  1. timing has skipped a tooth or more. check timing to be dead on then proceed as needed to fix it. use the right marks, you use the back tick marks, do not use arrows.
  2. I have had Honda's since 1993. The only repairs they EVER needed were: spark plugs every 25k, tires every 75k, and oil changes every 3k, and the occasional t-belt job every 70k. Oh and a cheap gas fill when you run thru 38mpg 11 gallon tank. That is my report.
  3. seats are not original. In a BRAT, you have the back glass directly near your head, Subaru deisgned taller seats to keep you from whacking your head into the back glass. see the height of the top of the seat back
  4. you still want to not drop stuff in it but it is the water system it will go in. keep the back covered good where the carb was. That is going into the engine at the back.
  5. Mine has been blocked off there due to Weber, but I am going to leave it blocked off for the back to stock carb....will see how mine goes later this week.
  6. Miles. if the car only has 137k miles on it, the stock EA81 is going to outlast the car. You can tell the car was well taken care of just by looking at the interior cleanliness and under the hood. EA81 is a lot better engine than any EA82 is. Would be totally wrong to neuter it to a ea82 in all aspects. Dennis here in Iowa has a Ski wagon just like this. I think his is a 1980 model ?
  7. from my limited knowledge, anycrud that does fall in the little front portion will go into the cooling system jackets, you would just rinse it out with the radiator hose off and the crud wouldnt end up in your radiator. The crud is not going to go into the engine if it is the front little place. I will have my weber carb off later this week on my EA81 Brat to install a stock carb instead, but it is similar I can take pic and see if it is tubing or what? I have forgot by now.
  8. most pick n pull here have signs stating only removal of bolted on parts is allowed, NO cutting off of parts.
  9. good luck. you have seen the rockers on a ea82 loyale, now you can see the ea81, not very close, have luck making them work. Is this your oldest Subaru so far?
  10. ordered 100 bucks worth of transmission seals etc for my BRAT trans today. subaru bucks being used. these same parts i could have got for 35 bucs online instead, but they had to look some up and even then i don't know if they got the right ones My dealer adds 10% to the msrp price, forget wholesale.
  11. Do NOT drill the spot welds out... reason your new rockers are going to be for a 85+Gl, and they won;t be anything near a exact match. You will have to fudge them to even make them work at all. reason= they do not make rockers for a ea81 vehicle. if you look at the sight you order, you will see this, even though you press 80-84, they have them as a loyale not a gl, kinda a screwed up system. the glovebox mirror was a 1982 and 1982 thing. I know the 1985 did not have them, but my 82 Brat and my 83 Gl did have the mirror and i read a brochure showing it was standard on the 82 and 83 then they went to a vanity mirror in the passenger flip down visor. The carb has a "light stamping" near the float bowl sight glass, to the back side from the sight glass. there is a flat area and it is there.. I mean it is very faint almost not detectable. It is a whimpy excuse for stamping. You need to scrub it up with a toothbrush and some simple green/degreaser to try and see if it is still legible at all. Do not use steel bristle or metal brush it will scratch off what is there. be careful. If you get the number it will be something like DCP-306-something a number, and the last number series is the one you will need to match on the carb kit. Write the number down and keep it with your service records. I restamped mine on another part of the carb base..
  12. think it looks to have helped. That is still pretty decent in my opinion.
  13. I don't recommend it in your oil at all. It scrubs all the oil including bearings and rings, cleaning the oil right away from where it needs be.
  14. And everytime i see a thread too EJ it, the price of a real and stock BRAT just shot up a little.
  15. cool. how soon do you gotta do the headgaskets? that looks cool. you now have a new BRAT. The Baja is the type of vehicle you can drive for a few years, and then if the time comes to sell, you can sell for more, since it is collectible status car. going to put a 5spd D/R in it?
  16. higgins 2nd overall and MConte 23rd overall. Nice job Numb's very good..... nice job to those and to the other Subaru drivers too....
  17. some people say naval jelly. I do not even know what the stuff is. anyone got info on it, what it is like etc.
  18. this weekend is the 100 acres wood rally, anyone been checking in on it. http://rally-america.com/events/2012/100AWRR/ looks like Matthew Conte is doing quite well, and Higgins too.
  19. Yes so glad it was saved and fixed. Too many people would have crushed it. Thank you for saving the BRAT.
  20. Nice. I thought GL had the halo fun roof and the center lamp on a 82 Gl. What trans does it have? Still a very nice Brat like the color and good job of fitting the replacement fender.
  21. Just think how many people back in 96 or 97 traded in their higher mileage 90-94 legacy wagons for the "new outback" they really got shortchanged in the end.
  22. I blame ethanol 100% sure hope they don't approve 15% required ethanol blend. Will drop even more mpg if that happens.
  23. there are many types of lifts. for instance my former 4" lift, used the stock mount bolts for going up into the body mount captive nuts, and used some high grade other bolts for connecting the suspension back to the bottom of the blocks. Some lift kits use stock bolts, some lift kits use long thru bolts instead. Not much more info to say than that. If i had pitch grade, length etc, i would provide it.
  24. Actaully, i would call that the deal of the month for 400. And a nice front bumper, plus gotta love the skinny pedal.
