New Addition! Picture warning.
moosens replied to waimaks's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Rock 'n freakin Roll Baby!!!!!!!!!! Nice score!!!! That second gen wheel is for the Leone's. -
Yeah Matt,go for it! So far I've got some patches to give out.Should be able to score more dealer give-away crap too. Maybe we'll raffle off the Subaru/Leasing sign I still have to pick up from the barn near Harrisburg. Might be some chicken feathered headlights from the 70's too. Should we make a flyer to hang in dealer's parts/service depts.?I'm going to try to whip up something.

Yup,kicking it off.Let's throw it around and see who latches on. Biggest gathering on the East Coast of vintage and interseting Import Cars. Edit: PLEASE REGISTER YOUR CAR UNDER THE CLUB NAME "Ultimate Subaru Club" !!!!!!!!!!!! If we get 25 cars registered we get a tent for the weekend FREE. The tent really helps!!! Pardon this post if info is repeated or out of place after this edit.Cheers...... Carlisle Import/Kit-Repli-car Show http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/import/index.asp Third weekend in May every year. Many many thanks to Matt for taking the bull by the horns last year.We all owe him applause and probably at least a few bucks too.Not sure why I never got a collection going like I intended.Matt put out some dough for the tent and I think we should have kicked in some. We'll be sure to butter his roll this year, right? Tough year in the Northeast for alot of us.Regardless,I'm planning on attending. This is a good place many of us to get together on a low budget. The Carlisle area offers plenty of affordable accomodations. And it's an easy one day event for many folks from eastern PA,NJ,lower NY,and even further if you don't mind a few hours of driving. Saturday is THE day to be there if you can. You don't need a Vintage/Historic/Antique/or even Rare Subaru to attend. You are welcome to show up in any car in any condition! There's no competition unless you want to enter into the big show. At this point I have no idea if Matt wants to run the show again or who will take the helm. But we should at least try to see if we have enough people to make the effort for the tent, etc. Either way,I am planning on attending, probably with my son or maybe the whole family. It only cost like $15 to enter your first car and $10 for a second and $5 for a third. Camping on premises is only $15 for a 10' x 30' space -*to Show Entries only*-that means you if you register a car. There's also trailer parking available. Plenty of camping nearby too.If the weather looks a little rough the hotels/motels aren't too bad at all. Some are pricey but there's plenty to shop around.Stay out away from Harrisburg and it gets cheaper. We're hoping to bring the '78 down one more time unrestored :-\ but might bring the '87 Turbo Wagon....we'll see. Hope you can join in.

1400 suspention question?
moosens replied to kiwi subbie's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
They show up on eBay here, and there's a guy with some Konis that I have met at the Carlisle Import Show.He definitely has 1600 series, and I really don't think those would be any different than the 1400's.Not enough to matter,in my opinion.I don't have all my manuals handy right now but I'm 99% sure they mount the same (1400/1600) and aren't much different in length and damper. -

broke this sensor, what is it and will it run?
moosens replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can use foil wrap duct tape to secure the broken stem back on too.Hack job,but that stuff is super strong and you can smooth it around tightly.Worked for me on my old '86.Need to cut small strips and helps to have good dexterity or take it out and do it. Of course,if you have a yard with old Subarus handy...... -

Your're right about the XT,sorry.Forgot about those. But yes, turbos and n/a are different at the flange with the studs/non-studs.At least from my dealer that's the case.Aftermarket, sure you can expect differences from what the dealer has. I've shimmed out the shorter one to suit.Needed longer studs though. We just did this a few months back. -

I vote "turbo vs non turbo" too. Turbo w/p's have no studs on the fan mount flange.N/A w/p's come with studs. -
Definitely mark the carrier to the diff. case before un-doing it. I also have asked a Subaru Mastrer Tech with over 25 years of Subaru under his belt.He says you don't want to over tighten them and at the most you go in ONE tooth for starters, and usually not any more than that.Thats if you have a slight amount of play.If just replacing old seals go back to your mark and don't go in anymore. Just put my quilted flannel in the laundry basket because of that dang gear oil stentch. More warm weather coming tomorrow!!The Northeast never had it so good in January!!
-
Some folks say warm isn't too bad but not when its hot. That give a better chance for threads to stick to the bolt and strip out. Back and forth many times untill you get that space enough to spray PB down there.Still,go back in if you have to often.Break the corrosion and and chipping. Lots of us already have the Heli-coil or Time-sert kit for those.
-
Yes they did. Haven't heard back on the '74.....call or email,etc.,please. Thanks

