  1. "Unfortunately, the serial number was wiped off when I did a good engine degreasing years ago when I bought the car. Those carbs must be made out of soft metal." Well the serial number...For want of a better description, the ones I've looked at seemed to be printed in ink. Not durable at all. Soft metal? Don't know what that means. With old carbs the metal can deterioriate, along with the finish. I've never been able to refinish a carb at home. If it's that bad I'd just replace it. If it's that bad and the throttle shafts are worn too, well, you don't have much left but a core. Often you can't just put a kit in one and expect it to function as designed. With a reman carb you just bolt it on and go, you'd be good for years. Here's a DCP-306-21 for instance. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150340915934&viewitem=&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2&category=33550 BTW, the throttle/base plate would cost me about $100.00 shipped. But compared to this at RockAuto: 1987 SUBARU GL 1.6L 1595cc H4 2BBL (2) : Fuel/Air : CarburetorPriceCoreTotalUNITED REMAN. Part # SUB169 w/Plas. Choke; Fed. Mdl. Hitachi; Exc. Calif.* Non-stock item--shipping delayed up to 2 business days$456.79$75.00$531.79 It's not so bad. Anyway, hth. with decisions. Doug
  2. Hi, You didn't say which engine or carburetor you have on the hatch... Rebuilt Subaru "throttle chambers" are available. Rebushed shaft and all. Try rupair in Boulder Co., about $75.00 I believe. That is, if you need one. Complete remanufactured Hitachi carbs show up at discount with ebay too. $200.00 or less at times. If you rebuild one, I recommend you get a new power valve as they don't come with any kits I know of. Just some thoughts for consideration. The Hitachi is not so bad when it's right. Whether Weber or Hitachi reminds me of the old Holley or Rochester disputes. The Rochester Quadrojet is a good carb too, when it's right. Have you ever installed a kit in a carburetor? Sounds like you need this to be low budget. Doug Edit: Does your Hitachi look like this inside?
  3. I haven't noticed in recent years what's running around the US with factory blowers. Well, there's the GM stuff...Mercedies, I'll have to look around. Last blower motor I drove and maintained was a 3-71 Detroit Diesel. So it's been awhile. Doug
  4. While reading about electro-magnetic clutches I found this: http://autospeed.com/A_110294/cms/article.html Food for thought. Doug
  5. Hi GD, That's good to know they're out there, but how many are "really good"? No crunched syncros, solid bearings, seals...that sort of thing. A lot of what's out there has been run through the mill. High mileage stuff. Pretty soon you mix new parts with about three transmissions to get a good one or something. Been there, done that with Muncie 4 speeds. To fix one of these with abuse/high mileage would take some new syncros, bearings, seals...whatever. Thanks, have all I need for now, but you neverknow. Doug
  6. Hey, " Well, that sucks. Sounds like I'm back to adapting to an EA series transmission." Yea but, there's only so many of those. How many left that are "really good" transmissions? Well, I've got 2 that are, but I hardly ever see another around here these days. Doug

  8. Hey, Here's four. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-NEW-WINTERHANDLER-ICE-SNOW-185-80-13-TIRES-82368_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4ceaf12418QQitemZ330359186456QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Looks like they're probably NOS. Doug
  9. http://www.ordi-service.net/justy300/Justy300hp.wmv Hot off the press:)
  10. Hey Nipper, " my area, British Columbia Canada" he wrote, and it sounds like he's talking about the same Justy I'm talking about. The oil pump fix new is about $400.00. Genuine Subaru. That's the problem, the cost of parts. Or have a local machinist install a bushing in the original cover and use a new oil pump and shaft. If he finds one in running good condition, that's the best. I have one of those. I have another I'm going to have bushed, and it will probably last a 100K miles. Yea, the only problem with Justy is the cost, IMHO. Doug
  11. Hey, Just some thoughts. It's said the EA-63 and Justy share a clutch. The flywheel bolt holes for the DR trans are wider than the Justy crank bolt holes. It looks to me like a person could egg the flywheel bolt holes out [in actually] and it would bolt on. Adaptor plate, use the front driveshaft from the DR, modify to fit. The MPFI 9 valve is 73 cid. 73 hp, 71 ft. lbs torque. It shares a fuel pump and injecters with the early imprezza and forester. ... Doug
  12. "Does anyone make a good and strong electric impact wrench for those of us without an air compressor?" Something like this would serve you well I believe. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/kobalt-1-2-120v-420ft-lb-impact-wrench-used-once_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQhashZitem4398d2b8f3QQitemZ290326755571QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools
  13. Some thoughts from experience. It doesn't lug because it's programmed to go around peak torque nearly instant, so it's able to pull the lower drive gears. Ds, that's DriveSport mode with the ECVT in the Justy is programmed to rev at 3000 rpm nearly instant with a press of the gas. That puts it in peak power/torque range. It's the next best thing to a dual range tranny if you haven't got one of those, IMHO. Oh, Subaru doesn't recommend changing the fluid in the new CVT "unless" under severe driving conditions, something like that:eek: Not sure if I made any sense at all:) Doug
  14. Hey, " Plastic, intakes ," Yea, I saw that. People will be replacing their intakes on Subaru's for the first time. Say it ain't so, but it is. The reason they did it was something like:"The plastic intake saves weight and the car gets better fuel mileage and be faster with the reduced weight, over aluminum". I kid you not, thet's what I read, something like that. It "IS" cheaper to produce. Doug
  15. Hi, "Any one have any good solutions? After market parts? IDK. I just want it to look good. Thanks!" A new girl friend. Doug
  16. Hey, You get two OEM NOS EA-82 T engines? Or are they rebillds? Doug
  17. Hey, "I chicken out before the engine does." Well as long as it runs clean, I've never hurt one. I'm thinking the upper limit is the point where the valve springs lay down. I'm not positive tho. All EA-82's I've had would do 7 to 7250 before you hear why you need to back off. Low range on mud, full throttle power shifts to 7250 are fun:) Especially with a light car. The gear changes come very quick tho. Doug
  18. Hi, "but it looks to me that it would be the same passage that feeds the exhaust lifters and yet they stay pumped up just fine..." Well, don't assume that. Look in a service manual for the oil flow chart. That will tell you what gets oil first, so on and so forth. It's probably a priority mains engine...main bearings first to get oil. It does sound like an oil pressure problem. Doug
  19. I looked and didn't see this posted yet. 2.0 Turbo with CVT. http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2009/09/30/479618.html Doug
