  1. Sounds like piston slap. I've seen cracked piston skirts, but not in a Subaru. The sound made with them is the same as piston slap. The noise even goes away when it's warmed up. But some subarus don't even have "slapper skirts". The EJ as designed originally had piston skirts, don't know if your motor has them though. Here's a visual of some Subaru pistons. Two EA-82 on the left. An EJ-25, then a EA-81.
  2. Hey, Google Weber jet extensions. I don't know if they're available for that carb. Doug Edit: Yea, never mind. The jets are screwed into the bottom of the float bowl any way.
  3. Hey, If you spun a bearing, you'd see it in the oil when you drain. Shiney flakes. If you spun a bearing, you would have to go over size. No more than .010 turning the crank. However, if I remenber it all, you had 5 qts of "coffee with cream" oil drain out after you got it. Severe corrosion on the metal bits, pipes, thermostat housing... If it is the rod bearings, It's probably from running with coolant in the oil. The engine has what 75,000 miles on it? Now what, huh? A Loyale JDM SPFI EA=82 may be an option for you from a local source. Or look here:http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi Or
  4. " I don't know anything about carburetors."
  5. You might go through front tires at a rapid rate in front wheel drive. I had a front wheel drive '87 GL EA-82 that was hard on front tires. It was a stripper, so it didn't weigh all that much tho. Doug
  6. Yea, something a lot of people don't consider with a dealer: The cost of just opening the doors every morning. It could be 2K or 4K, or whatever. Someone might then say, "Well, they're not going to get that from me". I say, there's no one twisting your arm. Doug
  7. "Rebuilt Title. I have the title. Was a small fender bender when it was brand new" Here's what I thought. I don't believe "a small fender bender" recieves a "Rebuilt Title". Isn't an R title the same as "Totaled"?. "The bad. Our mechanic said it needed new head gaskets it has 200k miles on it. So we paid a small fortune to have them replaced, Along with the timing belts and dampener pulleys. It ran great for a month or so and died on us. I recently relocated several hundred miles, and I don’t have the cash to throw at it again so I am selling it." I think there is a good chance he's settled with the mechanic. You don't pay "a small fortune" to a shade tree mechanic. "Put the motor back together and drive it for another 200k." Or not. Doug
  8. Yea, it worked for two weeks. "Sometimes the Check Engine Light illuminates because the computer detects misfires. Subaru released an improved spark plug wire set to solve the problem. The ignition coil should also be inspected for carbon tracks or short circuits between the contacts."
  9. Hi, The fourth wire is red and at this moment, I forget how it's used. All I've ever used/needed is the three wire setup. You would have to find out what that red wire does to piggyback it to something else. No, you don't need the four wire setup to make the carb work. When you get them side by side you'll see how easy it is. Doug
  10. Ha. He did email me and said he'd remove the Honda references on the page. You can swap your 3 pin harness with Bowl vent solenoid, AD switch, and choke wire on to the reman. If you want to swap the new Bowl vent solenoid and choke wire into your 3 pin it's easy. Just pop the pins out of the square 4 pin connector an into the 3 pin. Doug
  11. Yea, eBay. The extra wire goes to the Anti-dieseling switch. I've reused the old AD switch in a reman before. And the old harness. Transfer the stuff around to get what you need.
  12. Hi, That reman, ebay. I emailed just to make sure it's the carb I think it is. No response yet. I used those three on different cars and I don't think I paid more than $125.00 for any of them. One was a Justy, the others EA-82. All sold now. Doug
  13. Hi 3crows, I've bought three reman carbs for around $100.00+. I only know of one right now, and it's $190.00 shipped. They do pop up every now and then. Doug
  14. I use a Honda 13 hp, 4000psi pressure washer. Then a lot of compressed air to blow out the electrical, and rags to wipe it down. It will remove paint if i'm not carefull with it. Doug
  15. Hey, Exactly. But even if it is .0003, if he would just install the crank with new bearings and give it a spin, he'd be at a go/no go situation. If it spins freely he could just move on and forget about .0003. If needed, a good used crank can't be "that" expensive. A reman with rod and main bearings can be found for a couple hundred. Doug
  16. Hi, A bent crank can cause the uneven wear you're seeing. Excessive main bearing clearance on a high mileage motor can cause a bent crank. A bad harmonic balancer can too. I've never reused a truely bent crank, as they usually have other problems as well. That is, a crank that actually has binding issues when it's installed in the block with new bearings. Doug
  17. Well, it might have been GL's with EJ swaps that were never finished. NM Doug
  18. Hey, You're saying this EJ has 300K on it? If it does...well, does it? The crank...What you can do, could have done before you fully broke it down: With just the crank and oiled bearings in the block, spin the crank. It should spin free, and continue spinning when you take your hand off it. You may be able to see it binding, or not. Doug
  19. Hey, Couldn't they hire a driver and still save money? A lot of folks out of work. Doug
  20. Hey, Before you move on from this car, consider this: You can see and drive the car, no? How much are they asking? If it checks out good by driving and looking at it, it's probably worth fair market value. They replaced the pistons so there may not be any piston slap to deal with. When you put new pistons and rings in one, the measurements of the piston ring to ring land clearance will be within OEM spec. It's the most important measurement in the motor. Say factory spec is .0012 to .003 with a max allowed of say .0059. The .0012 to .003 is considered good as new, and it is. .003 to .0059 is rebuilt territory. At least take it for a drive? HTH Doug
  21. Hi, Note that it's $1995.00 and no where do they claim it's "remanufactured". Doesn't mean it's not a good engine tho, I don't know. They do at least use new pistons. I've seen "remanufactured" ones sell for $3 K plus, with a 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty.
