1988 GL rear locking up
crazyman03 replied to crazyman03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
curious, is the transfer case necessarily bad? Is there anything i could possibly do to fix it aside from replacing it? -
1988 GL rear locking up

I did this and the bearings seemed alright. No grinding. i even checked the diff. But when i did this.... it came out of 4wd. So I'm thinking that the Transfer case was causing the drive-shaft to lock up which was causing the rear to lock up. Now all i need is to figure out where i can find a radiator for cheap. Also. do the ea82 alternator usually have the voltage regulator built into it? -

Actually, i still haven't been able to disengage the 4wd. That's why I'm still tossed between the diff and the t-case. -

hmm, I'll look at it tonight. Sadly I'm at work right now and can't work on it. I wanted to get a few ideas going so that i have a plan of attack when i get there. would there be a easy way of checking the berrings without pulling it? I tried a "pull test" on the tires and they seemed solid. -

well, to me its a loyale. my first 3 subies were loyale's so the gl body looks just the same. -

actually, from what I've noticed, it was just the driver's rear. It occasionally locks up... not entirely, just enough to chirp the tire a bit. i was thinking perhaps that because there is tension on the drive line that could be the reason why its not coming out of 4. curious, would there be a vacuum with the "4-wheel shifter" i always thought they were directly linked to the transfer case. -
So last night i bought myself my 4th Loyale. It is not in too bad of shape. Not too much body cancer, 5-speed, needs a bit of body work, and a new radiator. I took it for a quick test drive and it handled well, as usual, but when i popped it into 4-hi, 1, it wouldn't come back out of it.. 2, my rear locks up occasionally. My question is oh mighty humble Subaru guru's! . Do i have a bad Transfer case, or a bad rear diff? like i said, it didn't start locking up until after i put it into 4-wheel. I haven't looked at it completely yet. I was going to start by removing the drive shaft and see if the rear still locks up. can anyone think of anything else? Thanks! Edit: its a GL not Loyale

i've come across a little black box too. i just figured it was something to do with the electronic mirrors in the car mainly because it had a bunch of wires leading up to the controls, and i didnt look to far into it. the install that i've done on all my subies worked out with leaving it in the dash, however, shoving it up behind the glovebox. I got a install "dash" kit from circuit city. They didnt have a wire harness so i had to make-shape one for myself. PICS!:: (edit: on a side note this picture is of a Loyale. I didnt have a picture of my other car but it had the same install kit. It didn't have a "trip computer")

Look What I Found... (Update Pics on Page 3)
crazyman03 replied to I)arkZrobe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heck yea that is exactly what i was looking into for my gl-10. -
rightfully so. I got all the bearings, the pisten rings. and a gasket kit for all of the above that could have a o-ring or gasket. hope to put it together here soon.
-
wow, this got filled up quickly. so i am going to go with keeping the heads the way they are and if they screw up oh well i can get another. on a side note I'm getting new bearings for the crank. (main and pisten bearings) mainly because since i'm inside there i might as well replace 'em. so yea thanks for the input. i'm hoping for my car to be up and running soon. Provided the tranny isn't screwed up. (the previous owner really screwed up this car)

there's a shop in town that says they can repair the cracks... is it even worth trying to repair? also, When i called around there were some people who said they had them for 130/each would they be cracked too or what should i expect?
-
so i've searched all around denver for the heads for my new car. Everywhere i've looked the heads are cracked between the valves. is this a common thing for the heads to crack like that? i've had a subie ever since they let me behind the wheel but i've never gotten this far into the block. any ideas?
-
Anywho, so my friend and i cracked open the block and all of the above are bad with the thing. Found that the rings are beyond blown (they were actually not even there). Both head gaskets were shot. 2 exhaust valves were open. (the seal broke off and stuck it open) the turbo Gaskets were leaking. and the timing cover was melted. among other things. i got more pictures up mostly of the interrior but there are engine pictures in there too. :Flame:http://dt.milehighdance.com/site/camera/my%20subie%20buid/

i'm hoping for the best. My roomate and I are going to be ripping it apart here this weekend. A lot of the gaskets and seals are blown so we're going to look into everything about it since i dont know a thing about this car, except that it looks in good shape.
-
heh, not me doing the bending. i got the car from a junkyard and wanted to see what all i was getting into before getting my hopes up.
-
yes, i tooo hate the digi-dash cluster. My other subie has the analog cluster. i'm hoping that i can just pull all that stuff out of my other one to make one nice subie. i doing some compression tests to this new subie and might have a valve bent because i'm getting like 10 pounds in a coupple of my cylenders. i'm still begging for a gasket issue. but we'll find out as the project moves on. edit: as for the rims i dont have any. i have some in mind that are pretty nice. but at the moment when this car is done i'm stealing the ones off my other subie.
-
I'm pretty stoked about this, its a '88 GL-10 Turbo. With the FT 4wd. i got some pictures. http://dt.milehighdance.com/site/camera/my%20subie%20buid/

yeah i'll try a different guague but i dont think that i'm leaking anywhere. its just that i lose pressure.. and it'll stay at 0. but then when its at 45 it stays there for a while then drops to 0. then when it is at 85 it stays there.. untill i turn off the engine.
-
well hehe i'm not going to steal them off someone else's car.. more like a junk yard..
-
dang, i see all this i want to do it bad. where to find the RX to steal them from
-
hmm.. nice! i was looking for something along those lines..
-
i am having issues with my oil pressure guague. either that or i'm actually having an issue with the engine. i have a 1987 subaru GL and when i start the car up i get 84 lbs of pressure and occationally it'll go back down to 48. but then occationally i'll get 0 pressure, but the engine proformance will be just the same as it would normally would.. i remember my old subie giving me 0 pressure but never gave me enigine problems either.. any suggestions?
-
whereabouts did you find the skirts? also, the hood did that come off the RX too?
