Here's something new that I haven't run into before. So the other night my wife and I were watching a movie and all of a sudden I look out, and my Jeep's Headlights are on! Now, naturally, I assume someone broke in and was trying to drive off I grab my keys and "baby monitor" (Viper 791xv with 2-way), notice the alarm didn't go off, and run out the door. Then, the lights turn off. I run up to the Jeep and no-one is in it. So I'm thinking "am i nuts?" i asked someone that was driving by and they said "yea, the lights were on" so i sit there for a minute or so and sure as hell, the lights turn on! Interresting. Has anyone else had this issue before? Its a 2000 Grand Cherokee. Now i know there is a photo cell on the dash that turns the lights on for me maybe there's a short in it? Also, occassionally, when i turn on the blinkers (left in particular) the lights turn on. now, i tossed that off as a short in the switch but how are they turning on even when nothing is happening? the car had been sitting there for probably a good 3 or 4 hours. Input? -Justin

Pretty slick install. Now to make it pretty in the back. Oh, and you might think of bolting your sub down. Makes it harder for people to steal it. Or, and this is what i did.. Build a shelf in the back. Unless you have the pull curtain... Keeps honest people honest... if they cant see it they don't know its there :-D Oh, i found some pics of an old install i did on my first 'roo http://mo-power.net/site/camera/phone-shot/09282005/ http://mo-power.net/site/camera/random/car/ -Justin

Thats actually a pretty decent radio. Its nice to find something that goes into a stock location without much, if any, modifications. -Justin -
How to improve power/mpg on EA82?
crazyman03 replied to smallwwb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
from my experience, I Kept it simple. Get some decent spark plugs, air filter, keep up with the maintenance and don't drive it like a retard. Hypermiling works too especially on the 5speeds. You can take out the belt driven fan and put a electrical one in there. i think the mounts are there anyway even if its not there. on the left side (looking into the engine bay). I've seen mine (88 GL SPFI) get 30's mixed driving and 35-(sometimes)39MPG Highway. Corse that's practically flat hills and taking it easy up hills. That's what i got on my last trip to Wyoming, Denver to Cheyenne, Casper then Rawlins 1 tank, Rawlins, rock springs then Evanston 1 tank, than 1 tank back from evanston.. and i still had a couple gallons left. -Justin -
Thats a nice looking amp. I havent done much with installing in my 'roo. I dont want to put too much money in this one.. at most, offroading gear. I never thought of putting the 6x9s in that cubby. thats a good idea too. Ya know what you could do, build a wall on both sides, relocate the 6x9's up a bit and you'd have a bit more room. same idea as before.. more than likly you'd have to take the entire side trim and re-do it. i donno, I'm stingy when it comes to where i can and cannot put tools especially when the car practically comes with its own tool box. Just an idea. Under the seats work. but you have to watch it when people get in the back with wet feet. I did it on my jeep but i have a cubby under the back seats. Pic: album: http://albums.mo-power.net/?get=albums&id=167 I've done it with my old GL-10, (under the front seats) but i play with my amps too much and they are hard to get to.. that and i like to show them off. -Justin

pretty nifty setup. 'corse this is probably too late into it but. I installed my amps in the rear side storage panels. origionally (when i had a smaller amp) i just installed it right in there.. but when i got a bigger one i made a door on the side and mounted them right in there and had a little show door on the side. no cargo area loss and airflow? i put fans on the sides in the cubby and put the exhaust fan on the side facing the tail lights. I wish i had a picture.. i'm sure i have one laying around here somewhere but thats always an option too.. that and you can have both amps in a similar area and you dont have to worry about tools banging up your amps -Justin

