Carb cleaner,n' all that is going to do it wonders.Clean the old gas out.check all the lines.blow them out or replace what's easy enough.Fuel filter(s),does the '82 have 2 filters? And does it have the third fitting for vapor seperator(?). Check disty for wobble.THe tune up kit will work wonders.Drain oil and heads too, maybe after a treatment if you use one.Get the coolant system flushed, intall a T fitting for flushing the heater core.Remember, you're in this for the long run.Avoid doing things twice or the expensive way. Belts, those on the car have been drying out. Check the ASV reed valves(chewed ends or bent, broken) and the plastic silencer downstream(melting, cracking). Call me after 2PM if you need me.Good luck.

Anyone else familiar with the 1400's?
moosens replied to moosens's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
hi there,I'm Paul and I'm a 70's Subaru owner.......... Seriously,I know the 1400 is not very popular here so far,but if you know someone who knows someone....well,pass it along, please. I'd like to run my dual carb set up on an EA71,but I also have a good revised edition EA63,and if the dual carb fits up then that'll have to be. I think it'd be great to keep it 1400 if possible. -
Meet the Coupe Get Together.UPDATED!

Connie's place is almost as easy to get to as my place was. Right off US Rt 84,exit 4 for those who want a reference for checking a map. -
Looking for any word on them. This is the dual carb'd version with 10:1 compression and a whopping 93 HP. Naturally I'd be interested in getting one,but not right now. Mostly I'd like to get some facts from owners or mechanics who've worked on them. Thanks for any help.

Please try to keep this thread dedicated to the two US 1400's.Thank you. My understanding is the the first 1400 was a punched out 1300.It had cylinder sleeves "wet",or inserted, not just bored into the block, and the removal of the extra material caused the 1400 of '72-74 to allow the sleeves to rattle loose and eventually chew up headgaskets and if neglected, wasted heads. This is the four port exhaust EA63. Correct my dates if wrong please.I believe the revised 1400 was issued in late '74 and definitely was in production vehicles for 1975.I tend to relate the first year of 4WD (1975) with the necessity of the revised EA63,but from my understanding the revised edition was already in some '74's.(the revised edition is two port exhaust, like all the engines that followed through the EA82) Questions: Do the early 1400 heads work over the revised block? Is the crossmember the same as a EA71 (1600)? Is the intake manifold,or even the intake ports on the heads the same as an EA71,early edition? I'm really hoping I have a new house soon so I can answer some of my own questions.Right now I have no place to play EA engine doctor. Thanks for any help.Again, let's please try to keep this to the 1400's.I'm not interested in getting into "what I could put in there,etc.etc....". Thanks, Paul

The sound,as heard over the phone was inspiring to say the least. Both the noise at revs and the silly noise at idle made me want to do nasty things.Like I said, inspiring. -
The Next of Many Dumb EA81 Questions

I'll try to contact Rory in Danbury. He owned the yellow lifted EA81 wagon that's still around the east coast. -

Did you match up the glass? That's great if it's the same.Extra case too. You're going to have a great car really soon, fear not.Get that body taken care of now. Please don't throw too much to the mechanic,we'll be there to help you. Remember one thing, please.I haven't paid for a mechanic since around 1995. -
She is Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
moosens replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yup,pretty much what she said. The '84 is much better now.I was in 4WD around 12:30 AM Saturday/Sunday trying to back my coupe into a good spot.I worked the tranny a lot that 10 minutes or so.It was resisting reverse, but once I got it back into 2WD all was wonderful again.Tranny acts great once again.Knock on wood. Going up into the mountains was probably the toughest.Connies coupe would tow much better down here in the "flatlands". My '73 is so light,it barely feels like there's a car there after towing the '82 -

3 Days Till GLF!!!!!!!!!!!!
moosens replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Connie or Tom will be driving.I'm catching up on some sleep on the way up......sorry to break the news to you Connie. You'll get an EA81 practice run for about 6++ hours. Should be fun.Let's hope for no mechanicals,or DNF's in any way. -
Sorry, something about this just ain't right to me.I'll have to think this over but right now I'd say it's much too much of a hassle with becoming a non-profit to bother with.I hate to shoot down an idea,so let me re-read and think about it some more.I'm going off of instinct right now. It'd work if we all lived near each other.I've thought about starting a Vintage Japanese Club here in CT since the Hispanic population holds a whole mess of wicked cool Toyotas,Datsuns, and a few Mazdas, etc. But I'd be one of a handfull of non Spanish speaking whiteboys in a sea of latinos.Don't go taking that the wrong way now,you hear?I grew up in Bridgeport,CT,not Bumluck Idaho. SOA back us up? I'm not so sure about that.

Hahahaha, that freakin' guido!!! If it's the same one, which I'll bet it is,then it's actually a decent car.Opinion based on it'ss condition almost 2 years ago when I looked at it. -
Only thing that bothers me is that he went out of his way to get that whole warehouse of stock,or some major portion of it,and then vanished without really cashing in while the market was probably at peak for that old stock.Just didn't make sense.Luckily,I never sent him anything. It really helped that he was "building a pile"for me.I don't know if I should believe that or not, now. :-\

Hey!!!! call me please.I know you probably couldn't get away to help me yesterday but it would have been good to call me,even if to say "I just can't make it".I wanted you to talk to Charlie, who came down at 10PM and stayed untill around 1AM.....we'll talk soon. No,I haven't asked my wife about the trip yet.

I'll have to write more when my brain activity increases but long story short, these two people were complete life savers ALL WEEKEND for me.Last night they stayed with me untill around 1:30 AM,at least!!!! I'm still not out of the workshop but it's to a point where I should be able to tackle it all today with my friend, and lots of dump runs.Too bad the town I can dump in for free is 15 miles away...but anyhow.... Connie and her boyfriend Tom are incredibly nice people,to say the least. My own brothers dogged me on help.It was a complete blessing to have Connie and Tom there with me. Thanks also to Scott(wagon78),Andrew(wagonsOnly),and the others who helped this and last weekend-Matt and Michele,etc....
