  1. 2015 update: on another forum, a member bought a 99 GT instrument cluster to replace a non-working cluster on a 97 GT. iirc, he tried to replace the face plates on the speedo, etc. and busted some . then tried to replace them and then none worked correctly. once installed, everything worked on the 99 cluster except the speedo. i thought the 99 speedo was a one year item, and mentioned it. so he pulled both apart and swap the 97 circuit board into the 99 speedo. and presto, everything worked. if the year info is accurate, could this be a new fix for the 99 speedo? or is the 99 GT speedo different from the 99 outback speedo?
  2. if buying 4 new tires would not keep you from paying the mortgage or putting food on the table, i would do that. you may be able to manage the ones you have and put off buying new, but god forbid the tires cause an accident for a teen driver. (your son may not be a teen.) if you do not buy new now, i would try and identify THE bad tire, if only one, and swap it to the rear. having one of the most worn on the rear and one on the front , this will lessen the potential damage to the transfer clutch. but eventually you will need new. also, what caused the bad wear on your tires? be sure to correct that to avoid a repeat.
  3. simple solution, swap in a 92 - 94 ej22 engine. folow the vac hose diagram on the hood. and live with the EGR trouble code.
  4. yes, tires can cause the car to pull. swapping front to rear will change every thing, and should eliminate the pull, unless another tire has a problem. rotating one tire to the rear at a time will help identify which one is the culprit. of course there could be 2 bad tires?? you SHOULD NOT buy 2 tires. the AWD system needs all 4 to be within 1/4 inch in circumference. your circumference is in the 82 inch range. managing the tires so they wear evenly, do not pull , and you use all the tread is going to be a challenge. good luck. i just went through this with my son's 97 avalon. but all of his driving is to high school and back, so we'll muddle through until we need tires. probably next summer or fall. rotate the tires.
  5. corrected, thanks olnick. if the car is obd2, an odb2 ej22 will plug and play. EGR is preferred if you want to avoid a trouble code. if the car is odb1, then just use the harness (and/ or intake) from an ej18. blocks with heads are all dumb until you get to 05/06 ? and variable valve timing. you could use an ej25 block and heads if the ej18 intake would bolt on. but it won't. the intakes for the ej22 and ej18 will swap. i have done it. the ej18 intake is taller, the EGR pipe is longer, but the ej18 intake will bolt on with no problem. and since the car was already running with an ej22 engine, even if it is not original, just use that intake w/ harness on a new long block. and drive on. or the discussion should be, is the car obd1 or obd2?
  6. grossgary has done this. he put the intake off of an ej22 on to an ej18, and then swapped it into an ej25 car. it runs great , it is under powered, and it has an EGR trouble code that will not go away. if you can swap the ej18 that far, it should be easy to swap an ej22 back. there should be a vac hose diagram on the underside of the hood. two things are important, 1/ the vac hoses reach the the right places that are NOT on the manifold, charcoal canister and egr stuff. how2 they get there is a little less important than that do get there. 2/ there are no open nipples on the intake manifold . no vac leaks. if the wiring harness on the intake / engine will plug into the harness in the car, the engine will run. the easy cheap solution is to buy a 95 ej22 w/ egr and swap it in.(EDIT ;CORRECTED) i'm pretty sure all ej18 cars had EGR. this is not rocket science, this is more like lego land. just snap it together.
  7. i would R&R the instrument cluster . check the wire connectors, and thje screws on the back side on the circuit board. they act as the ground connection.
  8. do a search, "how to fill and burp your cooling system" your cooling system is not full. did you remove the vent plug when you were filling the system. did you replace the t-stat? if yes, was it a subaru part from the dealer?
  9. IF THE ''CODE 24'' is the durt C solenoid, then the FWD light will not come on because the duty C is bad. no FWD light, then the duty C is bad.
  10. don't be scared of the GT or LSi. most folks who have done that swap claim you cannot tell the difference in the speedo. that may be due in part to the fact that your speedo is reading fast now. most do from the factory.