Fuses For Original Speakers?
crazyman03 replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There isnt really a fuse when it comes to the speakers. I've blown the amps in radio's a few times. The radio caries on like nothing happened because the part where it supplies the sound is a completely different set of circuitry. You could try this.. try and find another stock radio, if you still want it to remain stock looking and put it in. unless something happened to the wiring of the doors or behind the radio. the speakers should come on. HOWEVER, speakers do just *poof* go out. especially 24 year old speakers. thats why it would be beneficial to test the speakers. replacing them isnt hard.. they are 6.5inch rear doors and 4 inch fronts apparently according to crutchfield.com. so what i would do is either find another stock stereo and test it out in there, or take the speakers out and test them. if you do go the route of replacing the speakers, you can keep the stock look. you dont need to use the grille that comes with the speakers. just mount them behind the door panel. -Justin -
Fuses For Original Speakers?
crazyman03 replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i spent 30 bucks on my pioneer deck, and 20 bucks in door speakers. they arent expensive. as far as road noise.. dang! I thought i got a lot. you could dampen it if you really wanted to i wouldnt on that car.. especially if you dont care about it that much. if you do, get grace ice/water sheild. its a cheaper alternitive.. works well.. put a couple layors of that under the carpet that'll quiet it up a bit. I bought a roll of that a while back on craigslist for 80 bucks for a 100ft roll. new probably 150? -Justin -
Fuses For Original Speakers?
crazyman03 replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
its possible.. you could've blown the amp. I have done this.. Not much fun. Usually there's like 2 built into the stereo. one for the front and one for the rear channels. but if its the stock stereo they did things 24 some odd years ago a lot simplier. There isnt really a "fuse" for speakers you either blow them or the radio. what you can do to double check this is take the speakers out, or just one, and take it inside and test it on a working radio, Theater or just something that you can easily unplug a speaker and plug the car one into. It wont hurt anything. If the speaker works, then you have your answer. -Justin -
How to replace a EA82 dashboard?
crazyman03 replied to Vanishing Boy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you might try vinyl paint.. tape off what you don't want colored and go that way. but either way you are going to need to clean the current dash.. -Justin -
Well, there /is/ a couple easy ways and a hard way to do this. 1 easy way would be to get said tape adapter for a working deck and run it that way. I've done it.. and it works quite well, even if the motor doesn't spin inside the tape deck. OR you can get a FM Transmitter and run that. As far as FM Transmitters go.. they make simple plug and play ones, and they make complex ones. Both work well, its just a matter of how much you like your deck ;-). The complex ones actually go in-line with the antenna connector that plugs into the back of the radio, tune to the specified station and No interference. When you turn the deck on, the Transmitter turns on and just plug your MP3 player into its Audio Input. The plug and play ones you can get as a Walmart special. You simply put batteries into it, plug into your MP3 player and tune the radio. (if you really wanted, and i've done this too, you can hard-wire the plug and play one too with the proper voltage adapters) As far as interfacing the mp3 to the plug that works for the tape deck.. I've never tried that. If you have some time on your hands, a DMM, and a bit of an imagination.. You probably could get it to work. all you really need to find from the plug is -,+ Left and -,+ right audio channels. it might have a common ground for them so be sure to check for that. This also is assuming that the factory deck receives the audio that way, I'm sure it does. -Justin

best movie... ever lol -Justin -
I cant for the life of me think of anything else but i know its all good. everything is strait, cleaned. Both bearings are new, packed. hub was cleaned before being put back on, new CV, Brand new rotors, pads are new. I was thinking maybe alignment was off.. but that wouldnt make much sense either.. i'm really at a loss. If I put a new-ish hub on there how would it change? -Justin

Hate to bring this up again.. but I'm getting the same clicking and shaking as i was getting a while ago. I was hoping that buying new rotors and pads would fix it but it seems like it didnt do much at all. Anyone got any ideas as to what else i could do? This car is seriously starting to Irritate the crap out of me .. HELP!! -Justin
-
Well, last Tuesday I replaced both rotors and Pads on the 'roo. for the first couple days seemed great, stopped strait, no shaking, stopped hard too . Then, today, I was coming home from work and I hear the same clicking/popping. not as often though. but it shakes the steering too again. I've replaced the rotors, Pads, CV axle, what else could it be? -Justin

still +1 on the fan situation. I've had an almost exact situation and all i did was get a new fan going. and as edrach said, its a cheaper fix. Heck, just hit up a junkyard and find either type fans - electric or pulley driven. Both will/should mount right up. even if you don't have a pulley driven one, you can take the cap off the pulley and slap the fan right on the water pump pulley. (I suspect you have a electric fan because its overheating when you stop. pulley driven one always runs) -Justin
