Drill and tap went easy to say the least. Makita cordless 18v , and large vice grips. Feels good , no rattle , no play. Fed the tube as I cranked it in gently. Had the top loose until I had the bottom well in its way to seated. Of course the test of the work is yet to come. Didn’t use any thread seal. If you think that’s a big mistake let me know before I finish and drop the engine back in, please. They didn’t use anything from the factory best I can see. Now we have a couple or so minor issues. Knock sensor connector is different. And I boxed up all the spares because I was being rushed. Like 2hrs later after boxing I was told I had more time. Grrrr But I’ll dig out the old one and that should take care of that one. Next is another connector/whip which seems to have no destination. So what was it the 2000 had that the 03 didn’t ? Or are my eyes or mind failing me again ? Check the pic I’ll be adding. And then the hose at the rear. Have to guess that’s a smallish PCV but the 2000 block I’m using has a larger port there and is not threaded best I can see. I attempted to remove the one from the outgoing ‘03 block but it seems to only turn but not back out so I’m assuming that’s a press fit. If they backed out I could just swap the housings. See other pics. Edit - finally recalled GD’s early post. See below. Easy enough way around this issue. Just not a lot of time to work today either. Wish I had a full day to just knock this out. Waaaagh.

Thanks again. Stupid question maybe but I have to ask based on a Craigslist posting. Guy says he couldn’t use an automatic engine in his manual Forester I think it was. Maybe 98-99 era ? Is that a reality? Old school it’s just swap bell housings and good to go. This current situation made me think of that posting and unnerved me a bit. Should be back at it later Wednesday and hopefully drill successfully and tap the same. Here’s how life works sometimes. So I found tap wrenches , two of the longer handle type and one smaller T type. Well don’t ya know the largest one I had was still too small. But I’ll manage. Can’t locate just a tap wrench local without buying a kit.

Using my pen size screwdriver I don’t feel anything as an obstruction until about 2” and I want to say the drilled hole ends just a 1/4” before that part I’m bumping into. Without looking I’m guessing a valve guide ?? Anyways , when I drill the other head can I count on that same length of casting material in that area ? So I’m holding off drilling in a full 2” for now , even with the pilot drill.
-
Began drilling with a pilot drill , went in past my tape mark because I didn’t see any cavity/orifice yet. As it turns out the drill I brought with me is 3/8 chuck and need a 1/2 chuck. So at rest for another night. Different heads from the foundry , slight changes in various locations but effectively the same functions. I’ll try to post the differences in pics when I have time but probably nobody cares anyways....but my point is , could these revised or new editions have Less outer casting material there than the older gen ? Otherwise I made progress in other directions. 2003 below 2000 below

9:30am - 2:00pm is the “old lady out and about” time. They’re hitting the hairdresser, groceries, doctor , you get the idea. And you live in New Canaan. If you can make time during that period you do the old leave a note method. I’ve gotten at least three I can vividly recall using that method , and sometimes maybe a face to face encounter too. Got a decent Brat.

Tough up here right now. Folks don’t let them go so fast these days. I do the same thing you’re doing. But to be honest we got lucky with our last two cars bought front a friend and the other from a longtime neighbor. One thing I like to do on Craigslist is select All in For Sale and then type Subaru in the search. Saves bouncing around.

I stopped short of chasing Snap-On or Matco and such but did shop the way I would have when growing up in the machine/tool industry using today’s tech. Ah , but those great suppliers have vanished. Or only carry kits which are up to 16mm if you’re lucky. And for the record I have not been involved with the machine/tool trade since around 1982 or so. Yikes. So the taper and plug taps look fine enough. But they arrive so generic in wrapping and packaging you get the feeling they sent me the least expensive ones anyways. But hey like you know it’s soft metal. Should be fine. Now to put the camping gear away and find my tap wrench(s). The drill I can grab. The tap wrench , been a while so I may have to do the MAN thing and buy another one only to find the original soon after. Pessimistic SOB I know , but history dictates sometimes. Yeah the races were awesome ! NJMP is Subaru’s home track in south Jersey , and the MotoAmerica series was there. Two wheel action. Watch the Supersport race. You won’t be disappointed. And the MotoGP race too. Incredible fight for the win.

