  1. I made it back with it just about 15 minutes ago. Took about 2 hours to get the thing to run with my Brat distributor. Ran the battery down after much cranking, decided to rotate the rotor blad at increments of 90 each time. jumpstarted. nothing. took a couple plugs out to see, just black, not soaked. decided maby i had the plug wires on wrong on the cap. finally tried about every combo, and it ran. ran like poo, but i took off on the interstate. it died at every intersection before the interstate. I filled up with gas, and then upon entering the interstate, it was running really like poo. max speed was about 40 and it was runnning almost in the red on temp, i had to pull off the first exit. it died. finally got it started, pulled into a travel center, messed with the timing, and bam, ran pretty good. checked coolant level again, was okay, messed with fan connections and it popped on. got back on road and well, it was a 25-40mph wind and i was headed straight into the wind. tried to draft behind semis as much as possible. anyhow, averaged about 50 to 55mph on I-80 runnning straight into what the weather service said was a high wind warning. not good for a ea81 car its home. whew. good times. 4hour drive there, 2 hours to get it running and 4 hours drive back home i am whooped but it is well worth my effort and it is saved i am going to call it the beast.
  2. I will be on my way at 9:30AM. heading out to the garage to pull my Brat distr after i finish this coffee. should get there about 12:30 hope it will make it back home. wish me luck in getting it back.
  3. please put a real working temp guage in the car, not some temp on the spot thing from wal mart. put a real time temp guage so you can see temps at idle, at load, up hill etc. you are wasting most peoples time if you do not do this. serious. please do this first thing before any other moves. this is not a joke connie, you need a all the time working temp guage on these older cars. you do not have this.
  4. that is my plan. thanks for confirm the distr being same. the person on the phone just was really bummed and I will go rescue it and put it on the road for my hauler.
  5. I will make attempt on this. i bet my wagon would pull it back here no probs. edit at least its this side of chicago. I don't have o be back to work til Friday, i got the time. will the Distributor in my Brat be the same? thats too far to pull it. edit again. I called and spoke with him. Is the distributor in a 85 Brat same as a 83 wagon?
  6. you need to wire up a real temp guage and put it on a Guage pod in the dash, NEED to do this first Connie. If you don't do this, you might fry every single motor you put in there. That Digi dash must eventually must go too. I think for less than 20 bucks you can get the temp guage and sender. Its not worth putting a penny more into that car, or engine until you get a reliable temp reading, so you know if its getting hot or not, even if you get the fans going, you need to know the temps. Get the temp guage to the very top of your list, you are just wasting money if not.
  7. inside is amazing. wow. and it has the rare AC. how many of these are around anymore, in any state? you were 1 day ahead of me sir mick
  8. nice 78 Front MudFlaps:banana: looks to be a good barn find. rare car for Iowa, and it goes to a good guy. Whats your boy say to it.
  9. anyone use RTV Ultra-Grey for the oil pans on ea81? thats what we use on the ej22's
  10. yep, don't lose it after you use a punch to drive it out.
  11. this could be classic sign of alternator failure shortly.
  12. in 85 the valvetrain changed . clutch clamp force supposedly higher on 85+
  13. 1/4" Drive Deep External Torx® Socket E-10 Item #: 00992085000 from sears
  14. does the exhaust have to come loose via drop the tranny method? I really think i would rather jack the car up high on jackstands, and do this via dropping the tranny. unhook axles, remove speedo thread, undo driveshaft, remove tranny with the transmission jack. Engine out method involves draining coolant, undoing all vacuum lines, gas lines, AC stuff, electrical, exhaust, etc. I think it will be quicker to drop the tranny.
  15. Its in my garage defrosted. I loosened up the clutch adjustment yesterday, and it was able to grip about 4000 rpm, so i got in in the garage, had a little trouble getting over the drift near the garage door, that was it for the clutch. thats all she wrote. Brat will sit there for now. Is it easier to just drop the tranny out to change the clutch? I think with the lift kit, since the tranny is already down low, it would be easiest to drop it down than to pull the motor. My dad has a transmission jack also so i can borrow it. now will be the time to install the front seals on the tranny i bought last summer. subiemech85.......is your inbox cleaned out yet.
  16. A-1 imports, Homestead Iowa over by Iowa City/Amana they had quite a few peugeot cars, 6 or 7 or so, lots of steelies, but they were crushing the cars by the dozens last time in Fall. they had like 15 subarus, all looked that they were driven in. If you want to go, get ahold of them first and make sure someone is around. I would tag along if you arrange this. bh
  17. I saved the old ball joints that came off my 85 Brat and they should be the same. I could send one out to you priority mail in the morning, i can't get home to it before the PO closes today. It would at least get you home, but then you should replace it with new. PM if you want that. It would arrive possibly Friday, Sat, or Monday to you-where are you. or get new at rockauto.com and get expedited shipping which will be pricey.
  18. i might go see the cost on them today at lunch at Theisens. get the price, then see if i can find it cheaper online. I think i should defrost the BRAT soon. and maybe even get to the clutch if i can get it warm in the garage. will keep everyone posted. I have paid time off from work wednesday the 24 thru Jan 2 so i have the time.......
  19. maybe a new ball joint is all that is needed to put it back together.
  20. make sure there is no fuse in the 4wd fuse holder. it is not supposed to have a fuse. be clear on that. on the 91-94 legacy's the fuse holder is up near the firewall, nearer the passenger side, back by the intake tubing.
