  1. I put a brand new weber on my 83 wagon and then took it for a test drive. it accelerated slower in first gear and didnt have any power at any RPM in 2nd gear. Im wondering if anyone could try to tell me what i might have screwed up when i put the carb on. I was hoping to gain power instead of losing it. Also the car wont idel until it warms up. I has the electric choke. I conected the origonal hitachi wires to the weber, but the hitachi had two extra wires that went to a triangle shaped piece that actuated some sort of plunger. I couldnt find anywhere those might attach to the weber. That is my only idea on why the idle is bad. Thanks David
  2. Thanks for all the help GD, its making me happy to almost have this car road worthy, I bought it in September and have been slowy getting it going. I need to hook up the returnspring, that should fix the that, the surging idel though is confusing though, my only guess is that it is vacume related. ill check for leaks. Other ideas though are still very helpful. Thanks for all the info it has helped me a lot David
  3. Thanks a lot i had the my fuel filter connected in correctly that was my problem. So the car starts now the the idel is surging, and the linkage seems i not return to its fully closed position. I can't find anything binding but it seems like the spring is just not pulling it closed. It also back fires every time i start it up. Also where do you pick up a lower clearence air filter because i dont have a lift (yet). Thanks David
  4. i doubt it is the coil because the car would start up with the original hitachi carb on, and i can see/smell the gas in the carb after tring to start it up, it seems though that it floods really easy, the barels in the carb have gas pooled up in the bottom after just a few cranks, i'll try the starter fluid though. Also if any one has pics of their weber hooed up, id like to look at them to make sure i every thing installed correctly. Thanks David
  5. I installed a weber on my 83 wagon today. After intalling it i tried to start it up. After a quick crank i started up and idled for about 4 sec. then it died. I tried to start it again and i wont fire up. I let it sit and tried it again. Once in a while it will pop once but thats as close as it comes to firing. Before installing the weber i put in a new fuel filter, coil, spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, so i have pretty much eliminated those from the posible culpretes. If any one has any ideas why i wont start would help a lot. Thanks David
  6. So this proves that people have passed washingtons emissions with a weber. That is good to know, last time i asked people had been told it would pass but had not gone through yet. I am looking to get a new carb and was going to get a stock one just to pass and get the weber later. But Now i know, so i will just get the weber. david
  7. Well that is good news to me, i have read over the owners manual but it was a while ago, mabey its time for another look. I think the lifter clatter is something i can live with because this is car is back up ride until i get my 83 wagon road ready. thanks David
  8. i have a 87 2wd ea82 wagon I noticed today while at a stop light while the car was warm that my oil pressure gadge read 0 psi. When i accelerate that it reads close but below 45 psi I have noticed it drop a little below 45 when idleing before but never this low. the oil level is full and it only has a small oil leak (which i dont think is rare for a subaru with 200k on it). I was wondering if it is the oil pump or mabey something else. I have also noticed that the lifters were clacking louder than normal latly. Thanks David
  9. The reason i was wanting to rebuild was because i know i have a vacume leak at the gasket between the carb and the intake manifold. I thought that if i had the carb off i might as well rebuild it. Also i was having trouble finding a new gasket to replace the old on and assumed it would be included in a rebuild kit.
  10. My carb on my 83 gl wagon is in deperate need of a rebuild. Im heading down to the junk yard and picking up another hitachi to rebuild. I am wondering where to buy a rebuild kit for this carb. I have been looking on the net and found a couple sites selling them for around $50 is that a good price. Thanks David
  11. I have a 83 4wd gl wagon. I have found things saying that i comes with the hitatchi (sp?) and the weber. How do i ID which one i have. Thanks David
  12. Thanks alot i'll pick up that thred chaser tomorrow. I was thinking that a part like that would do the trick. David
  13. I resently bought an 83 4wd wagon and i decided to replace the plugs and wires. 3 of the 4 plugs came out easily but one was pretty tight. When i went to put the new one in i hand tightend it about two revolutions and then i was tight. I knew this was all the way in and didnt want to screw up the threds so i took the plug out. On the thred of the plug thier were little metal shavings. So i came the the conclusion that the previos person who installed the plug screwed up the threds. What should i do to fix the threds so i can put in the spark plug? Thanks David
  14. I am trying to turn the piston but it doesnt seem to want to turn, is a lot of force required to turn them? Another thing is that the piston has two notches that line up with bumps on the pad. So the caliper will only go on if the pistion is in the position it is now and 180 degrees from it. Would i turn it a half or a full rotation Thanks David
  15. Thanks for the advice i was not turing it as i was pushing it back in. How do i go about turing it, by hand or with a wrench. Is the direction important?. I'll give that a try. Thanks David
  16. I replaced the front brakes on my 87 2wd auto wagon and I had a hard time compressing the piston in the caliper back on one side. I ended up opening the bleeder valve and prying it back in far enough to get the caliper over the pads. Then bleed the brakes. I have replaced the pads before and it was never this hard. Well I took it out for a drive and it was clearly apparent that the brake wasn’t releasing on that the one side. After a minute of driving the brake was smoking. If any ones know what could be causing this problem it would be great. I don’t really want to take it to a shop. Thanks David
  17. this is getting really frustrating, ive changed axles quite a few times with out problems. Thanks for the tip i'll give it a try and hope it works.
  18. i have changed axles before but this is the first time on this car. It is an 87 2wd gl. It looks like the last person who changed them bent the roll pin. I have been pounding and pounding but the roll pin will not back out. Is thier any other methods of removing the pin. Thanks david
  19. How hard is it to get a weber to pass emissions in WA. I have an 83 ea-81 wagon and it is having some serious ideling problem. I replaced all the vacume hoses and it helped a little. Still wont idle without dieing under 1500rpms. I thinking about going with the weber instead of the stock hitachi. I have to pass emission before the car is leagal to drive. I know a lot of you washington people run the webers so some one should be able to help me. Thanks David
  20. I am just checking. My 83 4wd wagon with the ea81 should have the hitachi carb on it. I am going to start look for vacume leaks, by just going through and replacing the hoses. If any one has any tips on this that would be great. Thanks david
  21. This is an 83 gl wagon with a carbed ea81. I bought the car and it ideled a little high(1500 or so) i needed to pass emissions so i went to turn the idel down. When i did that the car would die when i would let the idel below 1200rpms or so. So i turned the idel back up so that it wouldnt die. Now when ever i start the car it idels at 3000rpms and then when i warms up it dies when you are off the gas. I think the high idel when you start is some kind of choke problem. The guy i bought it from said he thought there was a vacume leak so i am going to start replacing hoses. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreicated. Thanks David
