  1. its fairly common around the rust belt that pistons seize up, its a rust thing. People in the west rarely deal with this. If the piston does not move back in freely, its best to source a different caliper...... where are you?
  2. what did you use for the topper gasket replacement, mine is no good at this point, california dried it out and now it rubs the paint to bare metal, which is now rusting badly where the topper wore the paint out.
  3. one more from me, is, I HOPE the Subaru engineers are watching our boards here, and the other Subaru sites, and finally, someday, give us long term Subaru owners what we are requesting. If they don't monitor these boards, we will just get garbage products. want: 2.0, fwd switch, small 2 door hatch that gets 40mpg.
  4. ShawnW's parents purchased my 06 outback from me this spring. It had about 90k on it. Shawn went and did the 105 maintenance and when i talked to him, he said the headgaskets on it were leaking oil. He did a full hg job on it, i would talk to him. So......the 2005 and 2006 had hg issues still.....if i am correct. 1990-1994 were good years i do know that with 100% certainty, and i say anything after 1995, all the way to 2006 maybe even 2010 is probabe for a bad hg.
  5. i am not sure when the 2011 forester comes out, i heard its release is delayed til they can build the factory that will make these new engines. Subaru, please make a 2.0 so we can get even better mpgs. Some of us dont want all that power or the high cost of a car that has a 2.5 Please make them smaller, cheaper, with a 2.0 and fwd button.
  6. you cant keep tires on the ground due to the ej torque. probably about 235 tq. a ej22t is like 245lb foot of torque at 2150 rpm stock and you are probably seeing near those figures with your mods. and a 4cylinder with that torque is impressive, not many other car makers can do that. boxer 4 for the win.
  7. oh boy, why even risk it, Subaru didn't evem get the ej25 gasket right ever to this day, so why risk a shicts.....? i suppose the new oem subaru gasket might get to 180k, but who knows.
  8. nice brat. what did you do for fender sidemarker lights? same place as a 91-94 legacy good visibility and a good safety thing. why don't they put those sidemakers on the new ones. dumb engineers i think. that was a smart thing when they did it and kudos to you to retrofit them to a brat. nice brat. pug flat spokes, what size tires are you on for them?
  9. mick, can we go wheeling somewhere this fall before it gets crappy out, i wanna beat my BRAT one last time
  10. oh, my friend says drive around on it with loose lugs.. or sledge it from the inside. i still say hmmm. takes abouts 3 months of winter salt here, and its rusted to the hub.
  11. no no no no no to kick it. you are in omaha. hello. you could break your leg kicking it off. okay, smart approach is: get another tire mounted. throw the ************er at the legacy. it will break it loose. hello to those not from the midwest.
  12. pretty sure the final drive ratios changed, so you would need the rear diff to go with the trans it was built with, unless your 92 is fwd only.
  13. go get a new oil pressure sensor they should be about 7.99 at a auto store. they are pretty sensitive and once they get bumped like to leak. just go with new.
  14. i wish manufacturers would go back to smaller tires, ride quality is so much better on a 13 or 14 than on the 17-18" low pros. i rather have smooth nice ride than handling. maybe someday they will learn a lesson with to many pothole damages wheels and suspension.
  15. i might suggest throwing the name of this repair shop out so others can avoid it in the future.
  16. the conditioner (holtz stop leak) is proven to keep headgaskets from weeping, but it clogs the heater cores up, making a cold winter vehicle in the midwest, upper north, winter cold areas. Once the heater core clogs with the fix, then you have to replace the core (if you want good heat), and that is not what i call a cheap job. It also is not good for the radiator efficiency, and I am appaled that subaru says this is the fix with all the side affects of its use. Subaru "should" man up and pay for the headgasket replacements in all the cars with bad ej25 hg's to the updated style. I am not a happy camper with this topic as of lately, and the consumer reports stuff (i would like a link to that article) is probably spot on and is there to warn people of the issue.
  17. any leads on replacement regulators? i would have spares if i had some regulators.
  18. subaru had headgasket prone failures in all after '96 ej25 engines. Subaru never ever fixed the problem, besides isssuing a Holtz brand coolant conditioner additive (leak stop that cruds up the heater core) which is not a true fix. If you have researched this, the ej22 is pretty much best engine you can get. Ej25 is the second worst engine subaru produced (after the ea82). Hopefully the 3rd gen boxer engine coming out in the 2011 forester has resolved the issues of the headgasket, and they hopefully looked into longevity of the motor versus power output, something the engineers did not do from 95+ after 95 the engineers must have been on craks and nothing more.
  19. I "know" the ea81 alternator voltage reg is internal. Are you saying the ea82 voltage reg is not internal. That would explain it to me.
  20. i have picked up about 3 or 4 pick and pull alternators with newer "rebuilt" stickers on them, looking newish. All have been bad, usually voltage regulator allows them to way way overcharge.
  21. nice 1st gen. never seen piano keys on any vehicle before thats a first.
  22. its not legal to ride in seats in the back of a 86 or 87 BRAT. The last year you can legally install and ride in them is 85, which is part of the grandfathe'd law here. look it up. before you get a ticket.
  23. you will need a "chip" key and no walmart does not have them. If you are lucky, you can buy a chip key blank for 19.99 on ebay, then go to your subaru dealer, have them cut it by looking up vin, then they will charge another 50 or 60 to program it. It will not start your car (chip is fortheft deterrant system) until it gets programmed, only the dealer can program it. Some places like ace hardware, can sometimes copy your current chip key with a reader, and transfer it to the new key, but usually they only have stuff for ford, gm, chysler. good luck total will be about 100 to get it done if you get keyblank off ebay.
