  1. Dude. Over on the bbs, Douglas Vincent has been running 50shot nos and twin superchargers on his NA 2.2 block. I don't believe he's done any internal work to it, and it still runs just fine (it's got a lot of miles too).
  2. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-97-SUBARU-IMPREZA-2-2-2-5L-NON-TURBO-BK-AIR-INTAKE_W0QQitemZ150012712311QQihZ005QQcategoryZ38634QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Have fun. Cone filters are worthless if you're not going to plumb it into the fender. If you don't, you'll just be sucking in warm air, completely nullifying the extra airflow of the cone and straight pipe. Plus, MAF's sometimes get pissy with the cone's airflow.
  3. One usually gets all the lights on the dash, the Christmas tree as we call it, when the alternator is dying. That burning smell may have been your alternator frying...
  4. Maybe the clutch on the compressor is worn out. I'd get another person, and turn on the A/C and if it doesn't blow out cold air when the compressor is turning, then something else is wrong.
  5. 4EAT's aren't really that bad. Just the SVX ones suck because of their crappy gearing. If anything, I'd go with an MT swap. But..that's me.
  6. I'm being honest though. Sometimes my passenger side door freezes as well. Takes a good slam to make it go away. Could always shoot some lubricant in there too...
  7. Slam the door until it gets unjammed. It happens to my 1991 on occasion, I just slam it once or twice to unjam it.
  8. Replacing the knock sensor didn't get rid of it. I'm slowly running out of sensors to change :-(
  9. Well, I may just call Autozone today to see if they have the part so I can go get it. I know my knock sensor has a big giant crack in it. Yeah, Dillsburg is one of those towns between "somewhere" and Gettysburg. It's a nice place though . I went to the Utz factory a long long time ago on a tour, it was nice.
  10. When it comes to replacing sensors, that's the only one I'm down to. My ECU threw codes for the Knock and MAF, but the Knock sensor doesn't cause this kind of issue. I'm having an MAF shipped to me ASAP.
  11. Don't buy the parts from the dealership. They will choke you to death. Get remanufactured ones from autozone or some parts store with a lifetime warranty. The dealer will charge you at least double of what a normal parts store will for a part with no warranty. Why is it that people always want to go to the dealer for parts!? Argh...
  12. You can find them all over ebay. Be warned however, unless you're going to do some extra work to get the air filter out of the engine bay, it's not worth your time, effort, or money to get a "CAI."
  13. AWD halfshafts can be had from autozone for $59+ tax. These have a lifetime warranty. Then, you can either replace it yourself or pay someone an hour's worth of labor to do it for you.
  14. Replace the halfshaft. Not worth the time or effort to try to replace the boot/fill it with grease/etc. Besides, who knows what dirt got into that joint with the boot torn.
  15. You're having the exact same problem I am with my car. Mine idles like crap and hesitates like mad to the point where it's not driveable at this point in time. I have pretty much the same engine as you, only with a different ECU, so as soon as I get my problem nailed down, I'll post here so maybe you can try that fix.
  16. I'd just drive 300 miles anf fill it up. Divide by the gallons and you'll see what your MPG is. I ignore my gas gauge and only pay attention to the low fuel light.
  17. Are they lifetime warranty ones? If they aren't go buy LT ones so you don't have to pay for new ones everytime. Do you consistently park with your tires cocked to one side or another or do you do a lot of sharp turning? That can really tear up the boots and the joints.
  18. Ugh. My friend's 97 is a dog compared to my car. She has an autotragic as well.
  19. Any EJ series transmission will bolt up to your engine. So, basically, any transmission from a Subaru made from 1990 to 1999. You can also get trans from Legacies from 1990 to current and Imprezas from 1994 to current. As long as the donor car's engine name has EJ in it. Common swaps: 5MT's from Legacies and Impreza's. 6MT's from new WRX STi's (but these are really expensive). A swap will probably run you in the 2000 dollar range assuming you have someone do it for you. Parts could be pretty cheap depending on your source.
  20. Engine's probably worth beween 200 and 300 for the long block. EJ22T shortblocks fetch more because of their uniqueness.
  21. I can't take any of the badging off the back of my car...except for maybe the insignia. I wouldn't want to though. The paint under the logo is fresh, the paint around it is dyed out from the sun.
  22. Dying or dead alternators usually give you the Christmas tree (brake lights and CEL go on for no apparent reason). If you don't have these though, you do describe problems associated with a dying/dead alternator. I wouldn't keep driving it like that though. You'll wear out your battery.
  23. Oh man. You can't believe how crucial that is. Tire matching makes the car drive so much better.
