Gas neck filler tube rusted out.
jono replied to Jabbott126's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know with EA81 )yours is EA82? ) there is two filler necks across the whole range - one with the unleaded restrictor, one without the unleaded restrictor. If you have EA82 may be lucky in that all models use one filler neck offers better chance - put up a want ad in appropriate section maybe ? And state what model you have maybe -

OK, something going off in my head then ....down here, we have people saying best way to turbo an EA81 model is use a rare EA81 MY engine cross member. Well, where my brain starts to hurt is that if a turbo EA81 engine cross member came from a USDM - it would have a hole in it for the steering column to pass through in an impractical location. I was thinking before that any EA81T engine cross member in use in Oz, would have been a JDM sourced component. No one down under has suggested once we got a x mem we;d have to also knock a steering hole in it.! hurt, hurt.... -

Well, the Brumby/BRAT/MV1800 and whatever they were called in Japan does look a lot like a smaller El Camino ? is it ? -
padbolt on each side inside is what I was thinking, or add an alarm to vehickle, include a switch on the tailgate ?

EA82 axle interchange.

not on EA82 you won't, not even in a pinch -
so that is what a brush bar is ! we call them bull bar, or 'roo bar - that one certainly looks better rated as a brush bar.only as bulls and 'roo's would make a mess of it What is wrong with organising to tow it to safety for the benefit of the owner, advertise you have it in a public notice or follow abandoned vehicle laws while it is on your property and aquire it by legal means. Cewrtainly if the owner has abandoned it, won't care. But, if they have come to some sort of grief and what you then do would be a favour for a fellow subie nut ??

it is 30 year old fuel piping causing a fuel blocakge I bet, rather than the fuel pump. The gauze in the tank can get crapola on it too. The entire fuel supply line can always do with a good blow through, piece by piece. DON'T pressurise any fuel pump or fuel filter in the mix. Treat each section on its own. Been there done that twice now ....

84 subaru brat at a crossroad
jono replied to dustinsdad's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and how old is the EJ ? saw an RS Libert wagon with 465,000km on it the other day. ragged, looking thing, blew a water pump bearing, timing belt slipped, valves bent, probably all sixteen of them too. What sort of magic is Jerry working ? To be able to fit the EA82 5 speed DR boxes ? behind EA or EJ ? There is a difference and you'd ned to know, rather, Jerry would need to know before he does anything, surely ? An A 81 or 82 will do a sixteen year old, make sure he sees 17, 18 ..... -
does it have a brand name, logo or part number in its moulding/casting ? thinking you wil find Hitachi logo - two boxes of different axis inside a circle ? two ports same size as each other, so figure it is an interuptor valve of air or vapours controlled by a vacuum applied to the smaller port ...for starters

List of rims that can be used on older Subarus...
jono replied to Subaruist's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Purr zhow (as in show, not as in how) did steel rims, and from what I can recall, some of the older rims from the 70's and 80's that a few French cars had just a hub cap securing captive nut in the rim centre - no hole for old fashioned tyre fitting stands - or Subie hubs Running a set of first pic on my 84 Brumby with no mods - other than repaint and 4x4brat xcellent repro wheel nuts styled on the original dimension pug nuts -
There is nothing like a Subaru Brat...

to sum up the gen2 ute in one word - versatile Had mine 16 years, and only yesterday found one limitation ....300 kg of trailer hooked up, went off and asked for two cubic metres of recycled garden waste - the girl looked ...I assured her it was a 3 cubic metre trailer so it would fit. She din't mention she was more thinking of th weight . I felt the first metre going in, the second was nothing, until I went to go up a long haul incline. Fortunately second gear and 40 kph came into play and I got up and along, defionitely able to feel the weight. Won't do that again. Saved a second trip though -
Trying to piece together an EA81...
jono replied to afterbang's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
seen this covered before somewhere, just not sure how true it was. It seems that solid lifters fit inside the sleeve of sintered bronze? that the hydraulic lifters sat in. Also read once that someone caused problems not using solid lifters push rods with solid lifters - they said something like the oil hole diameter was ifferent in the push rod itself. Seen that they are same size hole between solids and hydraulic push rods, just they are different. olids push rods had a steel end cap on each end of an alloy push rod. Hydraulic were all steel push rod with ends shaped to the nice ball shape needed each end. Dunno if the rocker gear itself is any different though ? -
I think I was a little surprised to read the difference between the valves is a whole 1, one, uno millimetere! Is I am correct ? Or is it the bigger valve heads flowed better - there are some differences in std EA81 heads in the casting - some had support braces in the casting in between easy to see spot near head bolt heads....

OUCH ! Another one who has the skinny EA81 chassis :) or were these EA81 bodies lifted at all ?? I have dropped EA82 OHC engine into 2 EA81 bodies now, seen two others - all of standard height suspension and they fit in between the rails - just! With a mid size hammer to knock the rails about - I have about 6mm clearance on one side, about 3mm on the other side. I have even seen a twin cam EJ sitting between massaged EA81 rails - in the flesh ! Wouldn't it be easier just to bump the EA81 bost pressure up to about 10 psi ? Adding an EA82 to EA81 body also needs EA82 clutch pedal fitted to the pedal box if you are using EA82 gearbox, and mod for the clutch cable to pedal box OR make an EA82 pedal box fit to EA81 body, use maybe EA81 acc pedal. Pedal box needs extension for top bolts to steering column area to fit. If staying with EA81 gearbox you need to address the different clutch bits. EA82 cover plate is 21mm step, EA81 is 23mm. What siz clutch dia in use etc .....

