Why does it sit up higher? The newer cars have a "higher" feeling to them. The doors are a little shorter and the cars overall design makes the driver feel more on top of the car. You don't want higher struts unless you're going off roading. It makes no sense to do it otherwise. Most people complain about the obscene stock ride height.

Tore the boot? Just drive around until it starts clicking and just replace the entire axle.

So I wrecked my wagon.....again

That wasn't very nice :-\. You gotta admit, the amount of damage the car took pales in comparison to what a car of today's standards would have gotten. -
Always jumping to the expensive parts, eh? :-p When my MAF was breaking, it exhibited all kinds of symptoms, including power loss - at all ends of the RPM spectrum however. Ericem, broken sensors don't always throw codes. My MAF didn't throw a code until I physically broke it and it was performing incorrectly for a week before I blew compressed air into it and broke it.

But there are far more EJ22's on the road with their original hg's doing just fine. And most of them have more miles Although, if I recall correctly, the car leading the subaru highmileage club is a Canadian spec OBW with a 2.5. It has something close to 500k miles on it. I don't know if that's original HG....I'm sure it says on the site.

HG is a pretty involved job (at least, on my scale). It involves basically taking off the entire top end of the engine - not an easy task for an unskilled person. Easy for a skilled person though. Pick up a Chilton's or Haynes manual...this will give you all the necessary torque specs for when you pull the cams and etc.
