My wife's cousin just bought a '05 WRX EJ20 turbo with 150k on the clock. Since it had so many miles on it already, first thing i told him to do is to get the timing done on it. I was trying to get the dealer to do the timing before selling the car but he wouldnt budge. But did say that we could bring the car back and they would do it. I told him (my wife's cousin) that I could do the timing, no problem, and would likley be a LOT cheaper than what the stealership would charge. To keep my price competitive.. i called the dealer to see how much they would charge if we just brought it in. The guy said 695+tax (325-parts, 370 in labor). JUST 700 BUCKS?! I was sure to ask what all was being replaced, he said: belt, tensioners, pulleys and Water pump. 700 BUCKS?! Can this be right?? I cant do better than 415 in parts with just the timing kit and a water pump-not including fluids! Am i crazy? or is the dealer doing something wonky and probably would charge more after they already have the car? edit: by the way, its not a "subaru" dealership. Its "Automotive Avenues", sells cars and have their own service dept.. -Justin

ok, so i tried the *other* black with blue stripe. no go. I did a bit more research and found a Yellow/Red wire? It says at the ignition module. I was thinking the ECU? I found one on the ECU, no good. I know the tach works.. wthell? is there something else i'm supposed to do? am i supposed to be in +6 cyl mode to make it work? -Justin

Well, i found a Black/Blue stripe wire coming out of the ECU.. nada as far as a signal. I didnt see one out of the cruse control though.. there was a little box with about 8 or so wires coming out of it that wasnt labeled.. IT had a black/blue wire.. i'll try that later. Anyone know anything else to try? I'm trying to find a FSM for my car.. the one i saw earlier was more '96 WRX goo.. not mine.. -Justin

So a friend of mine gave me a 5" auto meter memory tach. I installed it in my '95 Imp. 2.2. E only problem is its showing about half of what the stock one is. 2k on the stock is only 1k on the auto meter, 4k on the stock is about 2k on the auto meter. As per the instructions, I wired it all right. I even clipped the 6 and 8 cyl. Wires to allow for a 4 cyl. Did I wire it to the right signal wire? I tried (I from memory, please forgive me) the 2 outter wires, not st the same time obviously, at the coil pack with the same results. am I going at it the wrong way? I'm used to using the tach wire as a signal that the car is on for alarms, not for actual accurate readings... -Justin

Shawn, Have you been to that UPAP lately? I was thinking of going up there on tuesday to see about that glass.. how much do they charge for just the glass do you know? and maybe a fuel gauge? -Justin -
That IS tempting, though I would like something that is always on in the car. the only problem is (from what i've read) is there is limated BluetoothODBII hardware that works with iPhones.. which is what i have. Just as the topic says. I have a late '95 Impreza WITH a ODBII plug. (I know its ODBII, it tells me secrets). My question is, would it tell me the things I want to know? Biggest thing that is making me doubt is the fact that it is a early ODBII computer. Would it even tell me what i want. RPM, Fuel consumption, coolant temperature, engine speed, horsepower? Anyone? Bueller? -Justin

ok, Initially, My fuel gauge would dip slowly while i was sitting at a light. Once i applied any power to the engine, either by driving or "N" revving it would climb once again, this would happen sometimes once a week. In another thread, I was having a problem that lead to my MAP sensor (P0107), i asked if it could be related to my fuel gauge, someone suggested tightening the terminals behind the gauge. After doing so, my gauge climbed to full.. but before i did it, it was working fine and was showing 1/2 tank. I looked at the terminals again and it went to empty. I took the gauge out and looked at the coil and maybe on tightening i broke a coil wire? now it just sits at past empty. It pushes itself there if you turn the needle, it'll push itself back to past empty. The new gauge works, at the moment at least. Even though the one on the dash shows past empty. edit: the new gauge is attached with 3 wires attached to the terminals behind the existing fuel gauge in the dash. -Justin

Well, the new gauge works, and I don't have the same problem with it as I did with the one that is in the dash currently. I was mostly interested on how to repair my screw up with the instrument gauge in the dash. Initially, it worked just fine just would dip low after a while. (the new one does not) But after i mucked with it it doesn't work. Not to turn away the information with the sending unit. Good information to have, and I'll probably try it just to get it out of the way. edit: and by new gauge, i mean the one I swiped out of another subaru and have the leads ran to behind the existing gauge in the dash. Pictured above. -Justin

Well, i tried the additional fuel gauge to see if that'll work. at first I wasn't sure if it did because it also read "E". I filled my tank up this morning and it did spike up to near Full. I'm assuming because the sending wire is, attempting at least, to power 2 gauges that it wont give a full reading? better than nothing! Until i get one to replace the one in the dash! -Justin

So I was having a problem with my fuel gauge dipping low while at idle. Someone told me to just tighten up the screws on the back and it should be good. Not so much. First attempt, it Spiked to full tank. Second attempt, it dropped to empty. While i was doing this, i did notice that the "-" just kept spinning. it wasnt until I took the gauge off that i realized that i likely spun the coil wire off the end cap. has anyone tried repairing a fuel gauge? I tried to go to the JY and find a cluster that i could just swap out but, at least the one near my house, didnt have any Imprezas. I did manage to take one out of a similar year Legacy. Could I just put some wires on the terminals and just run it to the new gauge? will that work? Also, If i were to just buy a aftermarket fuel gauge, would it work? or is there anything special that I would need to do to make it work? -Justin