I have these on my Gen2 Brumby. They do need to be closely inspected on a spindle of some sort as theyare known to end up out of round without visual blemishes. Check the inside out of round as well as the outer.

Can anyone help me reconnect communications with Mark who has gone by usernames to reflect his position along the T'sunami coast of WA and his Fuji Faith? Like many of us, he has drifted back and forth between Subies, Westfalias, Bronco and the family hack Teeyota. I must have erred on recording his landline - says not connected. His cell switches to message every flippin' time, but managed to wake the early sleeper back in January for a chat Even the number for his wifey (as he affectionately called her) now comes up with a recording that "the call was unable to be connected at this time, please try later" Come on, how many of you guys would let other members call your wife - at work ?? Hey ?? We were close for cyber buddies forming a triangle between US, UK and Oz for several years. I have tried a web site like a phone directory, sort of locates him spot on the map but rather than give me a phone number it tries to sell me all the details under the sun about Mark, his wife, daughter etc - very different from our whitepages ! Surely someone in the WA region has dealt with him, knows him and his current whereabouts would like to hear that he and family is OK PM's the best for this matter please Jonno

I think the point may be missed. I think Coronan wants to swap all his EA81T sensors over to an EA82T that has would have its own sensors stripped for the project. I am one to encourage you to try it, - part of what this forum is about - tangental thinking leading to actions , hoping for back up support from anyone in here if /when you get stuck. I am betting the TPS is not going to be interswappable, so maybe the EA81T throttle body will need mounting to the EA82T inlet manifold and that might require new stud holes or welding adaptor plate. I would like to think that the 4 pin ign module inside the two dizzies exactly the same, same wiring code and sequence so maybe even flog the EA81T ign module and screw it into the EA82T dizzy of the flapper style 3 plug ecu EA82T ? Has anyone compared weights between EA82 and EA81 ? 82 is sure heavier, with double the cams and one is longer, cam boxes, four port inlet is bigger and heavier. Use EA81T TPS Use EA81T Knock sensor Use EA81T Temp sensor for ECU Use EA81T flapper ECU Do the injectors swap in directly ?

I think the photo of the secret bits is the key , put together with a few comments by a rally fabricator I had fix my bullbar, many years ago. Brian was a Kiwi, and in the workshop of a big time Aussie rally champ. He told me that back in the day of the EA81 Subaru sold a 4WD sedan in NZ, but not here in Oz ( must be our better roads ) and he addedd that Subaru sold a kit to end up with twin webers mounted directly over the heads. Guess that is the head in the picture of parts - a 4 port head for EA81 - a performance enhancement over their already sought after now EX IN IN EX arranged EA81S twin Hitachi engine. Man, a four port head on an EA81S, or any EA81 would be a snorting beast, maybe impossible to drive daily in traffic ?? Someone get onto a Chinese based foundry to make new ones ! !!

contact Scoobidoo in Greetland - he has absolute no self control when it comes to old school stuff like this, and would be a good authority to know what it is worth for him to take it off your hands, although it may be less than what you paid for it, but I am certain he will take it off your hands, relieving you the stress of owning such a clean old low miler, affording you no more guilt, more storage space Stored since it was a three year old !! Was the fuel tank drained completely before? I had tragic event after fresh fuel inside a crusty old draind fuel tank, and seems that the nasties in the crud disolved in fresh nw fuel and reformed as a valve sticking, push rod banana maker black sticky goo on valve stems. If that car gives slightest hint of a sticky starter, flat battery - STOP and see if you can turn engine over by hand before doing anything else or serious engine damage can occur ! Then you would almost have to pay Scoobi to take it off your hands. Why does vulture come to mind right at this moment ? :)

A little trick taught to me by an automotive engineer 30 years ago (when I was in kindie ) been my practice ever since, and as a result never had to replace a sump plug, never had one not come out, never had to apply excessive force, never had one leak.....never had to do an oversize thread repair since ! thread tape and an O - ring. I have upped the thread tape from thin water plumbing rubbish to decent grade water pipe thread tape, up to gas thread tape if it is about. Usually three or four turns of tape on sump plug is enough, then select a nice tight fitting fat O ring in place of a crush style copper, aluminium or fibre washer, then do plug up to see the O ring squash BUT NOT SQUASH OUT and not much more than finger tight really. Take care that not too loose though or you will be screaming ! Good practice is to renew tape each oil change, the O - ring too but been stretched over two changes, maybe three depending on its condition. disclaimer is if you stuff things up and lose your oil, engine, gearbox, don't blame me !Sufficient thrad tape seems to be the anti leak and anti come loose agent'

too late for pics of the EA82 spfi pistons ? tops, measures from pin to top when they were out? new? You must be able to dscribe the piston tops ? Not flat top? One set of depression that look to clear valves, and at an angle, and no other deprtesion, or two separate depression 'sets' or shapes?

$175 Subaru GL = $175 problems

the coil maks the spark, the IM switches to make the coil make the spark. How'd you check the coil ? That is is there ? Not corroded away in the tower? Lucky it did not die on the road somewhre, but conveniently let you down at home I found if it is a FL, won't even crank - on EA81 bodies. My EA82 FL corroded or broke at 110 kph, touch, untouched itself, power surge spike killed things, rendered useless for three weeks ! As Gloyale has a lot of experience and makes the call for the FL, I am gonna suggest maybe the FL is in a state of decay from corrosion or broken so may stil have power across for a test lamp but not for its proper duties. My FLs failed on two cars around year 23.
