you need to check more than just the dif ratio, the 99 legacy trans changed in the early part of that manufacture year. in 99 they went to a trans with a TZ1A2ZJEBA (outback) part number rather than the 98 version TZ102Z2DBA (outback), the TZ1A2Z... is a phase 2 trans. this change in the legacy trans included a wiring change. you need to find out which trans the 99 used and which trans your other car used. impreza may have changed a year earlier or later (earlier i think?). using the "new" phase 2 trans will require a lot of wire splicing and figuring out. what year are you putting the trans in? does the 99 have a spin on trans filter? compare the wiring connectors to make sure they match.

i look at the rear diffs listed in the opposed forces parts lookup website and the diff ratios appear to be same as the legacy for the late 90s. 2.2L man - 3.9 2.2L 4eat - 4.11 2.5L man - 4.11 2.5L 4eat - 4.44 1.8L was the same as 2.2L, and pre 95 was not necessarily the same post 95. but again, i just looked this up and i may be wrong, or the web site may be wrong.

logic says they would be or at least a very close variation. the most i can figure out is that subaru makes 3 ring gears, 37, 39 & 40 teeth and 2 pinion gears, 9 & 10 teeth. (plus the odd ball 11 tooth pinion for the svx). these gears allow for the gear ratios we are most familiar, 3.7, 3.9, 4.11, 4.44, but there are other possible ratios. so my guess is imprezas use some combination of these existing gears. you can do some research at http://opposedforces.com/parts/ and find the actual part numbers for the gears in the diff in question and compare them to another. but, i may be wrong, so do your homework.

i have a coil pack if you need it , new OEM, 50$ shipped. legacy 2.2L, 97 - 98; impreza 2.2L 97 - 98, legacy ej25L 97 - 99, part number 22433AA400 http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/johnceggleston/?action=view¤t=coilpack.jpg http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/johnceggleston/?action=view¤t=coilpackpartnumber.jpg

Converting 3.54 SVX lsd to 3.9 or 4.11?
johnceggleston replied to Gloyale's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
that's what i thought, but how do you get a 3.54 using a 9 or 10 tooth pinion? -

ok, i'm in over my head here but: if the svx is a 3.54, it has an 11 tooth pinion with a 39 tooth ring gear. does any other subaru have an 11 tooth pinion?? -
i absolutely agree with this, but only because i've been reading it here for the last 3 years. however, last night i was looking through a gates.com timing belt catalog and they did not note the 97 - 98 ej22 as an interferrence engine. ( they did note the 2.5 as interferrence and i forget if they did for 99 - 00.) i assumed they had failed to do their home work. but i was wondering, has any one here had bent valves in a ej22 97 - 98 (99?) after a timing belt break? just checking.

first, what makes her think the cat is going bad. it maybe, but dealers like to say that when you get a cel code p0420, which is usually a bad front o2 sensor, not a bad cat. who said her cat was bad and why? second: https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/ http://www.1stsubaruparts.com/

question regarding compression test: can you manually turn the cams and close all valves to do a compression test with no timing belt? manual close the valves to no 1, hookup the compression tester and then kick over the starter with no timing belt. repeat for 2, 3, 4. would this work? trying to learn, john

slightly off topic, i was amazed to learn, years ago, that mountain climbing ropes were rate by a certain number of falls, a 5 fall rope or an 11 fall rope. after it had been through it's rating, it had to be retired. you could use it for a swing set, but not climbing. who knew you could engineer a rope. i was amazed, i was also young and dumb. i guess seat belts are a one crash belt.

i think there is supposed to be a vin etched into the block on the passenger side near the trans/engine joint. but i was never able to find mine until i pulled the engine. look for it on the 2.5 so you'll know where to look on the 2.2. you'll want to know if it's a 98 or assume it is if you don/t know. 98 is an interference engine , 96 is not. the timing belt is due at 105k.
