I could explain to you how the FWD fuse works, but how it works is rather irrelevant. Either way, your gas mileage will not improve if you put in that fuse and it's not meant to be used except for diagnostic purposes. If you want a car that gets better mileage, get another car or convert yours to FWD with a FWD tranny (and don't forget to remove all the rear drive parts).

I'd do a fluid flush and replace with new, good gear oil. If that doesn't quiet down the grinding then you'll have to go to more drastic measures. If it's power lock equipped...check to make sure that the door locks are plugged in on the inside of the doors. Or, is it that they don't even unlock with the key?

No. No 1990's came with Turbo's. In 1991, they were only in Sedans (Sport Sedan to be exact). From 92-94 they were also in wagons called "Touring Wagons" which only came with Automatics (while the Sport Sedan continued to be offered in both 4EAT and 5MT variations). It's definitely worth 1k if you need it just as a daily driver. Hell, try to talk her down to 900.

knock sensor

Busted knock sensors don't make the car run any differently. Mine was broke for years before I got a new one and it didn't affect MPG at all. It's a very easy fix, just attack it from the left side of the engine and use a 12 or 8" extension. -
It happens I think we all agree in consensus: If you're used to having a minivan, you're not going to like the Outback or Forester because it's definitely a downsize. However, if you're willing to deal with that and maybe downsize your stuff as well, you'll be all right with an Outback. Just FYI, my parents put both my brother and I at small ages in an 86 GL sedan and had no problems toting us and our stuff around.
