One year ago today I bought my 83 BRAT from an ad here in the for sale forum. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66407&highlight=83+brat+gl+knoxville It was a long rainy drive out to one of the most rural areas in the state. Surprised the dude even had internet access out there along with running water. Got the thing back into Crossville and was pulling into my buddy's apartment where I had left my truck and the throttle stuck on the weber so when you started it, it was like the pedal was all the way to the floor. Took my dad and me 2 hours to figure out what was wrong with it. Here she is the day I got her: It has been the most temperamental vehicle I have ever owned. Here is the list of things Ive done to her since I bought it. Its a long one. -New 185/70R13 Tires -New wheel clips for center caps -Replaced Starter -New Alternator -New upper and lower radiator hoses -New OEM Subaru thermostat and gasket -Replaced windshield wiper motor -Replaced both t-top wind deflectors -New windshield wipers -Fixed major electrical issues under dash from ignorant previous owner -Replaced gauge cluster with one from 83 Brat with 65k -All new bulbs in gauge cluster and climate control -Replaced shifter knob with an original -New OEM Subaru clutch cable -New OEM Subaru oil drain plug and crush ring -New clutch pedal return spring -Installed original “fun roof” sticker -New heavy duty floor mats -Replaced window crank mechanisms and handles -Replaced door panels -Camper top to preserve bed -Weber carburetor -New alternator/water pump belt -New driver side CV axle -New passenger side wheel bearings. -New passenger side rear wheel bearings -New brakes front and rear -New passenger side ball joint -Re-wired front speakers from previous ignorant owner cutting them. -New rear u-joint -New heater core hoses -New throttle return spring -Original Subaru factory tool kit -Replaced rear view mirror -Replaced drivers side mirror -Replaced glove box mirror -Replaced fuel door with rust free one -Replaced fuel cap with OEM -New spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotary button. -Replaced T-Tops -Replaced Fuel Pedal -Replaced Both Seats -Replaced Entire Center Console -Obtained “Dual Range” Emblem for console -New Subaru OEM Intake Manifold Gaskets Lets hope she stays true for another 24 years.

I just bought two intake manifold gaskets from the dealer on monday, mine were like 8 dollars a piece. Its worth the investment exponentially. -

Might want to have your alternator checked out. Every Sube I have owned has had alternator issues. Run it by autozone or similar place and have them check it out. -

This is why I find it extremely difficult to read any post you make. -

I drove the 08 WRX when I was at the dealer getting gaskets for my BRAT on monday. I was thoroughly impressed and would instantly buy one. The full gaguge sweep is a nice touch and the red interior lighting makes for a good effect. Clutch was a little different feeling than the one in the 07 WRX that I drove back in January, took some getting used to.

I used the same technique for the hubcaps on my 91 Legacy. Like yours, it turned out way better than expected. -
Intake Gasket Failure (Fixed W/ Pic)

Ive not done any major work on the engine in awhile. Flushed heater core last week but thats about it. Whoever rebuilt the motor used this nasty orange looking gasket sealant stuff. I noticed something was up when the brat didn't want to go when I let out of the clutch, it just kinda chugged a bit. Also was revving alot higher than normal and was also dieseling considerably more than usual. Thanks for all the advice on this stuff guys. I read in some searches I did that it is better to take them out while the motor is still warm; is that the case? I wasn't aware till yesterday that the intake manifold had coolant in it, I assumed it just distributed the air/fuel mixture to the heads. Also, you mentioned the coolant. Do I need to drain all the coolant? Or just from the manifold? -

Got the gaskets this morning before I had class. $7.96 each part number is 14035AA150 I bought two. The parts guy said I needed to put some kind of sealant on the gaskets before I was to tighten them down. Does any of this sound right to you guys? BTW: I drove the new WRX and loved it. -
First. Welcome to the board. Best place for Subaru info on the net. Second. Good to see another member from Tennessee on here. I am not too familiar with the EA82 series cars but I figured I would extend salutations from 70 miles to your west.
-
You got that thing jacked up? Or am I use to my Brat Slant?
-
Walmart here sells it. Ran it yesterday in my brat just poured some into the carb seemed to help but I have a blown intake manifold gasket and is hard to tell with that thing.

A Reason To Come To Tennessee(BRAT Sold $5000)
Durania replied to Durania's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just got back from the dealer. They sold this Turbo BRAT for $5000. I explained that if he only wanted that, I could have gotten a loan right then and there. Also told them he could have gotten double on ebay. -

From the looks of it, it seems with a weber it will be easier to change. Would I just need to undo those 6 bolts and basically just pick the manifold up and move it back into where the spare tire rests leaving the respective lines hooked up? Of course I will need to disconnect the PCV. -

I heard a vacuum leak today when I was giving the carb a good bath. Started running my hand over the manifold until I found out where the vacuum was coming from. Talked to my dad and he said it was best not to drive it the way it is. Luckily I got a toyota for a backup vehicle. Here is a pic: -
Just discovered I have an intake manifold gasket leak on the 1 & 3 cylinder side of the manifold. Already plan on getting two gaskets from Subaru. Is there any temporary fixes I could do till I get the new gasket on next week?
-
Jerry I appreciate it. Gonna try and figure out if they're bad or not. The idiot I bought it off of said he replaced them but I am willing to bet he fouled them up like he did everything else on the car. Whats the signs they are bad? -Kyle.

How would I know if my BRAT has bad mounts? I already have motor vibration.

I like it, reminds me of legos.

What's The Diffirnence Between Gl And Dl
Durania replied to GLENN"S854x4wagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is a ton of differences out there depending on the year. Example would be how some EA82s had a 4 headlight front end (DL) and the two headlight (GL). Might consider giving this a good read: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/general/specyears.html -
+1,000,000.5 My BRAT has a completely different driving style than my hatchback did. Mine takes a few seconds of idleing to a minute to get the tranny fluid around the syncros to get the gears to mesh smoothly.

The dude that rebuilt the alternators on my brat, hatchback, and legacy all screwed them up. I was lucky to get 10K miles out of each. Not going back to him. Ive had great luck with this reman one I bought from autozone for like $60 when I spent $55 getting the other one rebuilt. Not doing that again. This is the pulley that came on my reman one from autozone. Is it the type of pulley you guys speak of?
