  1. be safe using a come-along. mine snapped and the heavy metal hook end came back and whacked my knee. ouch. that was when i decided to try to get it another day. Is the car on its side or upside down? Blown motor? Or is it still running and driving, just in a steep ravine? Good Luck. Post up here and other boards, surely some people will go help you get your car. Give some details so someone may be more likely to go help. make a plan, take as much tow straps and recovery devices you can, shovels, chains, come-alongs, more than a few, one to pull the car, one to ease the tension and hold it. clevice pins, etc.
  2. Thought I would start this thread so we can accumulate the problems we have experienced due to the bitter cold, all in one thread. like, accidents, no heat, wheels falling off etc. Hope this is okay to start a thread like this. my problem: Got Brat stuck in a snow bank, and burned the clutch up trying to get out.
  3. good luck thats pretty bad. Try to source a junkyard to get same ERA entire shock with mount, all the way down to the lower suspension arm, hub, brake, ball joint, axle, etc all in one big hunk. Get yours up on jackstands. Unbolt the shock, , remove the lower suspension arm, clamp off the brake line. Put used parts back on and see if it will drive out. that is a lot of work, but may get you back if you can get those parts as a unit. your tie rods may be hosed too, but worth a shot. someone here may have the parts.
  4. http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/exedyclutchkits-subaru.html guess they don't make a clutch kit for the 4WD Brat, but they make one for the 2wheel drive Brat and 2wd Brat turbo Anyhow, SubieMech85, pm on its way......err was on its way, clean out your inbox
  5. all i have is a small space heater, 2 of them. with the temps the way they are, that would never get it above freezing in there.......i dunno, but you are right i should get it thawed and dried asap. tuesday high may get to 28...that might be the first chance. then 19 then 22 then maybe friday 41 and rain yay... btw my garage has a floor drain so it can thaw and drain away the snow
  6. and, its in my drive now, had someone pull me down the road to home. I opened the hood, couldnt even see the spare tire in there. or the motor, just the top of the air cleaner. snowsoob.
  7. its due to the "winter" blend gas, and the fact they are mixing more ethanol in all the fuels.... ethanol is bad stuff i say. And now, almost all gas is mixed with the crap...due to regulation.
  8. maybe pb blaster on a rag.......???? research this method first, its something i thought of and not sure if that would be bad or good.
  9. its down north of me by the cemetary. The road grader made it around and thru, so now i just need to go home for lunch and have a neighor tow it back to my drive (which is another snowy drifted mess) but once it gets to the drive, its sloped enough i can pull it with the sedan to its rest spot.
  10. well tonight the temp is supposed to be -16 F actual -31 F windchill coldest since 1990 i guess yay for a warm -1 F tomorrow high
  11. i will hit you up after we get thru the xmas holidays.
  12. i will give that a try, what wrench size needed to loosen? turn the adjustment bolt out counterclockwise? 121,000 original clutch. the smell of it burning, ick.
  13. we could not have pulled it thru the drift from behind and there were even more drifts the other way. if i had its own power it would have done it. didnt want to rip up the tow hooks or get it stuck again in another drift pulling thru
  14. its out of the drift, tow rope pulled it ahead via the big white truck, after he got unstuck. went like this. Red truck comes to get the white truck out, from ahead of my Brat / behind the white truck. Red truck gets stuck down the road before even gets to where the Brat/white truck is. red truck really screwed. so we dig dig dig the white truck out. then he goes back to get the Red truck out. yank on it pretty good with the tow ropes i had. Red truck out, white truck out, then we pull mine to a clearing on the road where the wind has not drifted. Thats where Brat sits, on the clearing in between some really bad drifts. just called the plow driver to tell him i am not sitting in a drift and he can plow the road in the AM around me. then I can pull the Brat home for it to sit til spring for a clutch kit, or first warm day, my garage not heated so i need warmth to do a clutch.. met 2 great guys who i helped and then they helped me. gave them 20 bucks. guess they would have towed in order to get thru the road, so i really did need to get it out of drift.
  15. appreciate that offer of help alot DudeAbides, and if it wasn't so far from you i would say yeah. there will be people in town around and about tomorrow, that will hopefully be willing to helpout. everyone is staying in today, as is what i should have done yesterday afternoon to prevent this. next time i want to go do something like this i will make certain someone else is around, and have them join. It will be quite some time before I can replace the clutch, too cold and no heat in garage. First tho, I need to get my Brat back home.
  16. clutch is out 100%. doh i think i should wait til tomorrow and grab someone from town with a tractor or something. btw its 55 miles or so from you i am a 1/2 mile off I-80 exit on highway 63 exit
  17. its a lot of snow to pull it back thru. not sure I have a tough enough car to pull it thru it. A tractor would be sweet. Any risk of the tow hook on the BRAT frame pulling loose? I suppose i could try to pull it with my wagon (keep it in low or d2) i sure don't want to burn another clutch out so that is why probably wouldnt use the white leg to pull it. they wont be calling a tow truck or anything. in fact the plow driver left me a message since i called to notify him. said they probably wouldnt go on the backroads til Monday. Really though, if i had a tractor, i am sure it would be out.
  18. i just drove 10 miles insterstate to buy another tow rope 20ft 8500lbs there were 6 cars in the ditch along interstate from probably last night. i dont know what to do? wait til they plow the other end of the road?

  20. not looking so promising. the plow truck has not done anything more. snow blowing more now again than it was earlier in the day.
  21. if i can pull it down to where they cleared the road, then maybe someone will be around to help steer the Brat... not many people are going to brave the blizzard for my stupidness. But since there is another truck stuck there now, maybe someone in town will help.