  11. this info may be correct. i do not know. researching JMD final drive ratios is not easy. researching USDM ratios was not easy either 10 years ago, but easier today. i do not think the trans has the final drive ratio that you need, 4.44, but again i do not know for sure. you can use any trans, (from the usa) from any 2.5L car 96 - 98 . (they will all have ID# that start with TZ102Z2..... except maybe the forester, but it will still swap.) outback 96 - 98 forester 98 GT 96 - 98 LSi 96 - 97/8 in that preferred order. outbaqck and forester are an exact match. the GT and LSi will throw off your speedo, a little about 8%. look here for a trans www.car-part.com sort by zip code to save on shipping . you will have to search each model and year separately.

  13. there is also a great post on how to clean the fob buttons . it has a good write up and great pics. basically, remove the circuit board, soak it in some thing, rinse it in something, let it dry. it makes the buttons work better, does not hurt the electronics, and is cheaper than replacement. maybe search ''clean keyfob'' or "clean key* fob*" or clean remote, you get the idea. as mentioned , if the 06 and 05 fobs look alike, you can interchange them and program to your new ride. or have them work both. (some times complicated, but maybe better than carrying 2 fobs.) if they do not look the same, they may not swap.
  14. my research indicates that the H6 never had the 4.44 rear diff , 01 - 04. they needed the 4.11 to help with the fuel economy, plus, the h6 already had plenty of power. no need to gear it down. and to the best of my knowledge , it is the only outback auto trans that did not have the 4.44 ratio 96 - 04. so i would double check before you assume the h6 diff is 4.44.
  15. on a scale of 1 to 10, the chances that the cats are bad would be a 1, or very, very, very, low. generally the p0420 can be cured byu a new front o2 sensor, it should be a subaru quality part or BETTER. any cheap aftermarket part will not work. the next step, assuming that does not work, is a replacement rear o2 sensor. that one can be more generic. usually this clears the p0420 problem. if it does not, ask about the ''anti-fouler fix'' it will work. save your money, do not buy new cats.
  16. is it possible, yes. is it practical .... i would guess no but i have never done it. imho, from my ''never done it '' perspective, you would be re-learning as you go. but if you go back the way you came, you already know what you need to know. i do think it would be easier to install the trans from above. since you have the hoist, use it. OR slide it in place from below, and then lift it from above with the hoist. this would seem to simplify the lifting in to place process. or at least one end of it.
  17. see the phillips head plug between 26 and 27 inches? that is the vent plug. are we dealing with your 99 lego? you should have one of these.
  18. acyually, it was listed correctly, i typo-ed in my answer. the TZ102ZDBA is a 98 - 99 outback auto trans. (97 is TZ102Z2CBA) my mistake. so again, swap away. if you feel the need the confirm this info, look up hte trans part number at http://opposedforces.com/parts the trans ID# will be listed with the part number of the trans. click on the part number and then the usage info and it will list the cars and yeas of usage. rumor has it that you need to flush the svx ''trans cooler lines '' before you do the swap. part of the failure is ''crap'' clogging the filter. adding a trans fluid filter would not be a bad thing either. in all the paper work i have seen, the TZ102ZDBA is shown as 98 - 99 auto trans outrback. but in 9 years, this is the first time i have ever heard pf any one with a 99 version. almost ALL 99 auto trans are the phase 2 TZ1A2ZJEBA auto trans. those are fairly common, but will not swap into your car. this outback is very unique. they did not make many that got the phase 1 trans.
  19. this is a phase 1, 97 - 98 auto trans from an outback. it is a 4.44 final drive trans. BUT the svx is NOT a 4.44 final drive ratio car. so be sure to get the rear diff as well. but the trans electronics are a plug and play. good luck.
  20. interesting. in all the posts regarding a 00 - 04 ej25 engine swaps, and all the advice given about swapping the cam and crank sprockets, never once have i heard any mention about different timing belts. who knew?
  21. if both cars have an ej25, no ez30, the trans will swap and run fine. the only possible difference is the speedo gears. but if the stock tire size for both cars are the same then the speedo gears will not be an issue. and even if the tire sizes are different, the difference is going to be relatively small. in the 90s the tires were the same. swap away.
  22. it is a 20 year old car. chances are it is a hose leak. did you remove the intake to replace the knock sensor? how did the coolant puddle / leak?
  23. come on, you didn't really use 3 tanks of fuel letting it idle in your drive way did you? happy motoring.
