  1. Along the line of the brakes dragging possibly, could the same be said for bearings. Make sure the are greased well. I just bought my 83 Subie and that is one of the things I did for preventitive maint. Good Luck
  2. Hi y'all. Well here goes my ongoing story of my po' lil' subaru. I have an 83 EA81 GL Sta. Wag. Ran rough for awhile and finally stopped altogether. Short version is I bought a remanufactured distributor. Figured either the pick-up coil or the ignitor was bad. Installed the dist. Car ran fine for about 3-4 days. Only thing I noticed was a very intermittent hiccup. Thought maybe I had fuel/fuel line problems. Well today it just died. And after much swearing and checking of possible fuel problem, I thought to check the trouble code from the ECM. I had cleared it and when it ran good, no code came up. But today I got the same code as before. 22. "Ignition pulse system". So, I'm guessing one of two things happened. Either the remanufactured distributor wasn't good. But when it ran, it ran fine. Or, something??? fried the pick-up coil or ignitor. Any ideas what could cause failure to coil/ignitor. Only normal two wires come from distributor to main coil. One to positivie side, one to negative. I thought I had checked the coil before. Had 12 volts to pos. side. Even changed to new coil (before replacing disty) and that made no difference. Anyway. Could I have received faulty remanufactured disty. Or could something/coil/? have made new pick-up coil/ignitor go bad? If so, what? I'm also leaning towards trying to put new/different type distributor in. Ant ideas on trying plain ol' points. Do away with electronic crap altogether. Thanks for any ideas:)
  3. I've posted before. Have an 83 2WD ea81 that now won't run at all. Some suggestions are to check.replace CAS. But me being somewhat a dummy I don't know what a CAS is. Still looking for disty. Also, ongoing problem. Looking for parts either thru dealership or autozone-like places, parts are NOT found under the year and model I give them, i.e. 83 DL 1800 Sta Wag 2WD. Any suggestions. Thanks!! Getting the ark ready. Rain in New England for next 7-10 days.
  4. \OK. I give up. What's the CAS. When I try to get parts from Autozone or dealerships, they give mr no useful info. Like I'm not supposed to have a pickup coil for my year and model. Any sugesstions here?
  5. Voltage seems OK. Have 12 on plus side. Really leaning towards pick-up coil as culprit. Not having much luck finding a used disty, tho. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. 83 Sta Wag EA81, Nippon coil, disty.
  6. Carbs aren't usually that bad to do your self if your at all handy. I'd suggest using your old one for all settings, i.e. fuel mix screw, choke. BTW. I am looking for parts for an 83. Specifically a distributor. Might your friend have one?? Good luck and thanks
  7. Subby only has 45,000 miles on it. Thanks for reply. I'm trying to find a whole disty in my area but junk yards around here all say they have none. I put a request in here. Hope that works. Thanks again. Stupid Red Sox:)
  8. Me again. Can I put in a distributor from say an 84 or 85 into my 83 EA81. I have pick-up coil and ignitor in mine now. Ones I've seen from other years have slightly different guts. But wouldn't overall principal be same as long as gears and such fit? Does this make sense?
  9. Hello everyone. Nice board y'all have. Be patient. Probably many questions from me. OK. ECS light started to come on about 2 months ago. Not all the time at first, but now it is on and won't start at all. Comp light flashes 2 long 2 short. Supossedly Ignition pulse system. Which I find no info on in my manual and can only guess. At first ECS light was intermittent. Came on some days. Some days car ran fine. So far I have cleaned cannister filter, checked vac lines (no apparent leaks) changed coil, plugs, wires, rotor, dist. cap. Even took to local Sub. dealer as what I thought was last resort. Was told carb. dirty, and distributor shaft had play. $1,100 to fix. Well, I've owned my own garage and not that that makes me an expert, but shaft doesn't have play( I have an 85 Brat which I use for reference and checked play in shaft.) Anyway, I just don't seem to be getting any spark at plugs. I do get some from coil, but not bright blue spark. Just small orange. I'll stop here and see what y'all have to say from this, as I tend to get confusing at times. Also. I seem to have a hard time finding the right part listing in Autozone, etc. I have an 83 GL 2wd, EA81, Auto Trans. I find more parts listed under 82 GL than 83. Thanks !
