  1. A fact is the ej25 DOHC engine had almost near 100% failure of the headgasket. iteration version one thru how ever many changes they have made. Even the newst design is prone to fail at 100k. Now, the ej22, did not bave a fact issue at all, ever on that. Take your chance, read up, be saving money for when you have a ej25 DOHC blow.
  2. sweet. for me its cheaper to buy a 90-95 legacy ej22 and not have to pay 2g in headgasket known flaw, feature. I suggest more people do this. seeing more and more 05-09 headgasket failures as miles approcah the 100k mark. Never had a 2oo k ej22 let one go, not even past 200k
  3. I absolutely HATE despise Ethanol. I have had it ruin too many engines in my friend/family network. no joke. It kills them off sooner than later. Look where i am from. It is the worst choice we could do, the industry pushes it due to it increases amount of fuel usage total.... IE get this. 28mpg on non ehtanol gas 24 mpg on 10% ethanol 20.6 mpg on 15% ethanol. You have less power, it pollutes more out the tailpipe, and it uses up WATER resources to make the crap. People will also see food prices soar due to ethanol bills. Corn flakes will cost triple, soda pop (i know i don't touch that stuff) will increase by double price. Your everyday grocery bill will increase if they push this junk. My old SVX owners mnual said strictly do not use ethanol in that high performance engine. I wish i could kill the ethanol bill and those on board. Even NASCAR is going to it and admitting in public it has caused their gas milage mathematics to go haywire. IT IS BAD BAD BAD> this was a NICE site when i went to OKC for a trip last year. Wish Wish wish wish wish they would have that here.
  4. Subaru really should offer a 2.0 option (across the car lineup), not everyone needs the power and lower mpg a 2.5 gives.....
  5. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/14/despite-fix-some-subaru-outback-and-legacy-owners-still-experience-highway-vibration/#more-93823 The 2010/11 Outback vibration issue gets some attention in the Times.
  6. Sounds typical of what i see repair shops do to Subarus around here. They don't do proper work..don't get the coolant burping is needed, etc, don't know about the proper towing of them. They might have even used the wrong marks when doing the timing belt, and if that is the case, then hopefully it didn't ruin something.
  7. radiator hose pinhole? or headgasket let go. a gallon is a lot of water to add. The system doesn't hold much more than that to begin with total capacity.
  8. I think i know that color code...now what color again. Could be grizz2.
  9. very common issue for 2000 outback is broken front swaybar on that model year type Outback. Check that first not sure it was the 99's tho.. Lots of people, i mean lots, have snapped the high spring steel end on the swaybar on the early 2000 outbacks. Otherwise, struts...
  10. Would a 360 sedan fit in the back of a Gen2 BRAT anyway possible to haul one a few hundred miles?
  11. slow blow fuse? that would be next best.. Shawn has the right idea, if a dealer is taking too long for a part, get on here, someone can USPS priority ship to you in a day or 2 at most to get you the part..IF we still had passenger pidgeons, a fuse could get to you the same day.
  12. yeah lesson is never replace a fuse with wiring or a penny, or .22shell. At least Twitch mechanism is still a fuse. Fuses are meant to blow when something shorts or goes wacko in overvoltage current draw. When you take the fuse element out, nothing there to blow so you get fire, melted wire, possibly a burned up car on the side of the road.
  13. Flat driving with increased tire air pressure, would get you about 27-28mpg avg about 55mph with using good quality gas without ethanol and a new airfilter. You are not flat driving you are in the mountains and you speed is above 55.. What type gas are you using, ethanol or neh? Synthetic oil will get you a slight increase as well. What oil type are you running? How new is your airfilter?
  14. The 97 cranks and wont start. Maybe its out of gas, a common problem is a leaking fuel filler neck due to rust out. Also, with that many miles, it cant be that solid if it lived in your area. Check up near the frame near the rear shock mounts, hidden holes in most there. A engine swap would be the best thing to plan on, but 211k miles means bearings, shocks, struts, brake work, etc in addition to just getting it running.
  15. pretty sure the good engineers at fuji maximized the early ej22 in every way. Then they had "new" engineers come on board to "get more power" and they restroked the bores, changed the compression, and introduced a "INTERFERENCE" motor. The demise/ downfall of Subaru engine longevity happened after the interference engine went mainstream. I hate Subaru of new due to this
  16. no they had the indestructable ej22. it had no problems, but then they had to make bigger heavier cars that needed more power so we got stuck with a failed ej25. many people are very happy with slapping headgaskets on the ej25 at 100k. Those people need to recognize the fact that is bad engineering, the ej22 was perfect. no piston slap no rod knock on the ej22 yet people love the ej25 and its rod knock, piston slap, burned bearing and headgaskets. i dont get it. come on Subaru.
  17. correct.. bummer subaru. oh well. plenty of ej22 to retrofit when the new subaru owners start to dump their HG car.
  18. I assume you read post on here and only went to you Subaru OEM for headgasket dealer on this. They do leak oil. about 80k is the expectancy. Nothing the same as prior year leaking coolant or exhaust into the coolant. Yes. the 2005 -2009 leak headgasket oil. this has been discussed. \ too bad the ones on here have not chimed in on this so much yet. maybe cause those cars are not yet the mileage yet. subaru 2.5 is always destined to leak a headgasket. dohc 98 era most often leaks internal, exhaust into coolant. 99+sohc leaks external, they weep coolant. even the 05+, leak oil. no ej22 had this issue. If you want a Subaru that has not had head gsket leaks, stay with 1994 and older stuff ej22. the ej25 is junk.... end of thread/
  19. went back to wrench n go today (120 miles roundtrip distance from house) to help dennis (subiemech85) pull the ea71 out of the 68k mile hatch. I bought the radiator/fan assembly. cost is as: radiator unit price 34.99 core: 7.00 env fee 1.38 radiator fan motor dual type unit price 24.99 core 2.00 env fee 1.00 so 42.87 plus 27.99 equals $70.86 add 6% sales tax... yeah used parts prices are going up big time. at least it only had 68k miles on it. plan to use it on my next ea81 vehicle that has a radiator need. going into the rafters until then.
  20. why? what a waste. keep with the original to the year panels. You are making something that is a mess otherwise. If you need gen 1 parts i can find them if you need gen 2 parts i can find them Why make a mess.
  21. yeah when you go to sell it let me know as well. Love stanley. nice.
  22. someething with the alternator or charge system failed. I had a alternator voltage regulator go bad, and a turn of the key would send the tach needle to like 3000 room without even kicking the starter on. Wipers would move around, even though the switch for them was off....
