crank pulley / harmonic balancer EA82 stuff
Quidam replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ea 82t have harmonic balancers. -
Sorry, pics taken on the run. Deserves an explaniation, huh? Quality fasteners and all good parts. Cylinder heads Gen 1 NOS and reman, no cracks. New stainless valves. VF 4 turbo. Times 2. I got three welders and none of them work. A good bit of welding to do.
-
Reason not to ej it. I don't owe anybody an explaniation.

"My boss/friend/shop owner/tuner says it looks like its loosing spark," You might need to regap the spark plugs. People go as low as .025 I believe.

Project X EA-82 1989 Dual Range 5 Speed Sedan
Quidam replied to Quidam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, I'll show you what I/ve done soon. This thin is going to rock. It weighes 2400 pounds. How much does it weigh.? lol -
Ea- 82 under construction. Rebuilt. Largest Delta Cams I can get. Don't have these. 1989 SPFI short block, decked .016, so I've been told. NOS Pink drivers heads. I'm going to hog thease out. .012 cut off deck. Totally ported, new valves with multi angle valve job. Titanium Retainers and New Genuine Subaru valve springs. SPFI intake manifold. Weber Carb? 38/38 . Accel Ignition that I have. Full Electronic for carb. Car is wired for SPFI so I can do that when I want. Going to wire the car for twin turbo as well. Damn, I'm not fond of telling people what I'm going to do. I'll post pictures. I need to paint the header with VHT. The Ring package fits nice and tight., custom rings from 2 different sets, Japan. These heads will flow excellent CFM when I'm done with them. I've ported 8 sets I believe. Stover Engines. Steel cam case studs and nuts. 7500 RPM target. Hand polished Valve Rockers Japan HLA. New Genuine Subaru oil pump. ... Later On

YW. SPFI and Carb block pistons sit flush with the deck of the block. Headgasket is a nominal .060 thick. So, that's .060 piston to head clearance stock. You would be fine lopping .030 off the block. Tightening the quench alone ups the power plus you have higher compression. Turbo is a bit different. Pistons sit like .017 above the deck so about .043 piston to head. Stock pistons you'd be ok with .025 to .030 piston to head. With a forged piston you'd want .040 piston to head. But we're talking shaving a carb/spfi block here.

ea82 help horrible noisy lifter
Quidam replied to jaytee5211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ebay has new ones listed. -
Hi JesZeK, Factory specs. grinding limits on the heads are .012", on the block is .016". You can shave .028 off the block and not worry about clearance problems. I've measured valve to piston clearance and it's quite generous. Forget what it is exactly but it's well over .100". Really no worries about interference.

You want to cut any and all wear out of the cylinders. Turbo will blow through any thing less. Hone it and see how it looks. You can get such hones at Auto Zone and such for a deposit, refunded when returned. It's a real challenge to get a block and all the small passages cleaned out If the bearings go like that. Might ruin all your new work if it's not clean. Cracked pistons, scored cylinder walls, bearing pollution, not good. The oil pan is sheet metal pieces welded together, your call but some would just replace it as it's hard to clean as well. You can certainly try though. hth

Why would you fool around with a 2.0? It will never make the power of a 2.5. And we're mucking his thread up.

do we have rev limiters that we don't know about?
Quidam replied to jdgmbi1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What I described can be peer reviewed. It's not valve float. 7500 rpm under load in the lower gears. It won't pull that rpm in higher gears. -
Go to Rock Auto and look in fuel/air for an 86 gl OHC. If you want plug and play match the looks of your fuel pump with one listed.

intake and throtle body spacers
Quidam replied to ferp420's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA 82 rod and main bearings are larger than EA 81. I fail to see how the bearings could ever be a problem. Provided they have proper lubrication. -

Quidam replied to jdgmbi1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, there is that:0 ea 82. Do a full tune up and put the highest octane fuel in it available to you. When you've got a full tank of the higher octane fuel in it, go full advance on the distributor. Rev it until it simply shuts down while in gear. I't like you have a switch that's been flipped to off. -

Not valve float, I know the difference. I'm talking about 7500 rpm under load. Try it you'll see. First you would have to tune it to actually rev to that rpm and run cleanly. -

If you were to install the SPFI ea 82 stuff on an ea 81 you would have a rev limiter. It simply shuts down at 7500 rpm. -

I don't know of any dual core new available. I've looked hard. I came to the conclusion If I want one, to use two single core and have a radiator shop turn them into a dual core. Having a set of dual core radiator tanks would be a huge advantage. -