Sent today: Bryan T Grayson Mike -renaisanceman Jeff -MAV Might have been one more. You guys owe a little something towards shipping or for shipping and the gasket(s). I used FedEx Ground on my account and got great rates.I rounded up the cents or may have tacked a buck or so on for Paypal fee, tape, gas, etc. All things considered you're still not overpaying more than a couple of cents when it all boils down.No profit needed. You guys are all cool for making this happen and WE ALL SAVED BIG MONEY!!!!! Just be sure to come through with the few bucks more needed to complete this circle of love. Gaskets are in boxes for you few and ready to go.the rest of you will be getting the same treatment.Look for emails coming, everyone involved, and please, let's wrap this up quickly. I'd probably be able to handle the next batch if this mops itself up nice 'n quick.Otherwise, maybe Todd or someone else will handle it. One last note.PRP only sent us 24,not 25 so I have credit on my account with them as of this moment. We will need to follow through with the next order soon to secure the price and most important, the availability, and to apply my credit toward a part instead of my credit card. That might mean 26 arriving, one of which is declared mine-paid for. Thanks again, and we'll be in touch with each other soon. Ciao, Paul

How do you install the BRAT rear window?
moosens replied to Scott F's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To remove whole assy.: Usually I have no problem placing one hand on each side of the window and while pressing together lift the end up and down untill you see an oportunity for the window gasket to release from its seat.I think you can get the bottom corner started and pop it out from the lower long edge then it'll fall downward real easy because the top is tapered smaller than the bottom,so gravity rules at that point. You can chose either side, just open a door and like I said place one hand on the inside and one on the outside......lift and seperate. -

Wagonsonly and WagonsonlySR
moosens replied to ShawnW's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Let's hope you have better luck with it than Andrew did. Same here, like Jon,I have plenty of fenders in excellent shape, some NEW,some used. You'd be missing out if you didn't come by my place too,so try to make some time.Requires good weather for the full treatment, but I do have those EXC. Gen I fenders in the hallway storage unit,so even if it's raiing I can get to those.Oh,and there's about half a ton NEW OLD STOCK in there too. My stuff is in Milford CT just off I-95 exit 35.If you go to Jon's first, then Andrew's,you can hit my place on the way home. Depending on the time you come around NYC you might consider the reverse of that order. Be sure to listen for the traffic reports when coming up through NJ or eastern PA if you don't use the I-81 to I-84 method.(880 AM WCBS) -
Old Soob Parts New England?

It should be noted that you missed the greatest place for all old Subaru parts in CT. I closed my workshop up last year.:-\ -
Old Soob Parts New England?
moosens replied to bgd73's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
You've got a board member "junkyardGabe" working a yard in Freeport. There's 2 yards on the same road there.Alling Ridge Rd. I think it is,and it's right off of Rt.1 just east of the tourist trap-L.L.Bean,etc. The first yard has way cool old stuff, but minimal Subarus. Just down the road where Gabe works is more small cars, certainly more Subarus. Damned if I can remember the name of the yard. F & S in Waterbury CT but they're expensive and don't have much 70's/80's anymore. Right now,I mean NOW is a good time to consider coming down to "wagonsonly's" place. He's kind of forced to get rid of some EA81 and EA82 cars. He's in CT right at the Mass. line off I-91 Our man Charlie has a sort of personal yard with tons of EA82 stuff and some EA81. More pockets in CT but they are drying up fast. -
Suggested Spark Plugs, Oil and filters
moosens replied to nathan.chase's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Remember, your manual tells you: "DO NOT USE CHAMPION SPARK PLUGS ON SPFI ENGINES". Like the gang says,NGK all the way! I get a discount so I typically use dealer filters.Oil-been going back to Castrol as a rebelion.Used the expensive Pennsylvania oils, very good, never a problem.Just don't go cheap.Do NOT use Walmart oil,etc..... -
Anybody ever cut this thing off?
moosens replied to BushmasterSI's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
double ditto Sometimes you don't have patience to work from the front or work around it. -
Looks great, but I have never seen one of those on a '75-79 car or Gen I Brat up here.I always thought those were intended for the '80-84 and Gen II Brat and Hatch. Hope to see you at the Pine Barrens again in the next few months.
-
....but,if you use two different style cases you're going to run into needing to swap the air piping or at least the fittings for them. I'm pretty sure the change was in mid-'78.They went to a wider case with an in-block water exchange. How does the water passage look on all three engines? Are they the same?I'm guessing they're not.

got my new 1980 Brat
moosens replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Move this thread to the Historic Forum. Good snag,we'll help you get it in shape. -
Different piping. And the newer style is a wider case. When I get some coffee in me I'll be able to fill in more detail, but you can use either.Just need to transfer air injection pipe fitting....and some small details.

I got mine with a long screwdriver.was able to move the latch and pop it open. Then I rigged up a wire similar to the bass string method. For now I open my hood from in front og the grill where my homemade cable comes out of the grill. When you get it open you should be able to find a new cable.I just got two on eBay recently.
