  1. If you want 300 at the crank, boosting and tuning an EJ22T would be a good bet. Get forged internals and a huge turbo and intercooler and you could probably hit 250 chp no problem.
  2. Yeah, the VSS is shot. Sorry, but that gear is absolutely necessary and it requires dropping the tranny to fix it.
  3. Air pocket in the system? Poor performing cooling system? Might be time to flush out that system and put in some new coolant.
  4. Why does it sit up higher? The newer cars have a "higher" feeling to them. The doors are a little shorter and the cars overall design makes the driver feel more on top of the car. You don't want higher struts unless you're going off roading. It makes no sense to do it otherwise. Most people complain about the obscene stock ride height.
  5. Tore the boot? Just drive around until it starts clicking and just replace the entire axle.
  6. That wasn't very nice :-\. You gotta admit, the amount of damage the car took pales in comparison to what a car of today's standards would have gotten.
  7. Yep, they should work just fine. 5x100 bolt pattern. All legacies up until now have that bolt pattern and all imprezas up to 2005? have that bolt pattern and offset as well. It's a fairly common swap.
  8. My dad put the hitch on my car by himself....wired it up too. It probably took him 3 hours and the aid of a hydraulic jack, but he got it done.
  9. No line pressure test needed. The very nature of the fact that you pulled the car without it running is enough to tell us that you need a new tranny. Some people use tranny coolers. Not seen as absolutely necessary like the SVX.
  10. My 91 doesn't look too bad on the underside. I've never washed the underside of the car, and it's lived its life in the saltbelt for 15+ years.
  11. ericem, the edit button works you know. So, it's an automatic AWD car. Did you tow it on the ground in neutral or did you tow it on a dolly? If you did either of those, your tranny's shot.
  12. Always jumping to the expensive parts, eh? :-p When my MAF was breaking, it exhibited all kinds of symptoms, including power loss - at all ends of the RPM spectrum however. Ericem, broken sensors don't always throw codes. My MAF didn't throw a code until I physically broke it and it was performing incorrectly for a week before I blew compressed air into it and broke it.
  13. Over 4200. Wonder if you have a fuel back up. Is it a loss of forward motion...like the car just stops accelerating or does the engine literally cut post 4200 RPM?
  14. But there are far more EJ22's on the road with their original hg's doing just fine. And most of them have more miles Although, if I recall correctly, the car leading the subaru highmileage club is a Canadian spec OBW with a 2.5. It has something close to 500k miles on it. I don't know if that's original HG....I'm sure it says on the site.
  15. HG is a pretty involved job (at least, on my scale). It involves basically taking off the entire top end of the engine - not an easy task for an unskilled person. Easy for a skilled person though. Pick up a Chilton's or Haynes manual...this will give you all the necessary torque specs for when you pull the cams and etc.
  16. Coolant Temp to start with...that'll make the car not start too well. Then knock because that can affect mpg and last purge solenoid. Of course, reset the ECU on the final time to make sure that the purge is a constant throw code.
  17. I'd go with whatever it says in the manual. I'd like to know how running 87 and not getting pinging is going to cause "problems down the road."