Pesky critters , eh ? Drill and tap ordered through Satan himself. Should arrive while I’m having fun. Back at it Tuesday. GD thanks again for your advice. I don’t like using Satan but looks like my soul will remain with me for now. I bumped up a little in quality for the tap after reading reviews. But did get a plug/bottom set of two like you originally suggested. Amazed that I could not seem to find one locally.

I hear ya Larry but I’m content to keep it a roller for my old buddy who’s coming for it. Haven’t seen the guy in a few years but we’re always good with each other no matter how much time has passed since last bumping into each other. And there’s a young lady I think in the next town over who will likely grab those wheels as long as my friend can work it out either at the yard or if she comes up with some steels. As for the brakes and suspension, yeah I sure did give it all considering, but in the long run enough is enough. For reasons I’d rather not go into I sort of need to finish this up and get back to life without wrenches. Look for my EGR thread to bump up soon. Tomorrow I need to extract my old engine and get them side by side and then the big show - drill and tap in the EGR port/fitting. What I need to do tomorrow is turn my back on that piggie and focus on my car. Let’s see what happens. LOL there’s still a heater unit in there I have mostly undone , and the steering wheel just one bolt at the joint and it’s ready to yank , and wait , I think there’s a seat belt , wait what about the .....
-
Waiting for the scrapper I decided to make the effort. The passenger side was easier than I had thought. Also have the steering column down but not disconnected at the joint yet so I can maneuver the car. One bolt and it’ll be extracted. Pulled the dashboard mostly for experience and assist , so I thought , getting the other components out. It’s a sickness I know. Most of this stuff will sit around but screw it I’m forced to pay for storage so might as well use it. Siphoned the gas , pretty much taken all of value from this piggie.

Engine swap

In the middle of an EGR port drill and tap in another post if you’re curious to that method. A little slow but this week I’ll be getting that done. Pretty much unbolt the old intake and place it up by the windshield area - just suspend it with some wood or ? And then it’s out of the way. You can then lift the engine out , drop in the 95 (less it’s intake of course) , and bolt the intake down to your newer engine. Replace any hoses under the intake and inspect the metal tubes as well for rust which would create pinholes. Common practice. -
Thanks all. Yeah , it’s time I stopped myself and rolled this stinking box out. If I am crazy enough to continue I will check the recall list first and sift through the nice pile of service records they kept. Storage , well you know what George Carlin said about that , right ? Thinned out my vintage parts , now filling it up with would be could be functional parts. Ahhh the American way.

Just about to shove this parts wagon to scrap and had wondered about salvaging the air bags. For one thing I’m going to be putting a new driver in a same era car very soon. And you never know with me behind the whee of my own ‘03. Are they worth the effort ? Given their age is it worth it ? The parts car is a 2000 so 22 years old now. Here’s something to consider @@@ the car was smashed in front but the bags didn’t go off. Damage was mostly hood and grill, bumper too but wasn’t too bad. I even salvaged the driving lights. Old days and older generation cars I would take the steering column complete. Is that something you can still do with these airbags in them ? I had been fooling around with the dashboard and kind of exploring. Removed a bunch of nuts but haven’t really made the full effort. Anything to know if I go after the passenger bag ? Is that even worth it ? Normally I’d say if something like that needs replacing on my car or kid’s car that it’s just time to let the car go. But given several factors I’m just looking to cover bases and have that insurance on the shelf. Theory has been talked about by many. You have the part ready to use and therefore you won’t ever need it.
-
Let me know if you need pictures or parts. I took the entire double unit down and all seals carefully removed as well. There’s a few drains and some T into others’s duct. Haven’t gone to see the exit for the front tubes yet but you were already down that path. Just about to roll this car out for scrap.
-
I won the match. Just about done with the silliness of obsessive dismantling. Took off more crap I won’t need and probably won’t sell. But it’s fun and therapeutic, yeah that’s right. Raised the front as shown and somebody must have been looking out for me because that piggie came out fairly easy. Small victory. My celebratory post.

Hoping you accumulate the number of stories many of us have or had with ours. Sweetie ! Taking me back to my white 86.

that’s the left read drain tube at the outlet. As you can see there was some build up there. Just stopped by this car today for another short stint. Figured I’d snap some shots. I have the perimeter of the ceiling liner all loose and the only thing I need to further investigate would be how this thing is anchored around the glass. I can see that it’s one point in the center in the forward roof , and the back looks like it has four of some sort.
