, they are tanks, yours, etc. Most other cars, not safe in comparison. Caprice, maybe 1 star at best... Ho HO Ho.
  6. this is about the best deal going in this part of the country http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/1521893233.html
  7. exactly spot on. Gen1 (90-94 is the best years) I have had a handful of them and by far they were the best...... if i only had my 94 turbo wagon back.....or the 92SS, or the 93 SS, etc.........
  8. *****the place you need to check is in the rear wheels where the strut perch comes really close to even the factory sized tire.....*****
  9. first up is the MUST do, get 4 matched tires on this ASAP.....if its not too late. 16" tires are not cheap. too bad it didnt come with decent tires, that alone can run about 600 bucks for those tires new. the coolant smell, not gonna make any guesses....hopefully its not the HG already, but without records of that, yeah its overdue and you are on borrowed time until they go. dash ventilation lights, they like to do that, its either a poor connection (fist bang near the surround of the lights can bump them back on) or else burned out bulbs are easy to replace once you pull all the screws that hold it in. As long as its solid i think you will enjoy this. headlights fogged and yellowed, dulled: Mequiars Scratch X found at Oreillys....do 2 applications, follow instructions, use newspaper to mask off the bumper and open hood to avoid paint contact.. Someone said toothpaste may work. Then wax after you have got them to clear enough. Every 4 months, reapply the scratch X stuff the chugging, could be about 4 things: first, clean the MAF with MAF Cleaner be careful dont use anything else second, could be coolant temp sensor bad third, could be knock sensor fourth, could be headgasket (compression check will tell that one) Also, make sure you replace plugs with NGK Vpower and use subaru OEM plug wires. if the car has anything else besides oem, you MUST replace these ASAP. It could be 1 on this list, a combination of the list, or ALL on the list.
  10. yep, and rumor i heard is a few of the mid 80's BRATS were never actually sold to anyone and sit in Warehouse store room of the Dealerships' owner and I am trying to make one become mine Going to find out shortly if he will sell an unsold BRAT to me.
  11. premium. takes more than just one tank to get accurate results. the ecu must relearn and this also takes several 2 or 3 tanks of same octane in a row to get you a accurate reading.
  12. How is the best way to blow a 30amp newer mini spade type fuse? I want to make the ABS light stay on with the fuse in place i am thinking jumper cable neg to one spade and jumper cable positive to the other spade, and boom, does that seem right.
  13. steel rim or alum? If steel, yes, can be bent back. If aluminum, it is very iffy, aluminum is soft and bends easily, and cracks easily just the same. Please post more info.
  14. note for future everyone, check under car for bolts missing in action. doh.
  15. for those of you who drive thru iowa in the winter, just on a cross country trip, your car will have holes in it.....soon. we use tons of high speed rustout salt.
  16. ok, this perhaps....i still am looking for one....to put the ej22t in ^didnt know they had laptops back then
  17. if you mean 85-94, then the 89 hatchback with Dual Range 4wd and EA81 is the superior.
  18. Farmington is such a cool town. Been there a few times. Jemez Mountains near. Fun times in those ho t springs. brent
  19. an extra pulley to turn take even more HP from the small HP we have from the Subaru factory. Just have a pro alternator rebuild shop custom rewind the stock alternator....for more amps.....do it and you will be happy. for less.
  20. Nokian is the only manufacturer I know of that sells a snow tire for 4 season use.. http://www.nokiantires.com/ specifically the WRG series. too bad only about 10 suppliers in our whole state that sells them.
  21. The 05-09 struts are much softer, and will not work well. And, in 2010, the whole shebang setup is redesigned, so you are looking at much work to do this. Actually, people are starting to look at putting the 00-04 struts on the backs of the 05-09 to prevent "ghostwalking"
  22. There is a reason a lot of LegacyGT Turbo, Outback Xt turbo, etc are for sale for less than kbb right now, all at say about 60k miles.... I wish you the good repair results. And, I doubt it was lack of oil changes or doubt it was lack of letting engine run at cool off. It was a design flaw, in the banjo bolt filter clogging, there are tons of people on LegacyGt.com with this problem........
