jono replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Looking for suppliers new EA82 mpfi TPS 4 pin (non Spider)
jono replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This https://www.efihardware.com/products/2502/TPS-Kit-Including-Bosch-TPS might solve a problem for others that may be trying to use a spider and its throttle body on a Series 2 EA82 as it works clockwise or counter clockwise !! Nope, sorry, this is a three wire job so does not have an idle position switch, nothing to say they dont have something though But not for those needing a simple TPSwitch on series one mpfi -

Actually. my device that I am going to install only needs one input of 0 to 5 Volts maybe 0.5 to 5V so any of the cheap ones available that turn the right way and have same size throttle shaft and cut away could do the job. Five bucks for a TPS !! -
See if I can find the photo

Thanks Fuji, two mounting points on mpfi TB :)
jono replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Reckon it is possible you stated the functions opposite to what they are as memory now serves me that I queried only two wires in loom connected to the self contained pins of the main TPS body. I cannot recall the three wire pigtail off this being connected so far back. I also had one on an import engine fitted to a different vehicle that was not a runner -
How is this for a theory? The three pin TPS on an 89 mpfi na ea82 with the three wire additional pigtail is actually an idle switch in the main three pin plug with only two wires from the loom The three wire/ three pin pigtail connector shares the earth of one of those two wires and the other two are 5Volts in and resulting position Voltage out So the TPS with pigtail is both idle Switch from its first series ie flapper maf and a potentiometer output for series two types of four plug ecu/ hotwire maf Looks like the true four pin TPSensors were only on Spider and spfi? Theory sound good?

1985 GL Unusual Heater and climate control issues.
jono replied to JustThatGuy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In one of my Subes of that era I bought knowing it had been diagnosed with a blown head gasket. Head gaskets were fine. It was the nine other water/coolant leaks that took some time to sort out. There are 10mm and 12mm plugs in the water log section of the inlet manifold and air side of it as well, One plug loks to be water but is air or hot air, from back drilling of EGR path during manufacture I think I also missed your turbo classification. The banjo bolts in the turbo core rust out, so too the hard line from thermostat housing, and the one from coolant drain plug spot on turbo side head.. The throttle body also has much corroded pipes to connect hoses to that can leak. You can drill them out, tap to 27 or 28 tpi taper and fit brass male barbs if needed or bypass depending on how cold Boulder gets And as others have said it needs some attention and time to tinker to resolve stuff. I bought a set of factory manuals for what an auto elec would have charged me an hours labour. These manuals have saved me big time.. When you get in there to fix or tinker you will be able to tell us what you found -

Not going that way US$300 plus !! Checking my memory on things, Series 1 mpfi that I know of was either XT NA or RX Turbo and they used what the manuals refer to in the diagnostic trouble codes [and there is two trouble codes] as Idle switch and WOT switch. Three wires, one being a common to both circuits - EARTH. Three pins on the TPSwitch and the manual shows the arrangement of the pins The other manual I have is for 87 XT only and has two trouble codes also involving the TPSensor , one code for idle switch, the other code for the throttle sensor - a variable output in Volts I hope - the test is for Ohms ! This one has four pins, and the manual does NOT show arangement of the pins Then there is the spfi which does not get a mention in either of my factory manuals for Series 1 or 87 XT No mention of parts in the parts manuals either The spfi has a TPsensor of four pin variety The odd bit of the XT Spider TPSensor is due to the roational direction of the TPSensor to work backwards in comparison to mpfi NA 88 onwards and spfi The spfi 4 pin and the 88 on TPSensor may be the one and same part number anyone got part number for spfi TPSensor? 22633AA010 is for 87 non spidey 22633AA051 is for 88 - 91 mpfi 22633AA050 88 turbo Oh, and the US also got NA Spiders too ?? We didnt !! -
I found a reference to a crowd called Schmucks who sold one to a user. I have looked at Rock with not even finding a TPS let alone price and availability. Autozone claim to do one but asks for my zip code but as I am not in US I used Grayland WA as a zip and it sent me through captcha and still no like me ! It wont like a four digit postcode we use in Oz !!

