  1. is this the same car that you were trying to install the TZ102Z1DBA jdm tans into, a 99 outback wagon auto? if the JDM engine was bolted to a 4.11 trans in the JDM market, then there is a really good chance you need to swap the flex plates. in the us, the 4.11 ratio auto trans have the smaller TC and flex plate. the 4.44 auto trans have the larger TC and flex plate.
  2. first, the hardware on these is all the same, only the programming is different. and i have run a 96 lego TCU in a 95 lego with no issues. i think i even tried the 95 lego TCU in my 97 GT to see what difference that would make, none. i was hoping to cure a hard 1-2 shift. but none of these are turbos , so maybe that makes a difference. but it would not cause the engine, trans, or computer to blow up. it just might not drive the same. anyway, www.car-part.com will have a few. either look for one close to home or look for one cheap and ship it in. i doubt they are expensive. they almost never fail. my guess is the ''switch'' the PO installed may have caused the damage to the TCU. as nipper said, make sure the wiring is right.
  3. yes if you start with a phase 2 trans you have to stick with a phase 2 trans. TZ1A2ZJEBA-WZ 1999 OB = phase 2 TZ102Z1DBA-KC ? JDM = phase 1, don't know the ratio. in the US, a TZ102Z2DBA it would be a phase 1, 97 - 98 outback auto trans w/ 4.44 ratio. it is definitely a phase 1 trans, but i do not know of any way to identify the ratio except to count the teeth on the ring gear. but this is a moot point since the electronics are different than yours. the intakes do not swap, phase 1 to phase 2. for all practical purposes you cannot swap a phase 1 and phase 2 engine . you can swap short blocks and keep the original heads and intake though.
  4. year, model, engine trans, miles? with AT Temp, i'm guessing auto trans. it comes omn and blinks while driving? but it does not come on at start up? does it down shift for no reason ? i had these symptom in my 00 lego auto trans, it was caused by a loose ground wire on the engine intake.
  5. i found this on legacyGT.com for a 99 outback key fob. (alpine 99 - 04) i would probably add a little WD40 to the drying process. it can't hurt. HTH
  6. 95 to 99 legacy (outback) interiors are swappable. check out the linh below to see which ones have the ''fake wood plastic trim''. i think the GT had it. i had a 97 OBW LTD and i dont remember the fake wood trim, but i could just not remember, a senior moment if you will. Subaru archived models, options, prices, history- all models- 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006... 1969
  7. first double check that you got a VSS 1 trans code. these are rare, unless it is a wiring / connector issue. i have never heard of the VSS 1, rear speed sensor, failing, but maybe. VSS 2 code is much more common, does your speedometer work correctly? the TCU need both speed sensors to operate the AWD . if one is signal missing, there is no AWD. the 94 has a speedo cable that runs from the trans front diff to the speedometer. and the ''speed sensor'' is a part of that in the dash. i do not know enough about that set up to help more. but if your speedo is not working that could be the problem.
  8. if no one here has one close, www.car-part.com put in your zip and sort by distance.
  9. my only concern is that usually the wrong cam causes a no start situation, doesn't it?
  10. have you tried the cam sensor from the old engine? in reviewing the part numbers and usage for the 05, ej25 sohc cam sprocket, it was first used on the 99 ej22, and then on the 03+ ej25 , possibly until today?? but i don't know. so it appears that the 00 - 02/3 ej25 sohc cam sprockets are different. but if the sprockets on these engines are the same , (05 RS auto vs. 05 RS manual) then maybe the sensor, connector, or wiring.
  11. makes no sense to me either, but they do have different part numbers, and engine ID numbers, and they are trans specific. swap the cam sprocket and i'll bet the CEL goes away. EDIT: (1 day later) upon further research, it does not look like the cam and crank sprockets are different. i should have looked into it more in the beginning.
  12. i have no idea. but subaru is such a small car company, it is very costly for them to have a ''special'' trans. generally speaking, in the late 90s, from the trans oil pump back, all the trans are the same. only the front difffs are different. i have heard some say this is not 100% correct for all years and all models, but is is close enough so that the trans will move the car.
  13. if you buy it, keep in mind you may need to replace the trans. if the computer is the only problem, tell him to fix and you will buy. throw in another $100 for the computer and the labor, if it works. if it does not work, walk away. and tell him you will up front you will. this is no risk to you, but it makes him prove he knows what he is talking about.
  14. typos aside, it is an eJ22, not an eG22. the 99 outback will handle any ej22 95 to 98. not the 99 ej22. 95 is plug and play, if it has EGR usually from an auto trans car, no changes except fot the flex plate foe the auto trans. 96 - 98, if it has EGR usually from an auto trans car, will need the flex plate from your original car AND the exhaust manifold y-pipe.
  15. not if you uder the arrows, NOT THE ARROWS, NEVER THE ARROWS. the timing mark on the crank sprocket is on on of the REAR tabs of the sprocket when the crank sprocket keyway is at 6 o'clock. maybe, but i'm not convinced yet.. no, the engine in a 99 outback, is an ej25D, 2.5L engine. do you have a 99 outback ???? if, if, if, you have a 99 outback with the ej25 , 2.5L engine: you can use any ej25, 2.5L engine from 96 - 99. you can also use an ej22 engine from 95 - 98 IF, IF, IF, it has EGR. (ERG ej22 engines are usually found in auto trans cars.) but different years have different needs. but first make sure you used the CORRECT timing marks. once a month some one says ''new timing belt, correct marks, car will not start''. and the MOST COMMON cause of the no start is the WRONG timing marks. check it . good luck.
  16. jumping from a 70s camaro to an ej22 may be a bit of a let down, but the ej25 ain't no camaro either, so no big deal. but bratman is right, the ej22 is cheaper and easier to find, more reliable, more durable, and much more forgiving. keep oil & coolant in it and it will be running long after he has moved on. and the 95 - 96 are non-interference.
  17. you are sure they are leaking? cause they usually leak the other way, into the coolant, not the oil. are you loosing coolant? anyway if you are sure, just replace the gaskets in the car. you might consider sending off an oil sample to bobstheoilguy.com and having it analyzed.
  18. so if you park your cars in the same garage will there be little subarus running around next model year? congrats!! you make a very handsome and happy couple.
  19. you can use any auto trans from 96 - 98 from a 2.5L car, Outback, Forester, GT, LSi, in that order. the GT and Lsi will throw off your speedo a little. check out www.car-par.com , put in your zip and sort by distance. search each year and model separately.
  20. rumor has it these will work as replacement bushings. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Help-Chrysler-GM-Jeep-1974-1998-Windshield-Wiper-Linkage-Bushing-Assortment/_/N-25to?itemIdentifier=426072_0_0_
  21. just around the block, manually shifting the trans into all gears. you just want to mix the old and new fluid.
  22. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/134953-help-ej22-sohc-dual-port-exhaust-egr-tapping/ DO NOT DRILL TOO DEEP!!! read the entire thread and any linked threads as well. more info is better. ''search'' is your friend.
