+1 Do you have a Electric fan or a mechanical fan? I had an electric one that went out on me and didn't realize it. Car would sit for a bit and eventually bubble over. T-stat was fine.. but if there isnt anything cooling the radiator the coolant cant cool off. Check to see what kind of fans you have going. since it only heats up when you are sitting, that seems to me that you don't have a fan going... -Justin

My GLadys adventures! (TONS of pics!)

No, least not that i could see. I mostly liked it because *if* you broke a belt, you have a secondary one already there. -Justin -

I wouldnt worry too much about removing the drive shaft. I've towed these many-a-times without removing the drive shaft. worked out fine:rolleyes:.. My old '89 GL had the same pully system.. no A/C either. i rather liked the double belt system too:rolleyes:. It looks good! nice find! -Justin -

Oil Pressure question
crazyman03 replied to crazyman03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Engine temp has not gone up, not leaking any oil, and not burning it. Exhaust smells good too. Oil is normal colored, coolant is green. the engine did kinda buck at me a few times this morning but that was it. -Justin -
So I have an interesting situation. I've had this issue before but don't remember what the issue was. I've been driving around for a couple days now and noticed my oil pressure gauge says a big fat zero. Naturally i would assume 1 of 2 things.. the gauge is bad or the pump itself actually went kaput. I was going to get one of those manual psi gauge and drill it in to confirm weather or not the gauge is bad. I know there is oil in the engine, and i *knock on wood* haven't seized. I added a quart just for giggles and noticed that the guage went up. so it is working. I noticed before that when i change the oil, the guage comes back.. so my question i guess is this - is my pump going out? or what does anyone think is going on? -Justin

Complete shot in the dark

spend the extra money. Don't get your heart set on what you find at the salvage yard. You'd be suprised what you can get out of some good door speakers. Mid/High Range speakers make all the difference when it comes to car audio. Having too much bass simply sounds like crap - cant hear much for words, you get a big headache just listening to it. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. If you just want sound, you can go with the Walmart special $20 speakers. Or, (and I'm not saying you need to do this) spend 70 or so on a decent set. Personally, component speakers sound way better than 2 or 3-way speakers (the sets that have the tweeter external from the mid-range cone) especially when it comes to the front of a vehicle. You can put the mid speaker in the door and put the tweeter on the dash firing up or on the pillar firing inwards. with component systems you can get a bit creative when it comes to sound. If you find a decent midrange set, you can *almost* get as good as having a sub. now, you cant quite get AS good as with having a sub because midrange speakers cant quite get as low frequency as sub-woofers can but still.. anyway, sorry to get all technical. Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Unless its a killer deal then thats different -Justin -
Lets see.. one of the stupidest things I've done.. well thats a list long.. i'd have to say the most memorable ones are... 5 or so years ago i was changing the oil on a neighbor's car.. Little Saturn thing.. pop the plug off.. and get started on the filter. Wrench, Wrench, Wrench. Not coming off. The Filter was starting to buckle and bend, which wasnt much of a concern since it was being replaced. Finally get it to budge and .. wait for it.... it was the Transmission filter. . Never delt with a filter that was outside the transmission. Figured well crap! go get a new tranny filter and finish with the oil change.. Another one.. I was changing the water pump on my GL, and aparently you need to take the timing cover completly off, which means you have to remove the crank pulley. Not a problem! I have a BF-Bar in one hand wedging the pulley from spinning. and the wrench in the other hand. SNAP! Pulley cracks right down the middle.. still not off either! after finally removing it, i had to hitch a bus ride to Colorado auto parts to find another one. *DOH!* -Jusitn

87 GL Wagon PAINTED but Wont turn over :(
crazyman03 replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like there is a bit more going on than just the starter. Granted, I would say the starter is the reason why it wasn't starting. But alternators too, can be rather funky. If/When you notice your voltage needle jumping/falling again, double check the voltage at the battery and at the alternator. The alternator could be going out as well. Its a very common thing to go out on these 'roo's. When you check the voltage, have someone (or yourself) rev up the engine. the voltage on the dmm should do the same as your dash needle. if not, then your voltage indicator is going out. I've had dirty connections do this too. cleaning it may have just fixed the problem. If the voltage regulator cant get a good reading from the battery as to weather or not its getting/keeping a charge, It will "full-field" itself to keep up with the demand. dirty connections will give an improper reading. -Justin -
Skid plate saves the day (not how you think)
crazyman03 replied to Gloyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ha! that's some luck right there! and a pretty decent battery too.. to carry you another 14 miles that's pretty decent! -Justin -
Here's the axle assembly. I was going to try and take it apart before work this morning but didnt get around to it. -Justin
-
Yes and Yes. There is a motion in the wheel while braking. As well as a bit of pulsing in the petal. I was going to try and get another vid when i got to work but now (oh the fun continues) neither are happening, when i soft brake or when i hard brake. I just went out and tried again and couldn't get the wheel shaking but i did a walk around the car while it was going and was able to get a bit of clicking. It was coming from the passenger front. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgkvxHhtMso -Justin

I'm almost positive its the front passenger side. That's where all the sound comes from at least. If i have the windows down and drive past something I hear it on that side. (least louder on that side).. and while braking it sounds louder on the floorboard by that fender.:-\ I thought maybe the rim could be insanely out of balance? or maybe even bent? It would explain the vibration... but I only get the vibration while braking.. and not while driving strait. I donno.. I was half tempted to just replace the rotors and pads here in a couple weeks (payday) and start from there.. Checker's has a deal on rotors for $20/each.. least online. I just hate throwing new parts at a problem and not finding the actual problem ya know? -Justin

I will take a picture of the hub nut and washer stuff tomorrow. The washers didn't look bad at all. I did the CV axle on that side recently too (it was rubbing this same way even before i replaced the CV). I Replaced the CV thinking that the axle was on its way out, it snaped anyway so i figured well hey perfect time to replace it. Didn't make much of a change, if any. So I replaced the bearings, both the inner and outter, same thing - No change. I inspected the old bearings and they were actually in pretty decent shape. no real abnormal wear at all, spun ok, the carrier bearing was in good shape too.. and nothing had any heat cracks or even any discoloration at all.. -Justin

I still am having this issue. The grinding, sometimes, gets louder. I got a couple videos. its only when stopping that you can hear the grinding.. anyone??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AKRwDLYR8Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8GTrzgtXM0 you can only hear it when stopping. particularly when applying the brake.. I double checked the calipers and pads.. both pads are in decent shape.. the router seems alright too.. nothing grinding away at it.. -Justin