I suppose the reason you want a more common stud pattern is wider choice of rims ? Welcome to old Subarus ! Learn to tolerate it. Snap up different rims as they pop up. Nothing nice is cheap either. I do see your point in wanting disc rear and don't let GD put you off, just take head of the warnings to get your wallet out. Drums need to be in good order to work well all their life and that just does not happen as I found. I started with machined drums, oversize shoes ground to match, new slaves and adjusted them up for 100,000 km at oil change intervals of 10,000km. As I ripped them off for disc conversion I noted the shoes had not worn very much in all that time - sort of indicates they were not doing much work. The disc rear stays in tune all the way from new pad to worn out pad so long as calipers are good, fluid is good. So you keep the better braking for the life of the disc rear

How I cured my tickety tappets EA81
jono replied to Knucklehead Saloon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well done. Try it up a mountain range on a hot day and see if need backing off a bit You got hydraulics? Subaru Australia reckon none came here in cars. As a result there is no listing for hydraulic tappets For my solids I got engine temp at half whipped covers off and set ins and outs at 4 thou. Worked for me 300,000 km on two engines -
I have searched and GD thanks, found your spfi EA81 conversion write up where I got wire colours and ECU pins, numbers and wire colours from your copies of workshop manuals Big But though, I am sure my spfi TB has only three pins- I have a three pin plug that fits but may not be off it so if I report its wire colours may put us off the scent. If spfi EA82 came out over what? eight years, was their a Series One and Two ? I shal have to check and confirm the three pin

Yes, I just hate people using a "tank" as a measure - more so when it is a thousand or more kms from a 50 litre tank [of cheaper Diesel ] and your name is Willy:, and you are driving it like you stole it Yes XT as in Vortex AWD turbo 5man in this pre 95 category shoot, a tank is just as bad as a gallon measure. I use the gallon that is 4,546.0935 ml I thought the US gallon was four litres 4.000 mls until the other day when I bought a gallon that was 3,780 mls ! Best I got from this baby was 8.3 litres per 100km highway driving on our 98 RON - our RON different from US RON too I think ! 62.5 miles divide by 8.3 litres 34.232632 miles per IMP Gallon Aus !

The EA81 switches had become very hit and miss as to whether they were going to work, the teat end having worn through over the years on one, missing on the other. I wanted mine to look factory and last - coz I sealed one side in with threebond, so its never coming out ever again

old cars blamed for road toll in Oz
jono replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
One older car, a Holden Combo attarted my attention yesterday. Its driver is givng way to may as I turn right at a T intersection, my window is open and right to my right i hear engine revving, wheels spinning while I am in the T bone position - at that time if traction propelled him forward he would have caused me to throttle him if he touched my ute ! The stupid thing is the van had a distinctive colour and business name on the side. Googled it and later found the van parked out front of their business premises. Am gonna go visit them next week to see if it was the business owner or staff that was driving it in such a menacing, dangerous manner. Presently fewer cars on the road locally, more space to display yurblefenker driving skills. Oops!! Looks like I got caught out using fb acceptable language !! -
Thanks Fuji, two mounting points on mpfi TB :)
jono replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK thanks Gloyale - for causing conflict , someone else recently suggested it was for auto trans - this is a round three pin plug in black or was it white? comes outta the TPS -
Subaru Turbo GL 10 quit on the road
jono replied to gbarkman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like you found the " timing belt install marks" look like lll. Best not to call them timing marks to avoid confusion with ignition timing scale. But yeah, as pointed out above did you give it all one full clockwise turn before next belt? This procedure can get the dizzy out 180 degrees depending on where can was to start with. Number one should be closest to firewall when 8* btdc is under pointer and rotor pointing close to it -

to EA82! Think I got into pinching the EA82 rear door light switches due to less use on them They use a retainer screw instead of EA81 just jamming into their 14 mm hole Used a step drill up to 15 mm with cut wires poked I sidecavity and used a cone drill to get hole out to 16 mm Once switch body in place used 6 mm bit through the mounting screw hole just to get a starter dimple for 3 mm drill bit to go right through. Got a much better looking and younger generation Niles made door switch. Where the door strikes the switch I added a self adhesive door cabinet anti slam button. Gonna up grade it to a thicker rubber pull through button on the door as light turns disco on the road. Cheap and cheerful improvement on the Brumby, didn't take long, just some soldering of the two wire switches each door

Just noticed my old EA82 mpfi turbo throttle body has two sets of mounting points for the two different size TPS One has about 70mm centre to centre, the other about 48mm. This should come in handy Also noticed two diferent manuafcturers to ..one is JECS the other Hitachi Hmm one has the three wire plug coming out of it which has been said to be for auto trans connection. Thinking back my GLTA was an auto 4WD 3 speed and did not have this additional plug off the TPS so these may have been for the 4 speed auto ?
