  1. I believe MT-90 is also a 75w90 oil (and MTL is thinner,) but MTL and MT-90 are both GL-4 lubricants and are not recommended for Subarus because the hypoid front differential is part of the tranny and shares the same lubricant. Apparently the hypoid gears need the differently formulated GL-5. That leaves 75w90 and 75w140. I don't think one would ever want to use the heavier oil in our cars in any environment but definately not a cold one. When you first got rolling in the mourning each shift would take minutes!
  2. I'm troubleshooting my own trans/clutch rumbling noise and a few searches have confused me with what seems like conflicting information. (Also, is it proper etiquette is to start my own thread or continue this one.) and from http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30232 My rumbling goes away with the clutch about halfway depressed. It's really loud at a cold start with the clutch pedal released in neutral. I think it is quieter (again in neutral with the clutch pedal out) after being driven. It's a '96 legacy brighton with 173K mi. on the original clutch (is that possible? I bought the car used with 70K.) FWIW I have been pretty faithful with preventative maintenance and most recently changed the gear oil @ 140K with Valvoline synthetic 75w 90. I just checked the level and it is still at the Full line.
  3. Hi, I have a 96 Legacy Brighton that needs new brake shoes. I had been bookmarking the "disc upgrade" threads but at the moment I don't have the time and the shoes should be replaced. Is a high performance brake shoe available, or is that just a contradiction in terms? FWIW, these brakes feel fairly adequate for how the car is driven 99% of the time. My motivation for wanting to upgrade is more fueled by the fact that I remember the (four wheel disc) brakes in my last legacy being noticeably stronger than the brakes in this car.
